can we have a die shot thread?
>>59935535
we should a computer architecture thread
>>59935535
it's like tech porn....
>>59935601
Liking die shots of only one architecture is like liking pussy of only one color/lip tipe.
>>59935735
>>59935535
>>59935842
>>59935869
ohh yeah!!
>>59936053
Post Yonah
>>59935878
Classy.
>>59935869
but... is that a picture, or a schematic/drawing?
>>59935878
if nothing dies because of the shot, what's the purpose of it?
I guess.....
I got a few die shots saved, starting with Westmere.
>>59936481
Then Nehalem.
>>59936500
Westmere-EX (10 cores on a fuckhuge (513 mm2) die)
>>59936535
and to round it off, Nehalem-EX with 8 cores on a colossal 684 mm^2 die.
>>59935535
>mfw retards think it's viable to build their own processor with a soldering iron
>>59936560
If I wanted to build one with pieces I could handle with my hands. How much space would I need?
>>59936581
To make the bare minimum required for a fully fledged processor using single transistors you'd need an entire room and a couple kW of power, and you'd be lucky to get more than a couple hundred kilohertz out of it in clock speed.
>>59936581
It wouldn't work because the lengths of wire you would need would fuck up the timing (at "high" clock rates the speed of light starts to become a bottleneck in modern processors) and force you into a <100MHz clock.
>>59936606
>>59936622
Thanks, I kinda find hard to imagine how complex this things really are.
>>59935869
I made a dark version which I used for years as my desktop background.
>>59936622
I doubt its the speed of light causing a bottleneck. Don't you mean speed of electrons?
>>59936606
>>59936622
>>59936581
Don't listen to this retard, you could do it in less space than that. And if you're willing to use more advanced logic ICs you can get it down to the size of a microwave oven (http://www.homebrewcpu.com/)
>>59936839
>speed of electrons
Pham.............
>>59936858
>if you're willing to use backdoored shit that you're trying to avoid by making your own processor, you can build your processor out of the backdoored shit that you're trying to avoid!

This guy does a ton of really nice teardown and really detailed die shots
>>59936876
TTL chips with backdoors? How?
>>59936622
>>59936839
It's the speed of propagation of electrical potential in a conductor, which is a bit less than light but much, much faster than the actual electrons. In direct current, the current moves a lot faster than the electrons. Think of it as being similar to a pressure wave in air.

Thanks anon, this looks neat.
This thread turned out nicier than I thought it would.
thanks guys!!
