Post your setups /g/.

My next PC is going to be a small unit. I've long-since stopped needing any more power, and the system that currently fills a massive tower could now probably fit in something 1/4 the size and use 1/4 the power.

It's really amazing isn't it?

Compare what you can fit in a literal shoebox today versus the 40 pound towers you had to haul to LANs 10 even just 10 years ago.
>>
I've got a Cooler Master Elite 110 case, filled it with: MSI z97i AC, i5-4670K and ASUS-GTX970-DCMOC

Works pretty well, although I use my laptop way more often, since it's comfier to shitpost on the couch

Eventually when I have a job, and have some money I want to make a SFF build. They're quite comfy and nice.

I have a mini-ITX Ivy bridge machine right now. My next SFF build will probably have a super small mini-ITX case paired with an external thunderbolt GPU enclosure. That way I can just power down the GPU when I'm using the computer as a server (90% of the time) and not a gayming or htpc rig

there's a list of aftermarket cooler recommendations on the website though last time i looked it was basically all low-power stuff and the cryorig c7 which can apparently handle the ~90w cpus like my 6700k

What's the smallest case that can hold a 3.5" HDD?

I don't need a video card or tall CPU cooler. I just need room for one 3.5" HDD. (I don't even need a 2.5" slot because I'll boot from a M.2.)

no, you're not. low-profile aftermarket coolers exist. Noctua L9 is a popular choice.

Any small case can fit air cooler like noctua d15 ?

Why not get Cougar QBX instead of dancase?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov8ICYqDe2I
Much cheaper and instead of trying to be so small almost unpractical it can fit a 120mm rad or a 240mm rad with a SFX psu. Planned getting one for my Ryzen build but ITX mobos were N/A.

if you want an air cooler that big, maybe one of the cases with the motherboard on the bottom might work?

but then why bother with itx when those things are so huge?

noctua u9 seemed to be a popular choice in the ncase m1, it's what i used after seeing a lot of other builds with it (but the m1 can fit a 240mm rad or two)

>>60002363
at that size i'd take all the vents i could get

i assume it's there so heat off the back of the motherboard and graphics card has somewhere to go

It's not THAT much bigger than a 202. ~5"x18"x"15 vs ~3.5"x15"x13". But good luck comfortably fitting an aio in a 202.

>Noctua L9 is a popular choice.

This is the reason why I won't go smaller than an Ncase. I stuck a NF-A9x14 in my Ncase as an exhaust fan just for supplementary cooling and it's by far the loudest fan I have in my case. I had to add two low noise adapters to get it as quiet as the NF-A15. Having it as the only source of cooling I just cannot see as being quiet enough.
>>
>>60004034
i saw bitwit do the same on youtube, that's why i said comfortably as this route requires some cutting of the case.
>>
>>60004078
That's a stupid reason to avoid doing it. It took me 5 minutes to go out and buy a $3 hacksaw, then another 5 minutes to cut the case.

You can also get a detachable AIO to avoid doing that if you're really autistic, those exist now.
>>
Has anyone tried to use one of those laptop powerbricks as their PSU to minimize the footprint of the PC's chasis itself?

I'm wondering if there's a termination adapter for these external powerbricks that fits inside the PC chasis and functions like a modular PSU's connector plate.
>>

allows for a bit of passive cooling via convection. you don't want any pockets of warm air in such a small case. the v2 will also allow for an additional small case fan mounted in the bottom.
>>
>>60004107
i didn't say avoid doing it or that it's a bad idea. i just said it required cutting. i'm not attacking the idea, quit defending it.

It's actually quite frustrating finding GPUs that fit, because it has a length (10in) AND height requirement. All the high end cards for mini-ITX systems cheat the height to avoid length or vice versa.

The Sentry is the same layout as the Steam Machine that Valve prototyped several years ago. The Silverstone RVZ02 and Fractal Node 202 are the slightly larger, commercialized cases based on the same layout. The Sentry isn't especially "different."

mATX is small enough, more flexible, and you dont get kiked with SFX PSUs

Fuck, I saw a photo of a tiny GPU here maybe yesterday or the day before which I believe isn't out yet. Of course my stupid fucking anus didn't save the image. Are there any Can't remember how the posts were worded either so I can't find it on the archive. Any idea which one I might be thinking of? Or are there too many which could be it?
>>
>>60008225
>Smallest I'll go is matx I think.
reee I wish there were more small matx cases in the style of the m1

most matx options are just regular towers with a couple inches shaved off their height, leaving them long as fuck and even more awkward looking (and no real reason to bother with over an atx mid tower)

>>60008410
yeah, i was thinking about it to replace my dying htpc or possibly going all-sff for my home office - throw my gaymen setup in there then my m1 can be built into a baby dev workstation with a ryzen 1700 or something
>>
>>60009429
There are zotac and gigabyte mini gpus for the 1070 and 1060 i believe.
>>
>>60009589
Must have been one of those then. Thanks a bunch man.
>>
my friend built one to take to lan parties and they're such fucking noise makers that it's annoying to play with him around now

cool guy though
>>
Does anyone know if their's any widely available cases smaller then the Node 202 that accepts atleast a mini itx card. Want to go smaller than the Node 202.

Everything else seems to be in batches and has wait times to buy it.

I built an mITX system when they were still a new thing. None of the pictures I took gave a proper sense of scale, unfortunately. The whole system is barely 10"x7"x8"

Was a cute novelty but the GPU fan drove me fucking insane with how loud it got.

And a picture of it on a desk.
Headphones are HD280s if that gives a sense of scale I guess.

Not as compact as the more modern cases because it didnt make any use of PCIe risers/extension cables I guess.
>>
>>60000280
For me it's the MacBook, the best compact computer
>>
>>60010388
>>60009651
Is GPU fan loudness not something you can avoid? Or are there some semi-decent GPUs with quieter fans around?

>>60010417
Here's your reply but I was thinking about getting one of those Mac Minis back a few years ago. Don't really care enough to get one though.
>>
>>60010434
Modern GPUs should help the loudness thing a lot with their fanless idle modes and greater efficiency in general.
>>
What do you lads use SFF for? Movies, light gaming, shitposting?
>>
>>60004597
anyone?
>>
>>60003949
Depends. For any good SFX case, it's not that hard to stuff everything in there and get it working. It is very difficult to do it well though.

Generally, if you aren't willing to get custom cables and re-crimp your cables to the perfect length, your SFF build will always be subpar.

>>60000280
I have a first run NCase.

Not sure if it's the case or just me, but ever since I got into SFF, I'm way more concerned about actually using my computer rather than constantly working on my computer, if you know what I mean.

>>60004929
I built a hackintosh for my parents with one of these cases. Holy shit is it way sturdier than I thought. Shit's the thickest aluminum case I've ever seen. It's a fucking tank.

Just make sure you tighten the barrel connector really well at the back, and use some loctite if you have it.

I actually really like that case, I just like my discrete video cards too much to use it myself. :\
>>
>>60010359
Yeah, you can buy the motherboards and the rest of the parts by themselves to make your own NUC.
>>
>>60001992
I picked one up cheap second hand from and its great

i started building mine for work as a replacement for my matx 3930k system

but i don't like the 6700k all that much so it's waiting to become my gaymen rig with a gtx1080 and i'll just build a ryzen 1800x or some xeon E5 beast for work that doesn't need to care about >muh fps. got my eye on a capture card too so i can run gaymen through a window on my main desktop or use a console instead if i want to play a console exclusive game

my sff shit is an ncase m1 with a noctua u9s cooler so it can handle extended gaming sessions with no worries about temps
>>
>>60004597
looks like a more accommodating elite 130, if that's all you can get then why not.
>>
>>60010241
Ehh, have a GTX 1070 and a 6700k, I don't think a pico PSU would cover it
>>
>>60002351
Fractal Define Nano S
Easily the most spacious ITX case that doesn't actually take up lots of space.
>>
Thought my midtower phantom 410 was too big. Bought it in 2012 where gamer aesthetics were on most good cases.

In early 2016 I sold my 3770k, GTX 970, 16GB RAM PC for $980.

For $1,200 I bought a Node 202, 600W Corsair SFX PSU, GTX 1070, 32GB DDR4, 6770k, and z170 itx board.

I think my transition to SFF went well. The only downside is the fan noise, which is why I want to maybe change to a cube it case.
>>
>>60010408
SG05 is still one of the smallest cases now.
>>
>>60011382
This is what I run. It's not really SFF though (see >>60005407), it can fit a full size water cooler so you can overclock like a motherfucker.

>tfw didn't do much research when I switched to ITX, and didn't realize the Nano S wasn't actually that small since it was designed for water cooling
It looks so empty but also the cable management is on point. If I come across $150 burning a hole in my pocket somehow, I'll install a hybrid cooler on my GPU.
>>
>>60011335
1070 mini will fit just fine in that case with hdplex 400. If you have a fullsize card then the smallest you can go is node 202 or dancase.
>>
My problem with sff is I need it to hold a fuckton of drives.

I currently have 4 and is growing slowly.
>>
>>60011891
Are they 2.5" or 3.5" drives? I'm >>60011845 , and I have room for one m.2 SSDs, two 2.5" drives behind the motherboard, one 2.5" or 3.5" drive on the back side next to the motherboard, and one 2.5" or 3.5" on the bottom in front of the power supply. Unfortunately there's not really an option for a drive cage even though there's room for it. But yeah, ITX isn't a good idea if you need a lot of drives.

>>
>>60011976
I think the ITX case with the most 3.5" drive support is the Core 500, it can fit 3 3.5" drives, 3 2.5" drives, and it has a 5.25" drive bay. Maybe you could get by with that if you consolidated a few drives into less, bigger drives?
>>
>>60012037
Sounds like a plan. Since I think we have 10tb now.

This dude makes some neat cases. That S4-mini is quite small.
>>
>>60003375
Is this the same case in the op?
>>
>>60012564
A power brick is moving the space elsewhere. It depends on what you're trying to do. If you're trying to squeeze a case into narrow spaces on a desk or TV a power brick makes sense. Otherwise a power brick has less power (not enough to power a GTX 1080TI for instance) and less reliability and lifetime due to passive cooling only.
>>
>>60012359
Silverstone SG10
>>
>>60004742
Kinda depends on you storage needs/if you have plans to expand down the road.
>>
I wish there was a case like the SG13, only it was designed to be stood up vertically. Also, maybe make it SFX psu only, and move the PSU to the empty space between the motherboard and the front of the case (on the SG13) so that there is more drive and/or fan mounting options where the PSU currently is on it.
>>
Thanks to this thread I backed the ghost s1 on kickstarter. I dont know if it will get enough since its short as fuck right now but it seems to have plenty of time left. Kind of pissed I missed the cheaper price for earlier backers.

>>
I currently have an RVZ01 slim tower... i'm actually thinking of going up a size to mATX to the inWin 301, the omission of a 5" bay means they can slim the case down to 188mm (or 7.4")

Unless i can get some practical advice on making the RVZ01 quieter, because i do like the case, my only major complaint is the stock 10mm fans are noisy and i'm really not sure if i can fit 20mm ones in.

core i5 6600k
asus gtx1080 turbo
silverstone SG13 which i fuckin love
AIO Corsair H60 cooler for the cpu
8gb ram
few ssd

cpu temp around 28 to 30 on idle

very happy with my setup. but costs me around 2000$

maybe in future gonna build a smaller ones with much less budget. since amd got out ryzen

There's not much room for CPU overclocking because of the heatsink height limitation.
>>
>>60013293
CPU overclocking is a meme anyway.

>>60013315
It's a meme now that i7-7700K are 4.5Ghz turboboost and pre-overclocked, and Ryzen can't overclock by much.
>>
>>60013325
it always added rather little in performance for a rather high cost.
