So basically a repeat of Broadwell? Broadwell got two LGA1150 CPUs that nobody bought because they were slightly slower than Haswell refresh. They did run a lot cooler but desktop users don't care that much about that unless you're going over 120W TDP.

HOLY SHIT JUST BUY HARDWARE WHEN YOU NEED TO AND GET WHAT MATCHES YOUR NEEDS.

Intel/AMD/Nvidia whatever. Look at what you want to do. Either play a game, or make patterns in Excel.

Buy what does the job best at the time you need to buy and get what you can afford/fits your budget.

Welcome to /g/, where we make 30 threads a day about the same thing and circlejerk hate on Intel/AMD/Nvidia. Because clearly Intel/AMD/Nvidia is better guys.

Not sure what the problem is here.
My i5 3210m laptop from 2012 used to beat all of these low voltage processors up until recently.
This is just them pushing out yet another low power cpu.

Probably because that's the power consumption thing they can really improve nowadays and they're aiming for the mobile sector.
This low power thing is the trend, until they decide to finally stop milking people and switch away from silicon to something like GaAs.

Oh, come on now.

If you want to upgrade without buying a new mobo, Intel has never given you much time to do it.

Look at the timing on the sockets:

1156 (2009 and 2010)
1155 (2011 and 2012)
1150 (2013 and 2014)
1151 (2015 to 2018)
Icelake (2018 to ???)

So Intel graciously gives you about a 2-year window to keep your mobo before they make it obsolete. (The only reason the 1151 socket is going to last so long is because the transition to 10 nm is a real bitch, slowing the tick tock way down.)

>when does the x86 architecture patent expire?

Type "lscpu".

See that huge list of flags?

Those are all the features that Intel has incrementally added to their CPUs over the years.

Every feature is patented, and every feature has an installed code base that relies on its existence.

You can't compete against Intel by releasing a CPU that's missing the past 17 years worth of new features. If you want those features in your CPU, you have to license them from Intel. And Intel only allows one company to license those features: AMD. Intel allows AMD to sell x86 CPUs for only one reason: to serve as a defense against anti-trust prosecution. AMD is Intel's "monopoly shield", and Intel doesn't need any other company to fill that role -- so you're completely out of luck if you want to enter the x86 CPU market.

Yes, /g/entlemen, that's right -- AMD competes against Intel in the x86 CPU market ONLY because Intel authorizes them to do so. If it wasn't for anti-trust legislation, Intel would have bought AMD many years ago.

>>

>Intel allows AMD to sell x86 CPUs for only one reason: to serve as a defense against anti-trust prosecution.
Not exactly. AMD developed and owns the AMD64 extension to x86. AMD and Intel are in a mutually beneficial patent deal so that Intel can use the 64-bit extension and AMD can use the x86 base.
>>
>>59939640

The x64 cross license deal is still massively in Intel's favour. As far as I understand it it is "if AMD ever goes belly up Intel gets all rights fuck you" but if Intel imploded AMD doesn't inherently get any rights to x86.

Then again both VIA and (iirc) IBM still hold an x86 license.
>>
>>59939640
> Not exactly.
> AMD64 extension

If it wasn't for anti-trust legislation, Intel would have simply bought AMD to acquire its patent portfolio.

So, ultimately, AMD exists only because Intel allows it.

Not really. AMD is the last real competition to Intel in x86 space, so Intel would have to license it to whatever competitor comes up or face the wrath of an antitrust lawsuit that they lose by default.
If no competitor comes up, the government steps in and splits Intel in a big divestiture, not unlike what happened to AT&T back in the 80s.

But i5s were shitty for at least 2 years, very obviously, but shills on here kept pushing them.
It was apparent in frametime graphs 2 or 3 years ago that they were a stuttering mess on so many games coming out and that average FPS was a shitty measurement.

Sure Bulldozer was worse, but shilling a bad chip because it kind of fits someone's budget was never a good idea. That's the reason Intel didn't need to improve their SKUs more so than a lack of competition, that fucktards would overpay for them anyway.
>>
>>59940192
They actually did :^)
Just like Intel did with Netburst, Westmere and Sandy Bridge.
>>

You're implying AMD would have tried to make that same ballsy move.

Intel might be a Jewish company, but at least it's taking the right step by coming up with a new technology (10nm is actually smaller than some atoms) that will make it the king of innovation as well as processing power.

If Intel ever hires anybody who comes up with a superconductor that works at room temperature, it's going to own the market even harder than it did before Ryzen. It's the reason why Intel isn't really worried about Ryzen--if Cannon Lake is a success, Intel is basically set for life.

Do you hear yourself? Ryzen slams anything intel has to offer when it comes to video work. It's also the better choice for 3d modeling. And if you're programming games, you don't need anything more than a 486 and vim to write code so comparing performance of modern cpus is idiotic.

No it doesn't. If you consider yourself a professional and need to edit videos, you can afford a 6950x which amd has no chance against. And if you want to game, good luck with your indian piece of shit against a 7700k lul

Yeah, just like that will cut the pricing of their $1100 6900K, to compete with a $330 1700 which is currently on par or beats it.

>>59942238
Could be a combination of mobo BIOS and fab improvements.

Actually I'd bet its more due to the motherboard BIOS, some boards really go fucking overkill on the LLC shitting up voltages to insane levels.

Well I guess for comparisons you can run some tests 4 times slower if you want..

Here's a ST only test though, the guy who does this doesn't even have a 7700k, he sells server hardware.

You can actually see a AWS server and Xeon Phi in comparisons in some tests

>Actually I'd bet its more due to the motherboard BIOS, some boards really go fucking overkill on the LLC shitting up voltages to insane levels.
Yep.
BIOS updates have allowed people to drop voltage like 0.05v or so.
So instead of 4.1ghz at 1.4v people are getting that are 1.35v much more commonly.
So you can up it to even higher clocks on 1.4v again instead.
>>
>>59942461
What kind of clock is "4.10.1" ? It's the kernel version.

https://www.servethehome.com/amd-ryzen-7-1800x-linux-benchmarks-paying-for-speed/

>For our Ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 4.10.1 benchmarks we standardized on a very simple platform.

It's also on a $90 motherboard, people seem to love these B350 ones.
>>
>>59942404
Does LLC vary by mobo or is it a CPU thing?
>>
>>59942461
>Intelshills are this stupid
>>
>>59942552
Mobo, some are fine after OCing on any LLC, some are complete messes at the first 2 levels, some actually are reversed, so LLC1 is lower voltage than LLC5

New platforms really need some documentation, that's why I'll bide my time with this 3570k until Zen+

You can always get a cheapo 6 or 4 core, the AM4 socket will last you both zen1 to zen+++ in 2019/20

yeah I was planning on buying 1500x anyway since I'm poor, but I also can't afford upgrading every year or 2.

>>
>>59943784

Save up for the $219 for the 1600. Use stock cooler and get one of the cheaper boards. Upgrade to zen++ in 2019.
>>
>>59944126
>>59943840
Is it really that much better? I don't think I'm gonna be using those 2/4 more cores/threads that much, but it's not that much expensive so if it's worth it I might pick it. Still would rather save as much as possible and when I saw the price for i5 build I just wanted to kill myself. That was before I knew about ryzen good thing I waited.
>>
>>59944198
Yes, it's fucking 6/12 for $219. No better value exists.
