alias feh-fun='feh -t --action ';''feh -F --action1 ';''echo -n "$PWD/%n" | xclip ' -f %L -\| %F''
# 0 a a1 a a2 3 3 2 10
# 0 don't have to be '
# 1 don't have to be '
# a have to be '
# 2 don't have '
# 3 have to be "

>the command should execute feh in thumbnail mode
>`--action` executes a custom command when you click on the thumbnail instead of opening the image
>in this case it executes feh again, this time in normal mode, loading the file list (-f %L) and starting from the selected file (-\| %F) in fullscreen (-F)
>`--action1` makes it so when I press 1 the file path is inserted into the clipboard
>`;` prevents feh from moving on to the next image when the action is performed

your task: properly quote the command string to make it work (like the numbers show)
you can use: `'`, `"`, and `\`, and other kinds of bash syntax, but NO FUNCTIONS

install xclip or just redirect the output into some file or somethig instead of piping to xclip to see if it works

Reminder we need a source based/binary hybrid distro with a bloatless package manager, a source based base system and kernel installer like Source Mage and a sane binary package management like Slackware.

One reason why is for when Flatpack comes into play the added library hell will start and most popular distros will want you to install libraries you don't want.

Hi /fglt/
Im installing manjaro on my old dust box to play around and experiment, its an old machine, dual core amd64, 4gb ram and a radeon 260 gpu.
should i install the free or not free driver? what are the differences?
also, GRUB (i think) is extremely laggy, like over a second between me pressing a key and it having an effect. Is this normal during installing from a usb or is this how responsive the OS will be when setup?

Im a complete newbie at linux and dont think installing from a command line is the way to go for me just yet, if its only this bad as it installs im not concerned, i just dont want to continue if the OS itself is going to run like this. Also, can you advise me in regards to the driver issue? free or not free? Ive googled and it seems its the graphics driver, im using an older amd gpu, any idea what would be best?
>>

Maybe first start off with Ubuntu?

And you'll probably want the not free one for Manjaro. Just means the drivers.
>>
>>59982948
Not that I don't appreciate the effort from the pkgsrc team, but it lacks things like a kernel installer and a better integration, and Guix is better anyway.
It is a good option I would say, but the package manager from Source Mage is a better alternative, if it only it didn't use such stupid names it would attract more people.

It doesn't matter, none of this matters. There's nothing stopping you from having multiple DEs installed and just choosing the one you want to use depending on your mood. On my first go I installed ALL of the DEs.

You are aware that you can have multiple DEs installed and all you have to do to switch between them is log out and pick the one you want from a menu and log back in right?

Coparing LOC/size makes no sense. You need to read the source and check why there are more LOC and what they represent: Features, checks, efficience, lots of comments so newcomers can hack around.

>>59983964
>bsd
Good example. Compare GNU cat to BSD cat: GNU cat seems to have more LOC and therefore must be bloated, but when you look at the source code, you see why: GNU cat carfully calculates the optimal block size and reads/writes shit in chunks (which makes it a lot faster), than the more simple BSD version, which reads char by char. All this is also well commented in the source code.

tl;dr "GNU bloat" is a meme

It uses git instead of rsync for portage
they have a bunch of riced stage3's for specific arches
the creator of gentoo left and made funtoo

I will say the Funtoo specific documentation is of lesser quality but I think that
is because most of the Funtoo users use the Gentoo wiki.

some of the tools in the funtoo project are great and honestly just make sense
like boot-update which is a wrapper script for setting up boot loaders

I'm using the technique known as "greentexting" where you use the greater than sign, commonly used for quoting text, to tell a story in short points.
That's a very common sight on 4chan. You must be new here. I can't believe I just logged in just to type this comment.

Hey friendly gnu/linux guys. I'm a noob to linux, but im slowly learning my way around raspbian whilst doing a project which involves turning a raspberry Pi into a torrent machine controlled via SSH.

Since im SSHing to the pi, the only way to operate is via terminal.

Thus my torrent client needs to be able to be operated via terminal.

I got to a point where I have deluged ( a torrent client) setup in terminal via it's deluge-console. However it just not work.

it downloads 1.8MiB and then stops.

I'm certain I have my download directory set up correctly.

I have access to the internet on the pi.

Also worth mentioning I'm connected to Sweden.ovpn.

How do i torrent via terminal only?

This might be more of a /sqt/ post, but here goes:
>assembling my first computer
>never tried windows 10
>gaining a bit of experience with UNIX systems from some CS classes
>want to try installing my first distro but not sure what to choose

I know Mint as the "linux for people who like Windows"
And then the bigger distros like Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora.

Should I just stick with one of those for now? I have an interest in machine learning/deep learning. Are there any geared towards that similar to how backtrack/Kali is geared towards pentesting?

Is there any difference between installing Windows 10 first on an empty SSD followed by a linux distro, or instlaling a linux distro then windows 10. I've heard windows 10 doesn't play well with installing new OSes? Might be just a meme.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

How/why is it that windows shits the bed on certain things compared to Linux? I recently replaced my i7 setup with a Ryzen r7-1700 and of course, different motherboard to match. I know that the former Intel build has many drivers and motherboard components that are a bit different. I tried booting my old windows install for shits and giggles, instant BSOD.

I then booted my Linux Ubuntu install, and after about 15 seconds of grub telling me "unknown hardware detected" it booted right up. Ran a standard "sudo apt update" and the formerly undetected CPU was now fully named in screenfetch and the like. Are drivers and such not as deeply integrated in Linux as they are in windows? Or is it something like Linux can pick and choose which driver to use for the new device, while windows has it's drivers baked into the OS itself?

Oh and I managed to get some files i forgot about from my old windows install before I zero wiped all my drives. Thanks Ubuntu!

Pic semi-related. My new CPU.

Ubuntu is just a Debian derivative

Generally what new paradigm makes it into Fedora ends up in every other distro (systemd, selinux, wayland, gnome, etc) so you get a head start on learning new software that will eventually be used on all distros. Ubuntu tries to make its own software (upstart, unity, etc) and FAILS every fucking time.

I have a low opinion of Gentoo GNU/Linux.

Gentoo is a GNU/Linux distribution, but its developers don't recognize this; they call it "Gentoo Linux". That means they are treating me and the GNU Project disresepectfully.

More importantly, Gentoo steers the user towards nonfree programs, which is why it is not one of our recognized free distros.
>>
>>59991792
No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
>>
>>59991700
Well excuuuuuse me for being amazed by a blast from the past. Contrary to what some may believe, I don't collect 2000's tech for fucking fun.
>>
>>59991792
Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.

You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.

Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?

Torvalds actually agrees: In the 1991 release notes for versions 0.01 to 0.11 of Linux (which was not released under the GNU General Public License until version 0.12), Torvalds wrote, "Sadly, a kernel by itself gets you nowhere [...] Most of the tools used with linux are GNU software." https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/Historic/old-versions/RELNOTES-0.01

Torvalds also wrote during the 1992 Tanenbaum-Torvalds debate that, "As has been noted (not only by me), the linux kernel is a miniscule part of a complete system". https://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.minix/msg/ac1b04eb0e09c03e

Any tips for decreasing browser memory usage? I've always been using chromium, I know it's never been great at memory management but 32GB of ram is excessive. I try not to run too many extensions or scripts and have tried ones to help but those only seem to just kill the tab. I do use a lot of tabs averaging around 600-1000 depending on how busy the day is which makes single threading chromium not an option. Is firefox better for this or is there something else to consider?

And I do run servers that parse website content to monitor stuff for me, I've already reduced how many tabs I need but that's a number that keeps growing

As opposed to what? Linux? Wake up friendo, the Linux kernel isn't magic either. If you bothered to look into the differences between both operating systems you would see both of them have their merits. Stop being such a fanboy.

>Excellent example are the oceans of money Microsoft spent to port it to mobile.

What the fuck are you even talking about? It's literally Windows NT and Windows core architecture (Networking, Filesystem etc..), with a mobile interface. That Microsoft invested money in developing Windows for mobile devices means nothing.

Why is /g/ infested with all these kiddies that can't think for themselves?

>>59995295
>merits
Name some besides games and game hardware.
>>
>>59995406

Most people on /g/ won't care about these things because they generally do not use them.

Powershell is probably one of my favorites. Objects > Text, especially now with Powershell 5 (Oneget is integrated by default allowing for modules to be downloaded from PSGallery or other repos of your choosing)

Group policy is a big one, I have yet to see a comparable solution that allows so much control and enforcement over the operating system configuration.

Event logging, this is probably more of a personal preference, but I tend to prefer the Windows security event/Regular event logging to normal Unix style syslogs. It's more organized and usually more verbose.

Most of the other things are Enterprise related, not really applicable to the discussion.
