I found that this brand makes a very serious product. I like these watches, and for somebody who wants to start, I think this will be a good [choice]: not too expensive and good value for money.”

Seriously, why do decent automatics cost $300+? The movements aren't that expensive and the cases are cheap to manufacture.

Part of the reason nobody wears decent watches now is the fucking price.

Go to the Orient site snd look through their whole offerings. If you find a model you like, buy it from a retailer like Long Island Watch because it's much cheaper.

/wt/, we should make the ultimate AC3 video.

Let's post him a review request with a pic of absolute shitters and bait keywords like "workhorse movement" "affordable" "beater" "mid-tier" etc. plus shitting on Patek and stuff like that.
>>
>>59921428
Externally mine is just a bit beat but not much (the japs really like to do very sharp pics of the watches they sell with all the scratches and dents amplified), and the lume has aged, but the dial and movement are actually spotless. If it wasn't a battery watch I'd say it has never been opened before. Whoever the previous owner brought it to for a battery change could swap it without leaving a mark anywhere.

I'll fix up the polished parts with some polishing cloth by hand, leave the brushed parts alone and maybe do something about the crystal and that's about it. I'm not even sure I'll relume the hands or just clean the top off.

When you say "big boy" we assume you mean not dogshit quartz fashion watches. Those two brands are as big boy as you can get with their higher level offerings like Credor or Royal Orient. If you can afford them, of course.

>>59921413
That's a weird bracelet, I assume he worked for that company and they gave it as a gift? The dial doesn't say anything, I don't really know anything about it. Are there any numbers on the back maybe? If not then opening it up is the only way to figure out what it is.

>>59921925
This decision was made for exactly the same reasons as the invention of Acura, Lexus and Infinity. Because Western markets are unable to wrap their minds around companies serving entry level and luxury markets simultaneously. It wasn't made before because, until recently, Seiko gave very close to zero fucks about international sales of their GS models.

Grand Seikos always had "Grand Seiko" on them too.
All they did is omit the generic logo, and the result is a much cleaner look.
Not only cleaner, but without the stupid redundancy too.

>SEIKO
>Grand Seiko

It was just dumb.

Of course improved aesthetics enhance marketing, but to say this was "necessary as a marketing decision" after half a century is bs.

Oh, and Grand Seikos have been marketed globally since 2010.

Of Grand Seiko perhaps, but not against the history and tradition of Seiko itself.

Before Grand Seiko there was "Seiko Crown", see pic.

This had pretty much the same basic layout as the new 2017 "Grand Seiko" branding: a two-word brand (one word being Seiko) in a distinctive font at the 12 o'clock, and some identifying info at the 6 o'clock.

I understand you prefer the new look aesthetically, and think most people will. I don't even disagree with you about that.

I still believe that Seiko choose to do this for exactly the same reasons Japanese carmakers did the same thing, and I think this is evidenced by it happening just as Seiko has begun to take the global marketing of Grand Seiko seriously in a way they really did not previously.

I'm general, I believe Seiko's emphasis on the global marketing of the Presage line and their renewed focus on globally marketing Grand Seiko are progressive moves form a company that has traditionally been VERY insular and JDM focused with it's mechanical models.

My disagreement is only about what motivated Seiko to take this step.

Vintage Japanese watches are all-steel most of the time. Use polishing cloth like Cape Cod for polished surfaces and a finer sanding sponge for brushed. Light pressure, and only a little.

For plated watches there are companies who do watch case replating.

Got this looking like it had been dragged through gravel, luckily a new crystal does wonders.
>>
>>59924134
Just remember, even if you're doing it by hand and not by a dremel you have to know measure and not go overboard or you'll destroy the edges. You'll probably have to settle for the deepest scratches and dents to remain, but you will get rid of all the haze caused by all the hairline scratches.

Even easier to go overboard with is re-brushing, and if you deviate by just 1° with your strokes it'll look like shit. I recommend practicing on a junker, steel-cased shitter, or a bracelet.
>>
>>59923944
Well the price is kinda steep, but Jap Ebay sellers always do insane sharp macro shots, the ones I got look way better irl than on the pic. Also reading the caseback that watch is plated and not all-steel. So not even the plating has worn off.

How come Japanese take so good care of their watches? Slavs and whites absolutely destroy them.

>>
>>59924551
Had it serviced immediately because when I got it the weight made some disgusting grinding sound.

Currently runs about a minute slow a day, but thats because I've been too lazy to go in and properly calibrate it. It's very consistently 1 minute slow, so once I get it dialed in I expect great things.

Whoever serviced the watch should have adjusted and regulated it when they did. I'd be annoyed if I got a watch back from service running a minute slow.

Seiko bought the small, high end Swiss watch company called Jean Lassale, founded in 1976 and specializing in ultra thin watches of about 3mm, with the world’s thinnest mechanical movements of only 1.2mm thick. However, Seiko did not acquire the rights to the original Lassale mechanical movements. Those ended up with the company who made the movements for Lassale, who now licensed them instead to Piaget.

Seiko fitted Jean Lassale’s with their own quartz movements already developed in 1977-1979 for their Credor line .

According to my reading of Seiko’s own “journey in time” they say Lassale was introduced in 1985 but my watch shows it was actually was bought out in 1981.

They were priced at about double the regular Seiko line at $375-$595, and carried a large profit margin for the company. Seiko would produce this new line entirely in Japan. Instead of the expensive hand-finished, jewelry-grade cases of Jean Lassale, this new line would use the cheaper plated base metal cases as on mine and mass-production techniques of regular Seikos, but they would be fitted with Seiko’s best movements, considered close rivals in quality to the Swiss.

They directed their designers to emulate the original Jean Lassale styles, and the line was launched, using the Seiko Quartz movements already developed in 1977-1979 for their successful Credor luxury line sold in Japan. With most cases measuring only 3-4mm (my one is approx 4mm in depth)

After a disappointing launch, Seiko tried unsuccessfully to position Lassale as a separate, more distinct brand from Seiko. They greatly expanded the range of styles in 1991, offering diamonds, faceted crystals, and even a line of solid gold cases with stainless steel backs. However, in a step backwards, they also retired their original assortment of higher-quality movements in favor of a small number of newer, thicker, jewel-less movements that were cheaper to make.

Hey /wt/ been looking into moonphase watches. While I prefer mechanical watches it occurred to me that unless I wound it everyday, I would have to set the moonphase every time I wanted to wear it. Which would be a pain in the ass as setting a moonphase seems to be tricky unless it is set the day of a full moon. And I would not be content wearing it with the moonphase wrong.

Should I just get a quartz moonphase?
>>
>>59926355
This kind of stupid question is going to haunt you forever if you keep up with this watch faggotry. You'll work out a '''''solution''''' to the moonphase fuckery and then move onto some other stupid thing
>hurr should I buy a NOS valjoux chrono it's only going to cost as much as the value of the entire watch to get it serviced but it's so pristine and it even has the original retail tags on it
>durr durr is this hi-beat zenith a good investment? I bet zeniths are totally undervalued right now, maybe I can sell it in a few years and pick up an a nice secondhand lange
>durr hurr would it be worthwhile to get the oil filled sinn? I need something I can wear while doing my ultimate fighting hobby, and I'm too stupid to take my watch off before beating someone's face in, let me agonize over this for months when I could spend time learning a new programming language and actually help my career
Just get the fuck out when you still can, the answer is quartz

I think there's legit spaceviews which were made without a dial originally to show off the movement as display models. Those are rarer, but there are also others that were made as regular watches with a dial but then converted to display models because the display models were so popular. That's why there are so many different variants that sell for different prices.

alternately you can leave your watch on leather, and dress it down by wearing birkenstocks instead of respectable shoes

So you want this? Seiko SARB035 is like $300, similar Seiko 5 models are around $100, Orient would be like $100-200 probably, lots of Swatch stuff like Tissot and Hamilton would probably be around $300-500. There's plenty of watches that fit your bill.

>>59923376
do you know what the preferred type of oil is?
>>

I like. Would prefer to stick to the cheaper stuff though like those Seiko 5s you mentioned. I like the ones that start with "SNK" usually blue or white dial.

I'd never buy one though cause I'm an in house snobby cunter

As am I.

But there's something to be said for the fact that you can get a watch serviced very quickly and cheaply, and pretty much anywhere you go in the world because the movement is so ubiquitous.

I feel good about it because I did it instead of buying a fake Rolex.

He's not rich. He's in debt by many tens of thousands. He makes $24k a year off YouTube ad revenue and not sure how much via donations/reviews/ad space.

Can't say much for his life, but his advice in terms of resale value is spot on
>>
>>59939699
This.
And the recent youtube ads update will reduce his revenue by like 30-40%. He also ran out of decent ideas like 2 years ago, so now his content is like 80% filler shit. His free divorce rent arrangement will expire by 2020, so he's fucking screwed.

i got a wehrle three-in-one and i have been trying to figure out how to get sufficient access to the movement to clean and lubricate it.

i've got the balance ticking in beat now, but the amplitude still goes up and down a bit. the 'repeat' alarm mode is also nonfunctional although the normal alarm mode where it drains the spring completely in one go is working fine, as is the strikework.
>>
>>59942065

this is typical of russian products. they tell you to buy a m91/30 because they are cheap, and before you know it you've got a rack full of m38s and m44s and 91/30 snipers.

great tool watches, but their lower end stuff (556, etc) actually lacks a lot of their premium features, meaning they're not worth buying into at the low end. Try Damasko if you're into that.

some have atomic radio sync.

water resistance trades off with small size. if you want a very small watch, you will have to give up some water resistance. likewise, if you want a very water-resistant watch, you will have to accept a larger size.
