>no calling "Insider" a good update
Let's see. My machine boots from hibernation to completely resuming the work in less than 20 seconds, including the time required to log in via fingerprint scan. Booting from the regular shut-down is even faster.
WSL has more goodness implemented and currently allows me to participate in the development of our current Ruby on Rails project with zero changes to the working copy despite other team members using Macs. Not to mention, I had way less problems setting the environment up and I still get a much faster-performing machine.
And despite being "unstable" it's yet to break on me - I'm using it for over 2 months atm.

I see zero reasons not to call Insider a good update.

It's a function my laptop has. Gotta use the function.

When it doesn't stutter, it's much faster than typing in the password. Gotta have a password, as I use it as both my personal and working PC.

Honestly I think it's because Bill Gates stepped down. Think about it: the last thing he had anything to do with was Vista. 7 was more or less Vista 2 Electric Boogaloo. Everything since 7 has been fucked in some way or another.

And on that topic, while I'm not his biggest fan, I think we all can see that Apple has gone downhill since Steve Jobs died. Face it: we need visionaries.
>>
>>60015807
>Face it: we need visionaries.
It's not even that. What we need, is to abandon this nonsense of "converging" desktop and mobile operating systems. It's fucking retarded. Mobile devices are an entirely different experience due to the nature of the hardware involved. They lack processing power as well. We get a half-assed product as a result. The user gains nothing, the developers win by covering two products at the same time. It's lazy, and disgusting. Also, don't even get me started on this bullshit of collecting user data under the guise of "improving the user experience".

In the heyday of PC's, the tech world wasn't flooded with mongoloids. People were responsible and practical. These days, we have people throwing money at doing insecure things on insecure as fuck devices, that have zero business being attached to the internet. Somehow this is being memed as progress, though. I've lost all hope for humanity.
>>
>>60014734
The OS itself is great. For real, Windows 10 is the Windows it should've been. BUT: the telemetry. Mircosoft went fucking nuts with telemetry.

Why does Microsoft think Win 10 would be more secure when earlier versions of Windows would run as secure as 10 when they HADN'T telemetry?
>>
>>60018970
>Windows would run as secure as 10
I ain't saying telemetry has anything to do with it, as I have no idea even if it does, but previous versions of Windows were full of critical vulnerabilities and were nowhere as safe as Win10. I guess, Win7 with all of the updates might be as safe as 10, but prior to that, they were vulnerable.
Like, nowadays almost the only way to get your PC infected is to launch a virus yourself and give it permissions to run. If an actual vulnerability is found, it's made known and patched away almost immediately.
On 98. XP and early 7, you could've easily gotten your PC infected by plugging in a USB, reading a CD, opening a web page or fucking connecting to a local network. For current Win10 you don't even need a dedicated antivirus. And the integrated firewall actually works.

Its not about your security, its about Microsoft's financial security.
The writing is on the wall that Microsoft's old business model of selling Windows and Office to OEMs isn't going to work much longer.
Free operating systems are too capable and there aren't really any killer features now that Microsoft could introduce that would make it worth it to OEMs to pay a premium.
Microsoft needs to make money off of Windows at $0, and that means they need telemetry, advertising, and people buying their software from the Windows Store.

OSX isn't free either, you just don't pay for it since it's subsidized by the hardware sales plus that's all you're gonna use it on anyway.

>>
>>60015807
I remember if you go back and watch Steve Jobs stuff he is really passionate about the product. If you look at him explaining the iPad and iPhone in reveal you can see he cares a lot about it. He really thinks this is a good thing. He had an idea of how we would use our products. Like the iPad could sit in the living room and the family could pick it up and do stuff on it.

When I see Tim Cook reveal his Apple Watch it's just like. Look we have another product. See, we're still innovative guys! Steve Jobs hated charging shit apparantly so I doubt he would remove the headphone jack for wireless or release the Apple Watch at all. There's no sense of how it fits into our lives.

The iPhone 8 reveal spent so much time just on the black color. They advertise it like a fashion product now. I never remember that shit with Jobs either, but maybe I'm just not remembering..
>>
>>60024113
>Such as?
The business model of selling operating system software is not going to survive the advent of mainstream sub $100 computers, and there's no really compelling reason why the majority of users need to spend more.

>Android? Puh-lease!
>Linux?
Deny it all you want, Android/Linux is now on the majority of computing devices in the world and desktop and mobile Linux based operating systems continue to move closer together. ChromeOS running Android applications on laptop hardware thanks in part to Wayland and Mesa is a glimpse of the future, as is the proliferation of cheap single board ARM computers.

Unless Microsoft manages to figure out how to make money off of a $0 version of Windows without losing their user base and OEMs in the process their power over OEMs and as an extension over the average desktop user will not survive.
>>
>>60025230
Microsoft hasn't made money on windows for a long time. They make a shitload of money for governments and some large companies (such as macy's and adobe).
Overall, their current strategy is cloud-first, ai-first as a business (which really means, put everything in the cloud and hope people are dumb enough to fall for it and slap a program with the word AI in the title even though it's literally just a bunch of regex because AI is too haaaaard). As such, they believe that mobile as an end-user platform is a significantly higher-priority target than other devices.

All I have is an answer to the question you asked.
>>
Sigh, where to begin?
1. The ugly "let's have both touch & regular traditional desktops" deal.
2. Redesigned UI (kinda goes along with 1.) so that it takes 3- 5 more steps to do certain things than it did in Win 7. Some things get buried so deep or moved from where they were in Win 7 that it's fucking easier to use the damn search box in order to find them. Which is a shame btw.
3. The whole redone web enabled search assistant aka Cortiana. Do you really want nearly every thing you do broadcast over the net. If you use the new assistant kiss your privacy goodbye.
4. Windows Store (Shit) Again the whole let's combine both phone/touch and traditional desktop deal this time with ads thrown in for good measure.
5. Start menu - yeah so they listened and brought it back after they killed it in 8/8.1 but they also kept it so that it brings up fucking spam (news/ads,etc) everytime you launch it. You can disable the spam but its something that never should have been put in place to start with.
6. More Flash, "oh geez look at the pretty desktop thing" Do you really need a fashy desktop to read e-mail or surf the net? I highly doubt it.

7. More bloat, the install setup actually compresses the windows files to save disk space (a first for windows btw) So that right there should tell you that the designers had little or no clue as to how to what they were doing if they had to resort to compression in order to conserve drive space. (Yeah drives are cheap but still)

8. Lets see, what does Ten have over 7 again, other than more "Flash" and oh yes DX 12? Nothing, unless you want to count storage spaces (which is only good thing about Ten)

9. But new processors won't work on win 7. wrong they'll work just MS won't support them, Win 7 will be supported till 2020. Even after that date Anitvirus/internet Browers will still be compatible with win 7. Look at XP, Antivirus and Browsers still work fine on it and xp's been "dead" since 2014.
>>
>>60025488
Glad for you, anon. My 7 never managed to boot even half as fast. And I have never seen it do so even after a clean install.
Well, that's unless you aren't counting the time it takes for BIOS to load.
>>
Nothing, everything works except ICC profiles.
>>
>>60026347
>More Flash
7 definitely has more "flash" with all the glass shit.

pretty much all of it. firing their qa department, dumping more spaghetti code onto the already bloated OS, the UI, the telemetry, the updates.

I mean wtf is pic related?

This is a clean install of windows 10 from like 3 days ago. Why is all this trash on my start menu? Why is everything
padding: 15px !important
? Why does this context sub-menu exist when it takes up just as much space as its parent? Who thought any of this was a good idea?

LTSB is slightly less shit in that:
- Cortana is removed
- App Store is removed
- no shit like Candy Crush or Minecraft installing without your permission
- no ads
- classic calculator, instead of metro
>>
>>60026823
yea this is ultimately what i'll end up doing. LTSB for games and linux for everything else.

I should note, that picture is the """Professional""" version of windows. Professional my ass.

>1. The ugly "let's have both touch & regular traditional desktops" deal.
Which you have to enable manually to see.
>2. Redesigned UI (kinda goes along with 1.) so that it takes 3- 5 more steps to do certain things than it did in Win 7
It doesn't take more steps. Not to mention, Win7 was the actual Windows to implement extra steps on its options.
>use the damn search box
A lot of people started doing that all the way back on Win7, because if you know what you're doing - it's much faster.
>3. The whole redone web enabled search assistant aka Cortiana
Which has to be enabled manually
>every thing you do broadcast over the net
Give me an actual source for this meme
>so that it brings up fucking spam
It only has suggestions and the store tile in it. Two clicks to remove forever.
>oh geez look at the pretty desktop thing
You had never used Win10, hadn't you?
>More bloat
Another buzzword. Care to specify "the bloat" and especially how's there "more" of it?
>8. Lets see, what does Ten have over 7 again
It's better optimized, can make use of Quick Boot in modern UEFI, has much better universal driver support, has better tools out of the box, has great backward compatibility, has a marginally faster search.
Not to mention it has access to WSL which is fucking amazing.
>>
>>60026867
Windows 7 still works fine.
>>
>>60014734
Windows 10 is perfectly fine as long as you're on LTSB.
>>
>>60014734
Holy shit, I installed that thing with a clean iso for my friend yesterday and it's crashing like hell, and his PC is very capable of running it.

How can I activate the Pro version? I'm still running the "limited" Pro (it doesn't allow cosmetic changes) since I don't have a product key.
>>
>>60026910
this is another strong possibility assuming I can still find a way to get updates for it despite microsoft's best efforts.

I really don't want to give m$ the satisfaction of me switching to 10 considering all the bullshit they're pulling.

this is the problem for me. I shouldn't have to do any of this bullshit in the pro version.
>>

Just disable Windows Defender and it should work just fine.
Make sure to use AutoKMS so you don't have to keep renewing it manually.

Right-click > Unpin is "excessively difficult"?
>remove all the random unnecessary bullshit included in Win10
Depends on what are you consider to be "unnecessary". Removing pre-installed apps is as easy as it gets. Removing apps that Windows considers to be mandatory - Store, for example - will require you to use PowerShell.
I see no reason to explicitly cut the functionality of the OS just to save ~50MB.

I'm installing bloat to monitor telemetry. Winaero gets uninstalled as soon as I'm done, working on scripts to replace it still. The only other "bloat" is classic shell, which is needed if you want to search for .exe files in the start menu and fully disable cortana.

Win10 calc doesn't even open after my de-bloat scripts run. (nor do any metro style apps). It is otherwise functionally identical to the win 7 calculator.

You are an autist if you're using Fiddler to monitor telemetry. I really hope you are using it for work.

Anon, you have a settings master folder on that screenshot named precisely "GodMode". All of these are random shit you've found while browsing The Internet and you have no idea what a half of these do and how 100% of these work.
>Win10 calc doesn't even open
I won't be surprised if you've managed to fuck up UWP host in your OS.
>>
>>60027394
I don't run/install everything in this folder, it's just all the shit I've compiled along the way. I install Glasswire to monitor network traffic differences between win 7 and win 10 (trying to get 10 to 7 baselines). Classic shell and winaero for the reasons I already mentioned. Then my custom scripts in the scripts folder, which mostly deal with deleting telemetry services and tasks, killing cortana, removing all the UWP bloat, the update full screen overlay, and applying my other default settings.

>I won't be surprised if you've managed to fuck up UWP host in your OS.
The UWP breakage is due to my UAC settings, which are not compatible with UWP. This isn't a problem because I never intend to open a UWP app anyway.

Oh well, more power to you, anon. I hope you'll achieve whatever result you're trying to achieve without breaking the OS down to the level which will make you question why you are using it in the first place.
I do think you should get a better hobby for your excessive free time, though.
>The UWP breakage is due to my UAC settings, which are not compatible with UWP.
That makes no sense, as the only way I can see UWP conflicting with UAC settings would be when you're trying to give UWP access to everything which it shouldn't have and which you shouldn't try to give. It sandboxes everything - how can it be affected by UAC settings?
>>

>without breaking the OS down to the level which will make you question why you are using it in the first place.
I'm way past this point anon

yes, I'm using the windows 7 style "UAC off", which runs everything with elevated privileges and is the reason UWP is broken.
>>
>>60028029

The settings were changed because they want more users to configure their pc's, pre windows 10 versions somehow were not that friendly. Honestly I can't understand how but people literally didn't understand the control panel options.

July 2015 - Horrible launch state, gayming benchmarks show worse performance than Windows 7, windows update insists on installing all your drivers for you even if they break your system. Unflexible update system. Minor app incompatibility.

April 2017 - It's decent now.

This is what happens when you hire pajeet.

Americans are generally visionaries; we have imagination.

When I teach engineering classes at a fairly rich high school full of indians and Asians, and let me tell you...Indians and Asian are definitely hard workers, but they only work to please. They don't have the skill set to imagine, or push boundaries. These students only care about trophies and certificates...Anything that makes them look good on paper but haver zero depth.

Americans on the other hand, push boundaries and take risks to push the envelope and try something new. More however are losing this due to standardized testing.

WSL should've caused a /thread from the start. It's the reason I ditched macOS and moved back to windows. I'm a game dev so Linux is kind of out.
