I just had Nougat pushed to my android, with its new settings

If you are using media, it adjust media volume. You can always use the right down arrow when you press the volume key to see every volume setting

Granted, but I have no reason to be constantly changing the ringer volume either. I'd much prefer to always adjust media with my buttons. Sometimes I want to reduce volume from 100% before I start playing something, y'know?

Irritating as hell that this feature that I consider vital was removed in this 'update'.

It literally requires no permissions.
It just tells the system API "Hey, I'm playing audio" without actually playing any audio, so the volume buttons always control media playback volume.
