Got an iMac G4 sitting in my room with a rather curious problem. Dunno if any anon here would have had a similar experience but it's worth asking.

So my iMac G4 is one of the original 15 inch models, the ones that could natively run OS9. When I got it the machine had its ram maxed out to 1 gig however I only found this out when I opened the machine. Why? I found out later that for some odd reason this iMac G4 seemed to only want to address half of the ram that was actually installed in it.

It only gets weirder from here. I spent time fiddling with the ram trying different combinations and even completely different chips pulled from other working machines with no luck. No matter what ram I installed into it the iMac only wanted to address half of that total.

At this point I had basically decided to throw in the towel. 512mb of ram is still more than enough for OS9 anyway.

However a week or so ago something strange happened. I booted up the iMac that day and as usual, checked the system profiler just through force of habit and was dumbfounded to see the machine all of a sudden detected it had 768mb of ram installed. A quick run of apple hardware test later confirmed that one of the ram chips was now being identified in full. I hadn't touched the ram chips for months at this point so this just confused me even more.

To top this whole thing off, a few hours later the mac reverted back to its original behavior of "only addressing half the installed ram" at complete random.

From research I have read conflicting reports. Some people say the ram might be bad, others say iMac G4's are very picky with ram and I might just need to buy the right type of ram, some have said the board may be at fault. Whatever it is I'm stumped.

Has any anon here had a similar issue with an iMac G4 and if so what caused it and how (if you managed to do so) did you fix it?

Sounds like bad RAM or the slot on the board is messed up. I had a 2006 Intel MacBook and it recognized all 4GB of RAM but was only able to use 2GB or else it would crash. I opened the machine and one of the cards was literally burned. Some of the older Macs kill the RAM for some odd reason. So I replaced the RAM card and it worked fine.

I'm hoping it's just something as easy to fix as that since I tried other chips on the board that worked fine in my iMac G3 and they all had the same issue in the G4. OP here. I decided to set up a VM on my desktop so that I don't mess up the actual install on my G4 Cube for testing programs. Sheepshaver seems easy to use. So I grabbed the 64-bit .deb file from http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/ubuntu and like you said, it wouldn't install. The error said that the version number must start with a number. So here's a fix.

1) Download the .deb file.

2) Go to downloads, right click, and choose "extract here", then rename the extracted folder to "sheepshaver" for simplicity.

3) Go to the sheepshaver folder, then DEBIAN, then open the control file.

4) Find Version and edit it to simply read "Version: 2.3.0.20060514.1-0ubuntu1-amd64".

5) Save the file and close the file browser window.

6) Repack the folder into a Debian package by opening the terminal and typing "sudo dpkg-deb --build /home/insteryourusernamehere/Downloads/sheepshaver" and it will automatically build you an installable .deb file.

7) Go back to the downloads file and double click the newly created sheepshaver.deb and it should install.

The difference has increased dramatically with Windows 10.
Windows 10 is full of bloatware, adware, nagware and pointless restrictions you didn't have before.
However Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB has none of those things. It still suffers from a lot of the other Windows 10 problems, but the difference between that and something like Windows 10 Pro (which does not seem to be aimed at the professional market in any way (installing minecraft and candy crush automatically??)) is tremendous.

forgot to add, key a watchful eye on the VRM caps on those old boards, especially pcchips stuff. I think I've had to recap every single Athlon XP and P4 board I've owned... Yeah, thinking about it I did have to recap every one of them. I had an MSI K7 Master-S that didn't show any real signs of needing to be recapped but had an issue where I would plug in my Korg K25 keyboard via USB and it would start to shit all over itself. I couldn't figure that one out until one day when I noticed a cap bulging. Recapped, then plugged in the Korg and it worked flawlessly.

Basically, take a look at all of the caps on your mobo, taking an especially close look at all of them on the agb and pci slots. Your issues with those Geforce4 cards may just be bad caps on the board.

As for the motherboard (the actual model is Matsonic MS8137C+ - another ECS rebrand) I haven't had any issues with any ECS-based board that used OST caps. G-Luxon however...that's another story. Need some help anons. Trying to get as close as OS 9 as I can but there's a few issues.
- No good iconsets from classic mac os
- Cursors are only available for windows
- Cant make directory menu say thunar or files

I already took the pins out of the lock, so I can just use any small key/screwdriver with it.

It boots fine as much information I can get off the 3 digit display, I might try to see if I can get access over serial.

The bigger problem right now is, that the graphics cards I could find are only 3W3 with Sync-on-Green, it's not a major problem, I do have several LCDs with Sync-on-Green support, but I doubt any of the CRTs I have supports it.

Then again, I think even building an adapter myself shouldn't be too hard to just convert it to VGA.

That is the SATA cable (I wrapped it in green electrical tape around it because it was a bit worn, and now it looks better) and it goes behind the motherboard tray, where I wrapped a SATA laptop harddrive (80GB Hitachi) around the DVD-ROM's IDE cable. Pre-X Mac OS probably has one of the most well-archived commercial software bases in existence, if you ask me. There's tons of options for general productivity, content creation, media production, number crunching, development, games, god knows what else the Macintosh Garden has archived, the list goes on.
