/pcbg/: Post your component list; rate other anons'; ask questions in general.

State the PURPOSE of your PC & BUDGET. State COUNTRY if not USA.
List GAMES/SOFTWARE you use often. List resolution & hz if gaming.
Seeking build improvements? Clarify goal: lower price or improved specs?
ctrl+f to see if your question was answered already

>Assemble your parts list with price comparisons & compatibility filter.
https://pcpartpicker.com

>Information on how to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

Currently worthwhile CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>i3 are only worthwhile for dwarf fortress and single-purpose emulator boxes
>i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to Ryzen 7
>No R5 1400 unless discounted
>i7-6700k is good but pricey. If over budget: consider locked 7700; not chasing 4.8Ghz+ capable when you weren't gonna overclock, or get R5
>Cheap Z270 board is still good for faster memory in games w/ locked 7700, but aren't for overclocking (VRMs suck)
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use

Currently worthwhile GFX cards:
>RX470-RX580, 1070, 1080, 1080TI
>1060 is worth considering over a 580 if same/cheaper in your country, and/or you just play games it's better on for the price. 1050Ti is for mITX builds
>RX470/570 is usually all you need for 1080p@60hz.
>Nvidia GPU + Ryzen has issues in many games atm
>Budget builds: consider integrated graphics over a card weaker than RX470, unless price/performance is better (discounted/used)
>May for Vega

General:
>No brand/model loyalty. Parametric filters on pcpartpicker can help
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Save money w/ mATX case/mobo, and if patient by purchasing your parts individually in flash sales

Anyone think the Sliverstone ST45SF-G PSU can power a GTX 1080? My mini build needs an updgrade.
>>
Just found this while watching reviews etc.: https://youtu.be/aZjOx3iimr8
Do you think this guy is right? I'm thinking of getting either X370 + 1600X or B350 + 1600 and OC it to 3.8GHz for 24/7 stable usage.
1600 vs 1600X is like 40€ difference here, for mobo it's Asus X370 vs whatever B350 is like 45€ plus 40€ for cooler. So it's about 120€ difference between those two setups.

>>59983838
>only 3 8pins
Why bother?

>>59983885
Is there a wattage monitor on it?
If you undervolt and watch it, you'll be fine. Worse that happens is that power cuts out if you overload the PSU.

>>59983888
Yes, it seems that pretty much all the 1600s overlock to 4GHz at 1.4v fine. It's the best value. You might get 4.1-4.2 with a 1600X. The performance/$ of the 1600 is better and plus it comes with a cooler that you can probably get 3.7-3.8 on.
That's basically common knowledge stuff at this point.
>>
What are some average operating temps for a Ryzen 1600?

Mine's hovering around 40C just downloading some Steam stuff and browsing the web. Was getting up to about 49C in Overwatch the other night. Am I good? This is my first time using real shit in a computer so I'm still fuzzy on how it all works.

R7 1700 with a GTX 1060 overclocked to 2000MHz+.
If you're too pussy to overclock, get a GTX 1070.

No, Prime95 is not good for stress tests. Run 10 varied things simultaneously.

AMD is really getting it's shit together. Their WATTMAN over-clocking tool completely BTFO of anything that Nvidia offers.

Can anyone even name a good overclocking tool for nvidia cards? (you can't because there isn't one)
>>
>>59984895
because you don't need to overclock it, nvidia is faster than any AMD card out of the box

ohh burn
>>
>>59984666
Looks like a fairly ideal build, unless you can find a good 8GB RX480 on sale for around the same price.
Though I'd get the pro4 mATX board. Isn't it only $7 more?

>>59984895
The thing that bothers me about Nvidia's tools is that no one even realizes it has a framerate limiter in there that works way better than Vsync in games.
Enabling Vsync in games themselves is usually broken as fuck. It usually increases input latency, and usually locks it to 60fps instead of your monitor's refresh rate.
Nvidia's an AMD's framerate limiter both actually reduce latency.

But AMD's, besides having a high and low setting for it, puts it right there in Wattman so you can't miss it. Most people don't know the tool exists for Nvidia, when it's an extremely useful thing.
>>
>>59984913
Typical Nvidiot. Did you sign over your social security number to Nvidia so you can use their gayforce experience?

VEGA will BTFO of the 1080ti while being cheaper.

jesus fucking christ.
It seems like the RX570 prices are way less retarded in Aus. You can get one for just 20% more than the US cost. But your 1070s are 80% more expensive. That price/performance makes no sense. Paying 2x for a card that's not nearly 2x more performant.
Maybe drop memory to 2800-3000 if prices are more sane there, too?

>included preliminary support for AMD Zen 12-core and 16-core HEDT CPUs.
From AIDA64 change-logs, that were hence removed. Listed as X399.
It looks like AMD's X399 may show up right after Intel simply announces the date for X299. Early August or so.
AMD has been trying to keep it a secret despite announcing most else 6+ months ahead.

Expectation is quad channel, 64 PCIe lanes, and the same 3.6/4.1Ghz clocks on 12 and 16 cores.
There may also be an 8 core 1850X(tentative) that has quad channel memory support and more PCIe lanes, 2 cores per CCX (and thus double the cache per core), but is otherwise the same.

Samsung chip catalog only has three types:
CPB: DDR4-2133 (1066MHz @ CL=15, tRCD=15, tRP=15)
CRC: DDR4-2400 (1200MHz @ CL=17, tRCD=17, tRP=17)
CTD: DDR4-2666 (1333MHz @ CL=19, tRCD=19, tRP=19)
But that's all tested at 1.2V
I guess stick manufacturers buy these chips, bump voltage to 1.35V or whatever they consider "safe" and test max frequency and latency possible (idk if it's usually per stick or per bulk, in DDR2 days some manufacturers advertised every stick being tested manually)

Actually, out of the three types above, which one should have better OC chances?
>>

Nvidia GPUs generally shit the bed when they run out of VRAM. It's easy to use 3GB of VRAM. And lots of games use 3GB+ of VRAM.

Your build looks good, though.

>>59985627
Yeah, as long as you don't put a bloated OS on it.
Win7 with most services disabled, aero disabled, and a decent enough GPU, like, yeah a 7950 but really just an RX550 ($80 USD) or RX560 would be enough. Weaker, yes, but much more power efficient.
The CPU is strong enough.
Ideally you'd run Linux, though. But Blizzard is garbage and doesn't support Linux.

The later is going to be GPU bottlenecked in almost everything.
The former should almost always get higher FPS but will be basically CPU bottlenecked despite only being at 70% utilization and shit, so CPU to spare for other shit despite the higher FPS.
The only problem with that is that Nvidia's driver is, at least currently, sketchy on Ryzen in a fair number of games. I would assume they'd fix it, but they haven't said anything about it.

Need a mouse.
Need a monitor.
Have a budget of about $2,000.
The custom parts are my budget for each item.

Desired monitor: 1440p IPS. Perferably with freesync.

Desired mouse: anything big and comfortable. I used a fingertip grip but my ring and pinky finger don't have any room on smaller mice.

Need to chose the foundation for my Vega 1440p build, this is what i have so far:

I already have some parts like Define R5 and Hitachi 7k1000 HDD, others like SSD don't depend on the core build, just tell me if i'm stupid if i get the X370 instead the B350.
Target is good value high-end cool'n'quiet build that i can put under my desk. Budget isn't that much limited, but i don't waste a large amount of money for no gains.
Also what about 1440p Freesync monitors? I read BenQ and Asus generally make good 1440p monitors, but some AOC has great value, but idk about AOC. It's generally not that popular here.

Well I think 1440p freesync ips gives you like 4 choices. I forget what they are, though.
AMD's website is actually outdated for Freesync monitors. You have to google around a bit.

>>59986508
Whichever way you go, get the cooler, assuming it's AM4 compatible. You won't get as good of an OC on the stock one. And it'll still be a cooler to use if you get zen2/3/4.

>>59986658
>Also are SSD's considered reliable
Good ones, yes.

>what should I take into consideration when picking a motherboard
For an i7:
4 phases minimum for stock. 8 minimum for OC. And a heatsink.
For Ryzen:
4 phases for either stock or OC, with a heatsink, minimum. Can get away with 3 if using a down-blower.
For an 8 core, if you want a crazy OC, probably 5-6 phases minimum.

Besides that, you pick the one with features you want.

580 8GB for 1440p.
Or get a good RX480 8GB if it's the same price as the 570 4GB.

I need some help troubleshooting my graphics card.

my motherboard (ga-z170x-ud5) has two options in its bios. One that tells the computer to look at Pcie Slot 1 and use its display adapter if available and the other option is to Disable the Onboard Graphics. the first Option lets me decide if i want the computer to look at Pcie slot 1,2,3, or Onboard Graphics.

When I plug in my GPU, with Priority to Pcie Slot 1 and onboard graphics on my screens stay black. the Screen doesnt even turn on when receiving output from the Motherboard, the screen turns on and stay black when receiving output from the gpu.

When I plug in my Gpu, with Priority to OnboardGraphics and onboard graphics on my computer turns on normally, but only the screen receiving output from the motherboard turns on. the Screen receiving output from the GPU doesnt turn on.

(took over 8 hours to figure that out)

once i got my computer on and check device manager, it had a Yellow Triangle over it in the display adaptor section, but it was named "microsoft display adaptor." I went to Nvidia's driver page and installed the Gtx1080 drivers for the Zotac Gtx1080 Amp Edition and once they were installed on the computer the name changed to "Nvidia Geforce gtx 1080," but the Yellow Triangle remains.

when i click on the gtx1080 in device manager its device status is "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

What should I try from here.

I'll look for the 1080s and I'll see about the PSU. How exactly do I identify a shitty PSU ? Bronze rating isn't enough ?

I want to go for 1080p 144Hz since I'd like to think it's more "future proof" (pushing 1440p will be a lot harder for the CPU/GPU than pushing 1080p in a couple of years) and mainly because I'm playing a lot of old pc games (1990 onwards) and emulators, besides AAA titles, which wouldn't be able run on nearly as good or at all at 1440p as they would on 1080p.On the other hand, they will be able run prettier in general (1080p will look like shit on a 27inch 1440p display) a lot smoother and a lot more consistent on a 1080p 144Hz display. Also I'm just fine with 1080p.

Anon with really bad memory ( >>59981115 ) reporting.
At 1.4V computer does not boot, even the memory settings autorecovery system does not work, had to reset cmos.
All subsequent testing done at 1866-16-18-18-1.35V. Yes, fucking 1866.

y-cruncher (all tests enabled) seems to be the reliable way to initiate bsod chain, with at most two minutes from finishing memory allocation to crash. Thanks again for suggesting it. After the first bsod system goes unstable for 10-15 minutes with 2-3 bsods/reboots during boot or within a minute from logon (including windows installer / winpe / live linux, so it's not drivers) and subsequent bsods on any cpu stress.
OCCT did not crash in 2 hours of PSU mode.

Running individual tests in y-cruncher now. All except NTT going for 30 minutes so far.

I can't help but feel that the door on my Define R5 is completely starving the two Arctic F12s that I have in the front of air.
Testing with a very thin piece of toilet paper, even on 50% speed they can't get enough air to provide a nice flow all the way through the computer when the door is closed, and cranking up the speed does jack shit.
The problem is immediately removed if I have the door open, but that makes the thing look like a turd.

This is all rather disappointing since I was told that the side slits were adequate for a good flow on their own.

Verdict: don't buy this case if you care about good airflow.

I'm measuring it from there.
If the door is open, the air will happily go all the way through the whole case, if it's closed it doesn't, no matter what the fan speed is.
>>
>>59989369
just checked with pretty thick note paper

stock fans on min, no difference between open and closed door, pushes that paper about 30 degrees from the fan 1 cm away
maybe f12 suck for this case

you'd be safer with corsair 200R
>>
>>59989349

>are the fans on the R5 good enough, or should I switch them out?

They're alright. They mainly are focused on low noise so they don't push too much air. It really depends on what you are going to be cooling - if you are only using a handful of drives (i.e can remove the top drive cage) and your typical 100w cpu along with a <200w gpu they will suffice.

>>59989436

Such imprecise measuring doesn't lend itself well. If you had really high rpm fans it is more obvious.

I'm heavily traumatized because of slow hard drive speeds so I was planning to get the M.2 Samsung 960 Evo with 250GB but something tells me I should use the money to get the Samsung 850Evo SATA SSD with 500GB instead. It's either more speed or more space. What should I do?

>is pic related acceptable?
Yes.

But we need to know the price, to seeif it's more expensive than what it shoudl be. read the OP and please build the same thing on pcpartpicker.com and compare the prices.

>>

The BIOS update requires a non-Kaby Lake cpu to do, so I hope you have one lying around or can borrow one.
I'd change your RAM to a faster clock speed, even 2300 will make a difference and won't cost much more.
The 1050 ti is not recommended in the OP for a reason, its just not good enough for the price point it asks, wait for the 470 to drop down because of the 500 series release and get that.
AFAIK the PS4 Pro is on equal terms with a 470, don't know about its CPU though.
>>
>>59990266

>figured it would be better to help render/edit videos

It does nothing other than rpovide better I/O.

> plus it's the nicest and cheapest x370 board I'd prefer to buy

I can't argue the preference, but realistically only reason to get x370 is for any of the following-

1) to-the-limit overclocking
2) shitloads of sata for drives
3) crossfire/sli

The only one that would remotely apply would be number 2 (and its a reason I went x370 - I have 8 hard drives in use).

There never was an 8 core desktop chip based on the jaguar core iirc, but you're looking at more IPC than vishera but less than kaveri. That is still way, way behind ryzen and anything Intel has made in the last few years.

This is for work. Will throw an optical in there I have just for incase someone hands me an optical disk and I have a video card lying around. Seems like the best I could get out of the current chips. The memory is a premium but its got 3200 out of the box was made for ryzen and has that low latency. Could tighten up with some cheaper memory but I wanted to try it out.

Any thoughts ideas? Probably will build two of them dropping the second to a 1600 or something in the r5 range without a x on it.

So I have this GPU, and right below, almost touching it, some sound card. That sound card is roughly half the size of the GPU.

Since the sound card is sort of "blocking" part of each fan (the GPU has two), is airflow going to be shitty enough that it'd be more convenient for me to just take that sound card away?

I was fixing the "cable management" dumb teenager me did five years ago and unplugging the damn thing took me 15 minutes of finagling it with a flathead. Now I'm trying to plug it back in and it'll slide in about 1/2 a centimeter into the socket but won't make a solid connection.

No, the model and the manufacturer that corsair has make those.

Avoid Corsair and EVGA low end models. They changed manufacturers last year and are pretty junk now.
Go read reviews to find a good one around $50-$70.

lol. Yes, it's fine. It will generally perform at least a bit better than a stock clocked 4770k which runs SC2 fine.
You got way caught up into its "single core performance is bad" memes. It's just slightly behind the best of Intel there.
>>
>>59990454
eh. It depends on what you think of good or mediocre.
I think most of us think the 212Evo is mediocre.
Yes, the stock cooler is basically a 212Evo that doesn't spin up as high. It's as good as it is on a medium fan and quiet load. It just doesn't get loud as fuck to cool more than that.

For a stock cooler, it's fantastic. Easily worth $20. But most people would rather use a $35-$60 cooler for that 4+GHz. That makes it "mediocre" whereas Intel's as "shit".
