It's not that difficult to compile it from source if you want a newer version. Or you know... you could just use another distro.

Debian stable is the kind of shit you install on your mum's computer so that you can avoid a trip to your parents place every time an upstream dev redesigns their UI.

Debian testing or sid is what you should be using on your own business. Testing is probably more stable than any other distro already.

You can just install the kernel and de/wm from backports if that's what you want.
If you are unable to do basic administration you should not be using debian. Goodbye.

I used to try all kinds of new distros constantly. I've found that Debian is the only one that truly just works. Every other one has given me some kind of problem or done something in a way that I didn't like and they always felt like there was some kind of compromise. Debian seems to be the perfect balance of stability and usability. The install process is even smoother than Windows.
>>
>>60018022
I think its interesting and funny how people seem to like the stability of windows LTSB and think it's 10y life is a good feature, but people dont seem to apply the same logic to RHEL and it's derivatives and Debian stable.
>>
>>60020228
>>60020410
4.10.1 isn't bleeding edge, it's the current stable release, even Ubuntu ships with it
>>
>>60020459
The thing that gets me is that Ubuntu still at least tries to be a touch up-to-date, right...but I don't want bloat. I don't want to have to add a new repo just because fish is apparently not secure enough. I guess I'd just like Openbox with Ubuntu's fresh package system instead of Debian's slow update cycle. Makes me wonder if Arch isn't just a meme.
>>
>>60020491
ech, I don't mind it but its a bit dumb to push every dot release out instantly on Fedora. Also everyone bitching about debian didnt read that they freeze packages for 2 years of testing then release them.
>>
>>60020501
arch with base-devel lts is fine. none of my arch installs have spontaneously combusted like the memes say, and the AUR is bretty gud.

>>

same here. I just switched to Manjaro/OpenRC and am trying to figure out how to install grsec, Zen, or libre-grsec kernels. installing samba to access my NAS shares was a pain because installing samba does not install 'gvfs-smb', which is necessary. I did not know this. Manjaro with systemd works out of the box.

If your hardware is supported and you are getting security updates why do you need the latest version for all software?

It's not like you can't get newer software on Debian Stable if you need the new features, either via backports, compiling (and patching, and contributing to development) yourself or pre-compiled binaries directly from upstream (e.g. appimage).

>From an administrator's point of view, which distribution requires more attention?
>One of the main reasons why many people choose Debian over other Linux distributions is that it requires very little administration.
>People want a system that just works. In general one can say that stable requires very little maintenance, while testing and unstable require constant maintenance from the administrator.
>If you are running stable, all you need to worry about is keeping track of security updates.
>If you are running either testing or unstable it is a good idea to be aware of the new bugs discovered in the installed packages, new bugfixes/features introduced etc.

It's not like Debian Stable is old, 2 years between stable releases is a perfectly sane development cycle.

if it ain't broken don't fix it.

i still use windows xp whenever I'm desperate to run a highly obscure piece of software that somehow doesn't have a non-windows alternative.
Newer versions do not offer a single fucking advantage over XP.
And they consume 6 times resources more for god knows what reason.

idk why they don't call it linux-lts. probably just debian being debian with the package names again.
