Any cpu is fine. Newer gpus (polaris) are fantastic and never better. Mid-old cards might give you trouble. Old cards are fine.
i've had less trouble with amd's gpus than with nvidia's

Not OP, new to linux, I wanted to go for Vega when it comes out but I've checked AMD drivers site and there was no support for newer cards on debian. Does that mean they will add support? Or maybe it will work fine without it being mentioned in there?
thx for the answers, would like to get a desktop sime time in the future, have been on laptops for the last 10 years,
will probably wait till Vega comes out, and check the reviews and pricing out ...

The mesa drivers are bad (but they're the best you can get). They run simple games like TF2, Gmod, L4d2, etc perfectly, but don't even think about Triple A gaming.

to add on to this. There's also the AMDGPU-PRO drivers, but they aren't that much different from mesa.
Go with Nvidia if you wanna game on Linux. The drivers are literally only 7% worse than their windows counterparts.
