That a NF-A9x14 cooling a 7700k? Does it ramp up to full speed? I have one in my Ncase and shit is loud as fuck unless I use a low noise adapter. It's why I'm still wary of getting anything smaller than an Ncase.
>>
>>59978291
thanks man.

the beam is some kind of cross-brace. idk if it's strictly needed but it came with the case and it gave me something to tie cables to. I should sleeve the fan cables at some point when I have it open again.

rackmounting all my shit sure made my desk a lot neater but none of the cases have the Nice Things that desktop enthusiast cases have these days.

well, the tempered glass can be bought for the maker 5, I was talking more about other features like fan/radiator mounting points, good clearance so you can mess around inside the hardware without the need for baby sized hands, etc
>>
>>59979726
not a bad case, cant really judge without seeing how its together. ?/10
>>
>>59979801
idk how it compares to the regular maker 5, but the 5t has plenty of space and has great cable management. Theres a channel on the back to route cables through, and plenty of tie down spots. I have a 280mm rad in the top and there is space left over.

>empty space
>desktop machine from previous picture, with door open
>home server (i7 930, 24GB, 12-drive ZFS array, ~16TB usable)
>in background: clutter from some shit I ordered

Future plans:
>cover the blank spaces and side with black cardboard, get some stickers/photos/posters to put on it to brighten up my dull, depressing room and life
>get a drawer or two to put in the back
>if the power company acts this summer like it did last summer, get a UPS
>maybe build some RPi cluster thing like Sysadmin did, that always looked like a fun project. I could run BOINC on it or something

Yes, in a strict sense this is stupid and I don't need to have my shit in a rack. But it was fun and it is easier to keep my cabling organized than it was when I had all "conventional" stuff.

Recently moved over to ryzen. 1700/gigabyte X370 aurous K5. Kind of regretting the motherboard. It has me relying on voltage offsets rather than being able to manually set a voltage. I can set the voltage for +0.300mv, but then I still don't have LLC of any kind, so I'm at there Mercy of the VRMs and praying it doesn't decide to Voltage boost to Oblivion on boot.

Prime95 testing it right now and with the stock cooler, it's only hitting 62C under a blend torture. Voltage doesn't even peak at anything more than 1.075v too.

I think this is the first build I will not OC on. This is my first build I EVER dint feel the need to tinker to get what I want. My skylake build needed a delid and undervolted setup to be viable in the long term. (Which is why it's gone now).Even only 3.2ghz it puts up 60+ fps in games at 1440p. Only a tiny bit slower than the 20 thread i7-6950X too in multithreading.

Don't feel bad, my 390x runs at 80-85c@ 1100mhz with a 140mm blowing right on it and ~200cfm max case flow. Keeps the windows defrosted. Looks like it's part of the case stuffed in there like that. You might get better performance with std fans strapped to the hs

Thanks, same box since 2011.
The rear is usb2. Pc is tucked away, reaching the i/o blind with the rog connect and cmos reset buttons can be tricky. Cable running between the hsf and gpu is for front usb3 add on. Stupid placement of header. Only other option is to get an extension and run it through the back and down over the i/o,

I did set it up but nothing happened.

So I'm not sure if it's simply not possible of it something else is broken. Doubt it broken since it's actually spinning though.

I can set it to react on a certain temperature with a certain speed in percentage.
But it just won't respond to this second cpufan slot, which I'm guessing is just a fan power slot.

It's not gonna be an issue anyway as long as I get a new one through warranty.

My itx server will still run P55 with a x3440, probably until it dies.. Which will be years.

This is the one I found most promising, arriving within a couple weeks I hope.

Pros:
-9 phase cpu power, handy for overclocking
-good pcie layout
-has both m2 and m2ultra for those who need it
-ps2 mouse and keyboard ports
-enough usb3/3.1 ports
-low price

Cons I've found so far:
-no bclk overclocking if I understand correctly, only the top x370 boards have this.
-limited to the 24 cpu lanes (tho I won't be needing more anyway)

I got them both for free when i bought the server on the left for about 100$ a few years back.

i am not using them for anything else than display tho. planning on purchasing a passive cooling GPU for the server that's low power.

Finally got rid of my last Noctua fan. Both the NF-12 and NF-A14 produce annoying sounds at certain RPM.

Let's start with the NF-12 where the fixed blades in the front create a disgusting amount of turbulence starting from 800-900RPM. I could actually hear when the fan ramped up from across the living room. The frequency of that sound is so fucking loud that I attached the stock Cooler Master Hyper 212 fan and now it's quiet again.

The NF-A14 produce a very audible ticking/clicking sound at low RPM (can't remember exact number as I threw them out over a year ago) but I think it was around 400RPM or something.

I can't speak for their heatsinks, but their fans are utter shit, both in colour and sound. I'm surprised that only a few percentage of customer reviews mention this.

Case could be half the size with out altering components. One fan looks like shit up front, as does the second empty top fan slot. But at the same time with a 1070 being voltage limited and a ryzen hitting a wall at 4.0ghz you don't need better cooling because it's not going to get you better performance. It's practical I guess. Nice 4tb external, wish I had more storage like that. Btw treat yourself to even a cheap dac like the dragonfly black, it's night and day from the on board audio even on my high end asus board

It is fine. Intel CPUs run up to 100C, at which point they throttle. Nobody likes a throttling desktop but this shit is incredibly common in laptops, Intel CPUs run up to their thermal limits all the time. You probably won't be giving those away to your grandkids in 20 years, but something like 80C full load temp is absolutely nothing to worry about, the CPU will not be at full load most of the time and it should easily survive it's useful lifetime.
>>
>>60004504
It's only $130 and why are you gonna buy a 4 series in 2017
>>
>>60001202
Well ideally you'd want something with a proper APS-C sensor. Computer cases are have dark areas, which places demands on a camera's low-light performance, and brightly-lit areas, where the difference will place demands on a camera's dynamic range. Phone sensors are bad in both of these areas, because they're small. So you have to use flash to give them enough light, and direct flash is rarely a good look.

Point-n-shoot cameras are no better than phones, because they use the same tiny sensors. They just have cheap, crappy zoom lenses in front of them instead of the 28mm-equivalent prime on a phone. They might even be worse than a phone, since those lenses are often slower.

You're looking at something like $300 for a decent entry level camera that will give you nice pictures of a subject like this. You also want a tripod to sit it on, so you can take a longer exposure. SLR or mirrorless, take your pick. Go to /p/ and lurk in the gear thread. No, seriously, lurk in the gear thread, they do not like people making their own threads for this same question over and over.

Just ordered a new computer. It's being assembled. Here's a picture Puget Systems sent me (it's their Serenity Pro line).

And the part list - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jfhh8K (CPU will be overclocked to 4.8ghz)

Holy fucking shit you spent over a thousand dollars on SSD storage. You could have bought 8 500gb SATA SSDs for RAID0 and a 256gb nvme.

i have a 6600k 4.8ghz 980ti 1550mhz 16gb cl14 3600mhz with a single 500gb sata ssd and a 500gb hdd i pulled from a laptop

980ti does better than a stock 1080 in firestrike at 45-50c thanks to maxwell not having a locked down and encrypted bios. I only spent $330 on it
If you can legitimately afford a $1500 ssd cool but like I said you could have legitimately bought, what, 12 500gb SATA drives? Just feel like that's way too much money for storage unless you have a real fucking need for it like those guys that use them as scratch disks for video and etc
>>
>>60008291
9 SATA ssds (550mb/s) vs. the fastest NVME ssd (3500MB/s). Hmmm, tough choice.

The 1080 GTX is what I currently own, I plan on swapping it into my new PC. I lucked out and got a nearly silent 1080 GTX so I don't feel a need to upgrade to a much louder Ti.

what is your CPU that's kinda low
>>
>>60008459
If you only care about speed, sure. In this particular and ridiculous situation with 8 drives in raid 0 you would match the nvme in sequential read/write. Look here
>>60008454
if you have a legitimate use for the nvme it's all good but if you bought it for muh load screens that kinda sucks because you spent a ton of money on not much of anything
>>60008484
Um I think that's my 6600k at stock or a low oc like 4.5. don't remember
>>

>>60008454
yeah my 980ti is 1550 on core and 700 on mem
it does better than a 1080 in games
>>
>>60008471
Yeah but a stock 1080 runs much quieter. Even at load my case fans put out more noise. Not saying the 980Ti is a bad choice but noise levels matter to me after the PTSD my 480 GTX gave me.
>>
>>60008500
It's AIO cooled, thats why the OC is so high. I have a good air flow design in my case and so the pump is actually louder than any fan in the case. I wouldn't have paid the $330+shipping if it was air cooled.
>>
>>60008493
NVME, especially the Pro 960 has much, MUCH better latency.
>>
>>60008493
Also, that many ssds in RAID is going to require a beast of a RAID controller (further jacking up cost) and the lack of TRIM is going to cause their performance to degrade over time. The raid controller adds another hit to latency as well.
>>
>>60008601
I'm not arguing that the raid would be superior it's self but the much greater amount of storage combined with a reasonably sized nvme could have been had for the same price. The point would be that there are so many different possible storage configurations for a normal end user/vidya that it's pretty much impossible to justify that drive. If it was an educated purchase and the guy has a real need for a huge nvme drive, like he is a professional, which makes sense because he is using puget systems and had all that money, then good for him.

>Having someone build a computer for you

>>
>>60008641
In the end, none of us really *need* most of this fancy hardware. I already own a house and I make really decent money and have a lot in savings, so I splurged on my hobby. I'm excited to play with the performance of the 960 Pro. Every other part I was getting was top class so I decided not to hold back on the storage side. The initial cost hurts but I know in the long run I won't regret it. We all die eventually, it's sometimes good to be unpractical.
>>
>>60008808
Okay, as long as you had that mind set before throwing that pile of money at it and didn't fabricate it afterwards I withdraw all complaints. Enjoy.

ps. could have bought 6 580s

The Serenity series has them testing multiple of the same component and choosing the quietest and lowest temp component. That's especially important to me since I'm having them overclock it. Maybe I'm being sold a bag of goods but all the reviews of the Serenity line show they are SUPER quiet.
>>
>>60008852
Ok but why not do that yourself

>>60008848
Lel. It's all good, I can take the bantz. And your advice was really good especially if someone was on a tighter budget.

>>

Buy from silicon lottery?
There is less than a .8% difference in noise between components
>>
>>60009023
Citation please. I highly doubt this.
>>
>>60009023
That takes care of the processor. Then there's fans and coolers. And the custom-modified noise-reduction case with years of experience behind it. I'm not buying from CyberpowerPC here, I'm getting the Serenity Pro line. Shit's not easy to replicate on your own. silentpcreview tested a sandy bridge Serenity Pro at 11 dbA. That's quieter than your wife's farts.

The hardware discussion and banter that this thread generates seems to be the best on /g/ aside from the rare good technical CPU/GPU/etc thread. reddit certainly doesn't have anything even remotely similar because it's too slow and you can't say nigger.
Where do you guys go to talk about hardware? I enjoy it and could do it all day. Maybe an IRC that isn't dead?

While I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that he spent so much fucking money on that SSD you guys know damn well that a company bining parts for you is a top tier service. It's impossible for me but pretend for a second that a couple thousand dollar computer isn't a big purchase for you and can more or less be made on a whim. If what he says is true about the binning, combined with (hopefully) professional overclocking, and assembly then it really is a justifiable purchase for someone who places a very high value on their time(am NEET doesn't compute for me either) and the silence of the machine.
If I had half a mil in the bank or something I may very do the same thing and I am the biggest jew on the face of the planet when it comes to computer parts.
>>
>>60010432
My bad on the double post but I think he means that they test shit in a similar way to silicon lottery. So they buy, say, 100 RX480s and put aside the 5 best ones that can maintain stock speeds while undervolted. Apply the same to a CPU. It could of course be a gimmick, this is the first time I'm hearing about it, but I assure you they are not testing fucking fans.

This. It's Puget System's primier computer and the build that got them famous. You pay a premium for it but it's hard to duplicate yourself.

That used to be me. I'd spend months researching every component for price/value. I don't have that kind of time or inclination anymore, I'd rather just get the best and be done with it as long as the price isn't too outrageous. I don't buy a new computer every year I just use what I have until it starts to bottleneck and feel obsolete. I plan on using the computer for years without a major upgrade.
