Hey /g/ can any of you tell me what this battery is for in my desktop?

CR232, it keeps track of the CMOS settings (BIOS)
It's to keep the NSA transreceiver powered on day and night to collect private data from you even when you shut your pc off.
It keeps the RTC running. If it weren't for that, they would just save the BIOS settings in flash memory.

Most motherboards nowadays have a battery backup so you have time to save in event of power outage

If it dies your hard drives will be erased.
Also if you don't have power the PC can run off it for 5 minutes.

It's what keeps your game saves from being erased when you turn off your PC. Just like oldschool game cartridges. It only affects game data, anything else on your PC is completely unaffected if the battery dies.

RTC and CMOS are different things boi

Disregard all other posts, they're making shit up
there should not be a battery in your computer at all. Run.

OP RUN NOW

They keep the bios settings volatile incase you fuck something up and get a softbrick. Settings go back to factory when the battery is yanked.

that or they just can't be assed switching from SRAM to Flash
it's not like it'd be hard to make a jumper that tells the BIOS to ignore the contents of the Flash
