Its a comparison of very low quality low res image between Jinc and NGU Sharp? I dont know how valid it is or if it even real to begin with but NGU Sharp looks best with high quality sources. For low quality sources NGU AA is miles better. Ive done countless comparisons with different content myself and i have no doubts about NGU's strength.

>Jinc is not a typical resampling kernel by itself; it is a function,
similar to Sinc, but for use with cylindrical filtering operations.
mpv uses Jinc as the weighting function for EWA resampling. The ewa_* and
haasnsoft scalers are the results of using that weighting function with
different windowing functions.

Lanczos is Sinc-windowed Sinc, and as the EWA “equivalent” of Sinc is Jinc,
EWA Lanczos is Jinc-windowed Jinc.

mpv uses libavcodec to decode video, the same as VLC and every other open source media player. mpv cares a bit more about correct and high-quality video rendering than VLC, but it doesn't have a graphical user interface, which may or may not be a downside to you. I think the lack of a GUI is the biggest reason for all the mixed opinions in these threads. A lot of people here are used to GUI software (especially the Windows users,) so it's a bit of a sour-grapes thing.

Honestly, out of all the modern open source video players, mpv is the most interesting one to watch right now, since it has active development that is focused on improving video quality on PC. VLC development is mostly focused on the Android and UWP ports, and MPC-HC development is stagnant. Unfortunately (or not, depending on how you look at it,) the lack of a GUI means that mpv will always be niche software and it will never overtake VLC or MPC-HC in popularity.

ngu is optimized for real world material, not for computer type test patterns. it's still quite interesting to test ngu with such test patterns, because it can show potential weaknesses of the algorithm, but what ultimately counts is real world material, not test patterns.

Depends on resolutions and FPS of the videos. I have RX470 with 1080p monitor and can max madVR for any content except some 60FPS ones.
>>
>>59950614
totally depends on resolution and frame rate. also, highest settings aren't really needed, unless you absolutely require the last 1% quality. ngu "very high" costs about 3x as much performance as "high", while only looking marginally better. if you can live with "high" quality, an nvidia 1050 can do ngu 1080p -> 4k upscaling without breaking a sweat.

if you insist on using "very high" quality for 1080p -> 4k upscaling. or if you want to upscale 1080p 60fps movies to 4k, then you may need a 1080.

if your tv is only 1080p, then probably a 1050 can do anything you want.

Haha try again. Hw Dec in windows is unbeatable by any other OS. Hence Windows is the best platform to watch videos if you want accuracy and quality

It's time to update/fork this old thing with adaptive-sharpen and ssimsuperres and why not the oil painting filters from madVR.

Oh really? Name a better native hardware decoder than dx12. Didn't think so, fuck off with your opengl
>>
>>59957308
I just meant that Win 10 is trash. Use win 8.1 or 7. Also you better not use HW decoder if you can.

Ha! Ha!

Enjoy using an Erdogan like technology.
>>
>>59957546
Why don't you put xp in the mix too. Since everybody said xp was better than 7. Wake up, technology gets better with time. Only socialists and tinfoil class feel useful talking about privacy "issues"
>>
>>59957503
OpenGL 4.5+ is currently better than DX12 even on Windows!

>>59957698
People always have a lot of issues with media playback and other things on Win 10. Its like... alpha OS. Youre the tester!

using kcp. how to update madvr? do i just replace files?
>>
>>59958378
Find madVR folder and run uninstall.bat. Then remove madVR folder. Put updated folder and run install.bat. Select madVR as video renderer in mpc-hc.

I tried to make a screenshotcomparison link for this but it didn't work; what do I need to do to fix mpv from displaying incorrect fonts? This is my setup from Windows
>>

mpv-shot0001.jpg

And this is with mpv. It's not just this file, either, I don't know if it's breaking the typesetting or what. Even a completely stock MPC-HC install will display them normally with zero configuration.
>>
>>59958934
mpv and vlc uses libass for subtitle rendering, mpc-hc uses vsfilter.
>>
>>59959003
>mpc-hc uses vsfilter
No its not.
>>

The really weird thing is that on screenshotcomparison both subtitles look exactly the same, regardless of the file. Yet when I'm watching the video or looking at the screenshot locally the mpv one looks like shit. What's the cause?
>>
>>59957954
when he first released ngu, he said most studios would downscale in gamma light, so he had optimized ngu for that. but now with the latest madvr build he says he's been told that some studios use linear light downscaling, after all, so he changed ngu again to account for that.
>>
>>59959029
Right totally forget about mpc's own sucky subtitle renderer. That would explain wrong rendering
>>
>>59959190
Why do you assume that it is mpc's issue and not mpv's?
>>
How do I make MPV pick up subs from subfolders?
>>
>>59959214
Because animu subtitlers use vsfilter or xy-vsfilter. Do you comparisons with that.
>>
>>59959252
I dont understand what you mean. What animu subtitlers?
>>
>>59959274
People that create subtitles with retarded effects.
Libass, the library (for dev) that is used in mpv to render subtitles is currently the only maintained subtitles renderer.
>>
>>59960562
But vsfilter and xy-vsfilter are not used for that.
>Libass, the library (for dev) that is used in mpv to render subtitles is currently the only maintained subtitles renderer.
Good but what is there to maintain? xysubfilterbeta, for example, is pretty much perfect so nothing happens to it for like a year already.
>>
>>59960728
Supporting retarded things and so on.
Xysubfilter works but is full of unsolved bugs.

So what's the fix? I can't imagine everyone who uses mpv mainly to watch anime just accepts that they're doomed to only ever have shit subtitles.
>>
>>59961152
There is no fix, it's freetard software which means it's unusable garbage for anyone with standards.

Just bought a 4k tv(Sony XBR43X800D)

I got a HTPC with a RX 460 4GB passively cooled and a Pentium haswell with ubuntu installed.

How do I configure it to scale my anime collection correctly to 4k, is opengl-hq enough?

I agree. MadVR is useless. Can't even see a real-life difference.
>>
>>59965025
the real life difference comes when you upscale stuff (and by more than 10%), or when you use extra features like debanding, or deringing, or sharpening, or smooth motion frc, or hdr -> sdr conversion.
