You can download Mac OS Classic games and programs at

http://macintoshgarden.org
https://www.macintoshrepository.org

Some of the best titles to have a look at:

MS Office / Word (I think they have up to 2004)
Warcraft II and III
Lemmings (Vanilla, Oh No! More Lemmings, Holiday)
Wolfenstein 3D
Treasure MathStorm

My favorite (although I haven't gotten it to run in an emulator):
Spelunx

If you want to program for Mac OS Classic, you'll want:
MPW (Macintosh Programmer's Workshop)
ResEdit

Nice. I've been using winworldpc.com. It's a great site with a good community. I used it to download the Mac OS 9 image for this computer. It's a G4 Cube, through just the board and parts of the metal frame. It was totally trashed when I got it, so it's in a cardboard box under my desk. It works though.

Also, I tries running OS/2 on a ThinkPad R60 (oldest IBM machine I have) and it booted the first disc fine. Second disc got past hard drive detection and then had an error message, so I guess the R60 hardware is just too new. Sucks being restricted to a VM.

Other than the ugly UI it's better than Vista and XP. Better than than the garbage that is 8-10 as well. Still, it's a botnet piece of shit that isn't retro. If you think it is, you're probably 14 years old.

>>59994496
The only operating systems that MS put out after Windows 2k that are "rock solid" have been the enterprise editions which are still not the greatest for home use. Microsoft has only gone downhill since the 90s.
>>
>>59981423
I loved me some power pete back in the day.
>>
>>59994897
>have been the enterprise editions which are still not the greatest for home use.
You sound like the kind of guy who thinks we still live in the 3Dlabs era when someone mentions workstation graphics cards, too. Enterprise-branded versions are identical to their mainstream counterparts in almost every way that matters, at most they might have a few settings tweaked under the hood that don't make a difference to the end user in that use case.
>>
>>59994982
>Enterprise-branded versions are identical to their mainstream counterparts in almost every way that matters

You can deal with the bloat, general instability, privacy issues, and other bullshit if you want. Especially with Windows 10 you have candy crush and stuff preinstalled with ads in the start menu and file explorer. Enterprise editions of the Windows operating system are much different than the home editions for example. You're a pleb if you use anything else for work. You're a cuck if you use anything newer than Windows XP for personal stuff.
>>
>>59994785

It would still be cool if someone could find some old AIX images for me to add to my archive, though, so I can eventually throw them up to the public.
>>
>>59995027
>Enterprise editions of the Windows operating system are much different than the home editions for example.
Not really, they just don't come with the consumer-oriented extras. No bundled games on 7, for example. Vanilla 10 Enterprise includes most live tiles, while LTSB strips out pretty much everything.

In all cases, they're the same in every other respect. It's all I've used for years.
>>
>>59995033
Nope. I've only got a 7011-250

Do you need AIX 4.3.3? That's the oldest I have. I've got 5L as well, but that's pretty common, by comparison.

Between "fuck this shit I'll get my own machine" and "went to the store and bought it", maybe 2 years and half, if I remember. I tolerated being accused with everything wrong in the computer most of my high school.
The long delay between ME and 2008 was mainly due to me not having the balls to stand for myself and hardware getting outdated in the living room.

As how my father reacted, well, like almost every tech illiterate people. When some "tech boy" who touch your computer, every problem that happens after is his fault.

Got an iMac G4 sitting in my room with a rather curious problem. Dunno if any anon here would have had a similar experience but it's worth asking.

So my iMac G4 is one of the original 15 inch models, the ones that could natively run OS9. When I got it the machine had its ram maxed out to 1 gig however I only found this out when I opened the machine. Why? I found out later that for some odd reason this iMac G4 seemed to only want to address half of the ram that was actually installed in it.

It only gets weirder from here. I spent time fiddling with the ram trying different combinations and even completely different chips pulled from other working machines with no luck. No matter what ram I installed into it the iMac only wanted to address half of that total.

At this point I had basically decided to throw in the towel. 512mb of ram is still more than enough for OS9 anyway.

However a week or so ago something strange happened. I booted up the iMac that day and as usual, checked the system profiler just through force of habit and was dumbfounded to see the machine all of a sudden detected it had 768mb of ram installed. A quick run of apple hardware test later confirmed that one of the ram chips was now being identified in full. I hadn't touched the ram chips for months at this point so this just confused me even more.

To top this whole thing off, a few hours later the mac reverted back to its original behavior of "only addressing half the installed ram" at complete random.

From research I have read conflicting reports. Some people say the ram might be bad, others say iMac G4's are very picky with ram and I might just need to buy the right type of ram, some have said the board may be at fault. Whatever it is I'm stumped.

Has any anon here had a similar issue with an iMac G4 and if so what caused it and how (if you managed to do so) did you fix it?
>>
>>59995951
SJW = KYS
>>
>>59996224
Sounds like bad RAM or the slot on the board is messed up. I had a 2006 Intel MacBook and it recognized all 4GB of RAM but was only able to use 2GB or else it would crash. I opened the machine and one of the cards was literally burned. Some of the older Macs kill the RAM for some odd reason. So I replaced the RAM card and it worked fine.
>>
>>59996510
I'm hoping it's just something as easy to fix as that since I tried other chips on the board that worked fine in my iMac G3 and they all had the same issue in the G4. The only thing I've heard commonly though is that iMac G4's are super picky with ram so it might just be that it doesn't like the ram I've got installed. I'll have to order some tested ram at some point and then see if it likes that.

OP here. I decided to set up a VM on my desktop so that I don't mess up the actual install on my G4 Cube for testing programs. Sheepshaver seems easy to use. So I grabbed the 64-bit .deb file from http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/ubuntu and like you said, it wouldn't install. The error said that the version number must start with a number. So here's a fix.

1) Download the .deb file.

2) Go to downloads, right click, and choose "extract here", then rename the extracted folder to "sheepshaver" for simplicity.

3) Go to the sheepshaver folder, then DEBIAN, then open the control file.

4) Find Version and edit it to simply read "Version: 2.3.0.20060514.1-0ubuntu1-amd64".

5) Save the file and close the file browser window.

6) Repack the folder into a Debian package by opening the terminal and typing "sudo dpkg-deb --build /home/insteryourusernamehere/Downloads/sheepshaver" and it will automatically build you an installable .deb file.

7) Go back to the downloads file and double click the newly created sheepshaver.deb and it should install.

It has Win98SE installed and while it's awesome for most DOS stuff, some games with fast scrolling don't really seem to like the Matrox and produce noticeable hitching. I probably should look for a quicker video card.

I had some better cards but they died:

>FX5200 - GPU chipset up in smoke (literally)
>MX440 - won't display anything anymore, will prevent MB from POSTing
>MX400 - won't display anything but will POST successfully
Pretty much the only cards I have that will work are:

>HD3450 - already used in a XP SP3/Pentium 4 2.8GHz machine
>ATi Xpert2000 32MB AGP - used in a silent Pentium 4 2.4GHz machine
>nVIDIA Riva TNT2 M64 - used in this current machine

I plan on getting some FX5200/5500 cards. Not the best either but as you said, it might be a lot better than TNT2.

The difference has increased dramatically with Windows 10.
Windows 10 is full of bloatware, adware, nagware and pointless restrictions you didn't have before.
However Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB has none of those things. It still suffers from a lot of the other Windows 10 problems, but the difference between that and something like Windows 10 Pro (which does not seem to be aimed at the professional market in any way (installing minecraft and candy crush automatically??)) is tremendous.

>For this one, I might actually try and repair that old MX400 and get it to display stuff on my LCD.

It probably needs to be recapped. My FX5500 needs new caps 'cause it's only stable for about 10 minutes then shits all over itself. I think the 6200 may need a cap job as well 'cause the last time I had it running it was acting a bit weird.

forgot to add, key a watchful eye on the VRM caps on those old boards, especially pcchips stuff. I think I've had to recap every single Athlon XP and P4 board I've owned... Yeah, thinking about it I did have to recap every one of them. I had an MSI K7 Master-S that didn't show any real signs of needing to be recapped but had an issue where I would plug in my Korg K25 keyboard via USB and it would start to shit all over itself. I couldn't figure that one out until one day when I noticed a cap bulging. Recapped, then plugged in the Korg and it worked flawlessly.

Basically, take a look at all of the caps on your mobo, taking an especially close look at all of them on the agb and pci slots. Your issues with those Geforce4 cards may just be bad caps on the board.
>>
>>60003446
That GF4 is already recapped.

As for the motherboard (the actual model is Matsonic MS8137C+ - another ECS rebrand) I haven't had any issues with any ECS-based board that used OST caps. G-Luxon however...that's another story. (also fuck G-Luxons, I lost a really nice SD-RAM KT133A board because of them - ECS K7VZA rev3.0,had universal AGP slot)

Loaded for sure, ethernet, two SCSI controllers and a 8 way RS-232 card, gonna swap the RS-232 card out for a graphics card when it arrives.

>Wonder if you could get someone to make a new key for it, too, don't think they use anything special if I remember right.
I already took the pins out of the lock, so I can just use any small key/screwdriver with it.

It boots fine as much information I can get off the 3 digit display, I might try to see if I can get access over serial.

The bigger problem right now is, that the graphics cards I could find are only 3W3 with Sync-on-Green, it's not a major problem, I do have several LCDs with Sync-on-Green support, but I doubt any of the CRTs I have supports it.

Then again, I think even building an adapter myself shouldn't be too hard to just convert it to VGA.

I'd love you for this, but maybe base it more on MacOS 9's.
You could start with XFCE's panel as a base since its super lightweight

>>
>>60020298
>Windows ME is a continuation of the Windows 9x model, but with restricted access to real mode MS-DOS in order to decrease system boot time.[7] This was one of the most unpopular changes in Windows ME, because applications that needed real mode DOS to run, such as older disk utilities, did not run under Windows ME (although the system could either be booted into real mode DOS using a bootable Windows ME floppy disk or the configuration could be tweaked manually to re-enable access to the underlying MS-DOS)
>>
>>60020290
It wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. The mark you see is because I first applied thermal paste and then applied superglue to have it stick to the MB. I did this way back so that it wouldn't fry. (the motherboard came with a hot-as-4th-layer-of-hell 3GHz Prescott HT - even with the heatsink on, I chose to replace it with a 2.8GHz Northwood for the safety of the motherboard and power supply (which is built from various parts)

doesn't really feel like PCs have changed much at all since around 2005 beyond the numbers and further integration of components

Yeah, SATA and PCIe are still relevant.
SATA is slowly starting to die because of PCIe taking over as the storage interface, but probably will still be around years after it's discontinued by main retailers because of infrastructures.

Shit has changed over the last decade and half, multi threading is more relevant now but else there haven't been any major leaps, there are rumors that Intel is developing a new memory architecture, that combines local storage with RAM, that would be a leap for sure, until then, it's basically "legacy" systems all around.

Is there a simple way, like making an html page for 4cahn / g/ and then clicking on file within the folder?

I haven't down CSS/XHTLM since before html5,
>>
>>60022391
Open page settings, top right corner
Tick custom CSS
Copy paste it there
Save

this
dont we have this general agreement that 2000 and older is /retro/?
As soon as you hit P4 and shit thats no longer retro.
A P3 i can still see as retro, but thats borderline.
>>
>>60023063
where is the shift though? at some point P4 will likely be old enough to be considered retro.

SNES were pretty much considered retro in the 2000s already when it was 15 years old... just saying.

You know what would really complete the aesthetics? These: web.archive.org/web/20160609092016/http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-media-player-skins#t1=all

we have this discussion in every thread

if all you want to do is jerk off to how old you are or whatever, then go to >>>/vr/ where the complaining about what defines "retro" and the attempts to restrict discussion along those lines was one of the chief reasons their retro threads were shitty, stale and boring

/g/ retro threads are usually just general catch-alls for old shit that isn't frequently discussed on this board, not only things that you had as a kid

pedantic groveling is cancer beyond measure

I was given a Power Mac G3 B&W, what's a comfy linux to put on it to watch Chinese cartoons and shitpost? Mint seems janky and lubuntu seemed very unstable.
>>
>>60025784
OpenBSD is probably the better alternate choice at this point.

But I don't think any operating system is going to make that use case fly on an old G3 system running PC100 and off-chip cache, so it's obligatory for me to say you'd probably get more fun out of OS 9 on it.

To be fair, Haiku took years to get WiFi support as well.
>>
>>60025896
I have no clue what to do with it. I hadn't had much interest in retro computing, hardly any in PPC, so Im quite lost with all of this stuff and from what I've read, It all seems like a mess. What would I have most fun doing on this and what kind of stuff should I expect to e able to do out of this machine??
>>

>>60025937

You can easily watch your chinese cartoons and shitpost on OS X Tiger. Just dl an ISO
>>
>>60025644
I'm only 20 years old, a P4 still isn't retro since they're post y2k and still kinda just "windows xp era shit"
They're just not that old. I can't look at my ThinkPad g40 and call it retro.
Is it old? Yeah that bitch is nearly 15 years old now.
Is it retro? Not at all.
Even a Pentium 3 is kind of on the edge of retro.
I just barely consider my 380ED to be retro, since that's only 1997. Plenty of people here have hardware from way before that.

>GeForce 3 Ti 200

My nigga. The computer my family finally upgraded our win 3.1 machine to had one of those. Shit was able to play games for ages and ages without feeling too slow.
>>
>>60026037
who gives a shit, I'm not trying to argue what is or isn't "retro" with you, I'm telling you that it doesn't matter for shit
if you don't want to talk about it, don't reply to it, the relative absence of dullards putting people down to feel good about otherwise trivial parts of themselves is one of the best parts of these kinds of threads
>>
>>60026118
Woah... That's the same backstory as me

My dad kept around his AT clone running Windows 3.1 until he upgraded to a WinXP Dimension 8200 with that exact card in it.

Pre-X Mac OS probably has one of the most well-archived commercial software bases in existence, if you ask me. There's tons of options for general productivity, content creation, media production, number crunching, development, games, god knows what else the Macintosh Garden has archived, the list goes on. It's just a matter of surfing the archive and picking up whatever you'd like and messing with it, see if you get any fun ideas.

>>60026000
I sure as fuck wouldn't run Tiger on one of those, especially if I'm expecting to play high resolution video on top of it. It would be an excruciating experience with less software options anyway.

I just tried installing MS-Office on my Dosbox Windows 3.1 install.

>You don't have SHARE.EXE
Looking into it, Dosbox doesn't support it apparently.

I guess I'll mess around with QEMU or VirtualBox tomorrow.

I'd still consider PPC stuff made after 2000 to be retro because it's not very well supported or widely used. PPC is kinda dead for consumer stuff now. It basically has the same sort of support as pre-2000 Intel hardware or ARM, despite being more powerful. But I do see where you're coming from with the P4.

>>60025784
An early OS X version like 10.2-10.4 or Debian.

>>60026641
CDE is pretty cool. I'm running Debian 9 right now so I'm sure someone has already compiled a version of it. I think I'll try and install it later.

>>60026720
Not bad.

>>60027831
Are those the camera that take 3.5 inch floppies? Neat find. Does it work?
>>
>>60027831
It looks cool, but there is nothing aesthetic about the images old digicams produce.
Film looks much better.
