There was an interesting article about this the other day which talked about why Google was killing off this benchmark.

Apparently, instead of making the browsers actually "fast", they have just been optimizing them for these benchmarks, and in some cases, the browsers run worse for the end user as a result.

Take all of this with a grain of salt. Someone pointed out that this was only made publicly known after google "lost" on that same benchmark. But I don't find it hard to believe, as manufacturers and developers have been finding a way to win synthetic benchmarks since they were introduced.
