The structure of a tastebud isn't that well known. They're highly complex chemical analyzers that are far beyond even current chemical analysis capability.
Same with smell.


Although with good research you could get a pretty good idea of how cats respond to different tastes with a well designed study. However, well designed studies are rarely reported on, since they're the least interesting.

I've heard this before, but of all cats i've had, at least 2 of them were really drawn to sweet flavours.

I applaud you for questioning and not taking things at face value, however the person you replied to wasn't the person who started the conversation (That was me). With that said this appears to be based on lack of theTas1r2 gene (one of the two genes that allows for sweet receptor), however they still have the gene for Tas1r3, which may explain why some people in this thread are saying cases in which would suggest otherwise. So most likely a better response would be generally cats are incapable of tasting sweet, but there is the possibility for a few to actually enjoy it. Either way I still think a meat based cake would make more sense to give to your feline friend, considering they most likely don't have the proper mechanisms to properly digest it.

No reason to, it was something I had heard and was parroting myself, so it was good to actually look into rather than accept it as fact.

From the article I read, they were thinking along the lines of Tas1r3 potentially being the cause for some anomalies. Though honestly I would want to research into it more to see what others have said and if I can get a more direct reference to the research rather than an article going over the findings (which in itself is problematic as we all know journalist like to sensationalize everything or misrepresent the research).
