Do these phones still have boards that completely kill over and become unbootable once the battery's completely drained?

1st and 2nd gen had the same problems. Even jumpstarting and replacing the battery wasn't the problem. The board was bricked and had to be sent back for an RMA since it wouldn't turn on even while plugged in without the battery. Was apparently a common problem in those models. I've never had a phone get bricked from a drained out battery until those 2.
