What's the best free anti-virus out there?
The only anti-virus I used before was AVG and it was a piece of shit. intrusive, performance heavy and generally annoying.

Clonezilla. Take a clean image, burn it to DVDs or stick on an external drive. If you get a virus that AV can't get rid of, you wipe computer and recast the image. It literally takes 30 minutes and you're back to normal.

I've read Avast is good.

Windows 10 already has Windows Defender.
I bet you also use Daemon Tools.
Avast in silent mode.

this. you can't avoid malware on the modern web.

Common Sense with an occasional Malwarebytes scan. If you really need an AV you should just use Windows Defender + Malwarebytes.

I use malware bytes, but I just want to feel more tranquil when browsing, etc. I don't download virus ridden keygens, etc, but sometimes I may browse a website or two that give me some virus.

Windows Defender is notorious for letting things through. You need a Plan B if you can't be trusted to play it safe.

can't do that, my man.
>>59926215
This is not how it works. You are the first line of defence. If you let something through, you are pretty much fucked no matter what placebo software you are running.

I mean for quarantining and removal of viruses and malware.

avira or avast

Avast let some chink malware on my machine and didn't even squeak about it despite at least one weekly full scan since infection. So fuck avast.
I haven't tried any other AV yet though, but I'll probably go with Avira. I wish Matousec still had up to date AV and firewall tests.
(If anyone cares about the long story, I always browse in full paranoid mode with uBlock and uMatrix and I haven't even visited that site directly, all I did was get and image link for it from google images once. Pretty fucking scary that it managed to sneak through, and then I had it sitting there for over 2 weeks because I never have a reason to open Explorer and go into Network Neighborhood normally.)

I have had pretty good luck with Avast for about 7 years now, but the ultimate anti-virus is don't be a dumb dickhead.
I'd say avast
Windows Defender + MalwareBytes
