>Bitmovin will showcase the first ever AV1 Live Streaming demo, delivering 1080p playback at 1.5Mbps in broadcast quality, reducing storage and CDN costs by up to 10x, at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 24-27, 2017 (booth SU9007CM).
>As a member of the Alliance, Bitmovin will collaborate with industry leaders in pursuit of an open and royalty-free AOMedia Video codec, AV1. Bitmovin has actively worked in video and streaming standardization and has driven standards from inception to implementation. Bitmovin’s founders co-created the MPEG-DASH streaming standard used by Netflix, YouTube, and many others, and is responsible for over 50% of peak U.S. internet traffic.
Daily reminder that AV1 will crush HEVC and leave no survivors on the codec field. Vivat!
But is it going to look like dogshit, like youtube's """1080p"""?

Au contraire. That's the point of this Alliance. They're basically ramming all the newest ideas about encoding from various groups into one final royalty-free solution.
MPEG days are numbered.

To be fair it's mostly the uploader's fault for not uploading CRF 0 video. You can already get acceptable streaming quality at 1.5mbps 2-pass abr with 10-bit HEVC so AV1 already sounds DOA.

Well compression efficiency is the same as HEVC which is bad. Streaming sites will have little reason to switch over to AV1 especially when HW decoding support for VP9 has just begun
I give AV1 another decade before it's actually relevant.
