Im installing manjaro on my old dust box to play around and experiment, its an old machine, dual core amd64, 4gb ram and a radeon 260 gpu.
should i install the free or not free driver? what are the differences?
also, GRUB (i think) is extremely laggy, like over a second between me pressing a key and it having an effect. Is this normal during installing from a usb or is this how responsive the OS will be when setup?

I upgraded (or tried to) my jessie stable to stretch testing. All seems fine, except that some xfce4 font related settings got screwed.
The labels of the desktop icons aren't centered, xfce4-terminal has 0 padding between the menu items (most software is fine), directory labels are misaligned...

Deleting my ~/.config/xfce4 did nothing.
Any ideas on what component is screwing up?

Since im SSHing to the pi, the only way to operate is via terminal.

Thus my torrent client needs to be able to be operated via terminal.

I got to a point where I have deluged ( a torrent client) setup in terminal via it's deluge-console. However it just not work.

it downloads 1.8MiB and then stops.

I'm certain I have my download directory set up correctly.

I have access to the internet on the pi.

Also worth mentioning I'm connected to Sweden.ovpn.

How/why is it that windows shits the bed on certain things compared to Linux? I recently replaced my i7 setup with a Ryzen r7-1700 and of course, different motherboard to match. I know that the former Intel build has many drivers and motherboard components that are a bit different. I tried booting my old windows install for shits and giggles, instant BSOD.

I then booted my Linux Ubuntu install, and after about 15 seconds of grub telling me "unknown hardware detected" it booted right up. Ran a standard "sudo apt update" and the formerly undetected CPU was now fully named in screenfetch and the like. Are drivers and such not as deeply integrated in Linux as they are in windows? Or is it something like Linux can pick and choose which driver to use for the new device, while windows has it's drivers baked into the OS itself?

Oh and I managed to get some files i forgot about from my old windows install before I zero wiped all my drives. Thanks Ubuntu!

I had to reset my computer and I decided to install it in /etc. Trying to start it up through "startx" and all that displays is my current directory. Could it be because I installed it in /etc? I already had a dedicated Win7 drive full of files years ago before I installed Arch so I just bought a second hard drive to have less of a headache with the install dealing with partitions and the possibility of wiping all my data. Now whenever I want to play a game or something I just unplug the Arch drive and plug the W7 one in before booting. Not the most convenient but the side panel of my case doesn't attach properly anyway so I just leave it off and it takes less time than selecting boot media in the BIOS.

Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.

Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?

Any tips for decreasing browser memory usage? I've always been using chromium, I know it's never been great at memory management but 32GB of ram is excessive. I try not to run too many extensions or scripts and have tried ones to help but those only seem to just kill the tab. I do use a lot of tabs averaging around 600-1000 depending on how busy the day is which makes single threading chromium not an option. Is firefox better for this or is there something else to consider?

And I do run servers that parse website content to monitor stuff for me, I've already reduced how many tabs I need but that's a number that keeps growing

Im trying to get either Ubuntu or Manjaro on the new XPS 15 9560 and cant get either on the machine with adequate drivers for the killer wifi adapter(Ubuntu)/nvidia drivers(Manjaro) and the machine doesnt have an ethernet port. Any pointers?

I'm planning to learn emacs. I've gone through a bit of the tutorial but it's got me thinking. Should I dive in headfirst to vanilla emacs or just jump to some faggots config and trust it's good before eventually customizing it for myself as I become more accustomed to emacs?

Yeah but make sure it runs in the foreground too.
I don't know elogind but usually there is a command line action to run the program without forking. Look for something like --no-daemon or --foreground or something.

If it doesn't there is a tool called fghack that might work but YMMV.

I've got like bare minimum detection of a drive here. BIOS doesn't see it, can't mount it at all, can't format, make partition table or anything. fdisk doesn't see it. hdparm does though, but I can't erase it because of mysterious input output errors.

udisks sees it, tells me there's a bad sector, SMART datas literally not even there.

Is it dead or something?

Are you using eudev? Try installing the entire gnome metapackage. It has a lot of bloat but might need something that GNOME requires without systemd. AFAIK I also sometimes get a libsystemd error but it still works.

Just got an old Acer netbook, with 1 GB RAM and a sizeable HDD. Comfy size.

Powershell is probably one of my favorites. Objects > Text, especially now with Powershell 5 (Oneget is integrated by default allowing for modules to be downloaded from PSGallery or other repos of your choosing)

Group policy is a big one, I have yet to see a comparable solution that allows so much control and enforcement over the operating system configuration.

Event logging, this is probably more of a personal preference, but I tend to prefer the Windows security event/Regular event logging to normal Unix style syslogs. It's more organized and usually more verbose.

Most of the other things are Enterprise related, not really applicable to the discussion.
