Run Afterburner and check your CPU usage first. If it's not getting pegged at 100% then you're fine. If it's just for gaming then a 6600k/7600k will be fine. Only really need an i7 for something like BF1 which will use those extra cores or you if you wanna run high frame rates.

At 1080p, it is very likely that a i5 6400 will bottleneck a 1070.

Even an overclocked 2600k at 4.4 ghz, which is far more powerful bottlenecks it to a certain degree (this is Titan X maxwell, very simmilar to a 1070).

If the 6700k fits in your motherboard it's a great choice op.

There is little chance the LGA and chipset made for 4 cores is going to work for 6. Especially if it's a 140w TDP chip.

People wishing for this to be the case, which seems to be so many on /g/, are going to be disappointed. Intel hasn't had 3 generations on the same socket in forever.

Unless you are planning to do some productive work on that PC (something that actually benefits from the many cores Ryzen has) I really don't see ANY reason to upgrade for now, especially not to a slightly newer i5. An i7 7700k should be OK for just Vidya, but it's too expensive IMO.

But no, Ryzen is great for gaming since they 6 cores and 8 cores very smooth and consistent, and not far behind the Intel 4c/8t parts on averages in most games, whereas i5s are a stuttering mess in tons of games.
But a 6700k or 7700k overclocked is going to produce higher averages, still. But it's more expensive than a 1600/1600X.
