I find your post hard to believe as I just finished Ghost Recon Wildlands in 2K with the High preset. Freesync was on and never noticed it not running smoothly either

yeah im seeing a good performance boost using ubuntu 17.04 (which only supports the open source amdgpu, no amdgpu-pro support) on my rx 470. still, rocket league is being a little bitch as usual. xonotic plays nicely enough. the stuttering is a combination of my terrible fx-6300 and linux's poor performance lmao. also, dual card support is better than it used to be. ive got a vga monitor hooked to my r5 250x and a dvi monitor hooked to my rx470 and they JustWerk™©® together. so yes to answer your question most of the time the open source driver works better. phoronix does shitloads of benchmarks on this kinda thing so check that out for proof.
