The only thing that will make me call a laptop "an absolutely beautiful piece of engineering" is an innovative and effective heat management system.

That's not innovative, it just denotes that the heat source has a low enough TDP that you can afford using passive cooling.

Every smartphone uses passive cooling, and nobody uses it as a selling point. Give me a desktop grade CPU or GPU in a laptop and keep it under 340K at maximum load without throttling, then we can talk.

The main thing g doesn't get is that apple hardware is mainly focused on design and luxury. They are going to be used to check emails and browse Tumblr on Starbucks so these computers don't need more powerful chips.

There's a difference between designed for pros and marketed at pros. Apple knows these aren't machines for professionals, it just doesn't care. Most "professional" work done on computers around the world can be done with just word and excel.

I dropped a kettle bell on my (open) X220t, amazingly the only damage was to the letter 'P' on the keyboard, which stopped working unless pressed really hard. It was a £40 part to replace and required the removal of one screw and the disconnection of one ribbon cable, giving me a beautiful new keyboard that's a joy to type on. I'll take the most shit hideous internals that are easy to work on any day over some glued in sleek bullshit, considering I don't look at the internals while using the machine.

Both RAM and WIFI have low rates of failure in computers due to low heat exposure, this is why they were soldered on in portable computers since like mid-80's, but if your CPU, south bridge or GPU fails, you're fucked, since Intel no more produces FCPGA chips for laptops, and never did it for ultraportable laptops.
Thinkpads are more customizeable not because they are intended to be disassembled and repaired every season like your old lada, but because different corporate customers prefer different cellular modems, wireless cards and affordable repairability on the go with a help of company's assigned pajeet monkeys that can slap a new motherboard in ms. Andreson's puter between changing ink in photocopiers.
Removable RAM is purely for manufacturing cost cuts.
Yet Macbooks don't fail this often, and there is not that much Thinkpad repair shops, because they are somewhat user-serviceable, you still might think that Macbooks are more faulty because they are being repaired on component level instead of tossing the whole machine to trash like it often happens with "modular" and cheap computers with low resale value.

+$70 for more RAM

Macs are the best laptops and if you disagree you are either a poorfag or a butmad shill.
