Probably for much the same reasons as people in other countries don't use it. They probably use it for much the same reasons as well.

There is, though, a monetary culture in the us though where you are 'supposed' to buy something and it's felt that you are not participating if you work outside of this profit model. This exists for transportation, health, computers. Everything. You're supposed to use the services or you are 'getting away with something' or anti-establishment. Everyone seems to know most of these systems are bogus. Like carrying 4000 pounds of steel with you just to buy some milk at the store and not walking or riding a bicycle.
