But still downloads them.....10.000 times over.
With enough people we could break the ad networks simply by requesting too many ads.

I don't get why we moved away from those google text ads. They fit into every website really well and it felt less obtrusive than all these giant video ads wasting space and time meanwhile there's only one link. Maybe they should've added a thumbnail to the text ad but that's about it.

The fact that majority of sites have no idea which ads flow through their site, just that they're from an ad network is pretty fucking horrendous. Global consumer protection agencies need to halt this shit immediately. iirc NYTimes website still is pushing malware through their ad networks.

I installed Windows 7 on my uncle's pc. He clicked something and the pc was filled with malware and viruses. Then i installed 8.1, same thing plus he was complaining about how confusing the start screen was. THEN I installed 10 and he managed to do the same thing in the very first day.

And I also tried installing Mint and Ubuntu on his pc so he could stop fucking up, but he found it too confusing and complained about how he couldn't run his Windows programs.

I'm planning to, but the problem is now my uncle (for some retarded reason), install every single web browser out there, and uses all of them, even internet explorer. Now, if there's an adblocker that can work separated from web browsers, that would be nice (maybe there is, but i've been too lazy to search for it).

There's also this retarded reaction of his (and I assume this also happens with normies) where they download programs from any shaddy website, and they don't even care to read the checkboxes or buttons on the setup and end installing malware anyways.

You aren't doing your job as an actual tech literate person.
You're supposed to be setting up their system so that they actually have to try their hardest to fuck shit up. This means auto-updates for browser and OS. This means installing adblockers into every browser on their system. This means creating a separate account for them with less system privileges so they can't install BigBustyBabesOnline. And then you can go the extra mile for maintenance tasks, setting up auto backup and what have you.

It's much worse when you have family members who believe they're tech literate and refuse to change their shitty ways. Now that shit is agonizing.

>>59920095
> Not to mention that websites have no control over the ads shown since they are served through an ad network

Just a tip to any of you who are actually running some website.. try to sell advertisements directly. I know, it's really hard but if you have some special interesting topic then you may actually get some who are just out to put advertisements on the topic you're audience is into.

Advertisement network lack of control goes both ways, advertisers don't really know what kind of placement and traffic they are getting.

>>59920295
>It's funny because I recall clicking more text ads because they seemed less overt and in your face about it all
But you're here on /g/. A whole lot of "normal" people, specially now with mobile phones and tablets, will click those full screen ads links when trying to close them. If you're charging per click then this makes total sense. For those showing the advertisements... not so much.
>>
>>59920441
I figured this shit out when I was 13, your uncle is just retarded. Only way to stop him would be setting up a restricted account where he can't install new software or use I.E. Then blacklist all adservers via hosts file. Make sure to install ublock on every browser.
>>
>>59920735

>>
>>59920769
>Just a tip to any of you who are actually running some website.. try to sell advertisements directly. I know, it's really hard
Actually it's not that difficult, and selling advertisements isn't the only method. Using a combination of methods on top of 'direct' advertisements (that you can control explicitly), is absolutely the right path. Other methods to use in combination include accepting donations (incl bitcoin), having a subscription service, having a patreon, etc. This of course assumes you aren't running something like an ecommerce website in which you should be making enough from the services/products to cover server costs already.

If it was impossible to make money from the Internet, we wouldn't need Adblock because greed wouldn't be an issue.

>From a pure UX point of view, there is no justification whatsoever for having ads at all

>Ad blockers are an attempt by the user to improve their user experience, by filtering out the elements which they don't want so they can focus on those elements which they do want.

>>
>>59920375
I remember the web of the late 90's pretty well. Hell, I even bought ad space on a couple sites for a shareware app of mine.

Aside from the JavaScript popup dialog issue on less reputable sites, ads worked pretty much the way he described.

* Banner top, bottom, sometimes middle.
* 1-3 ad blocks in side bar.
* Animations were limited to gifs.
* There were limits on image size because website owners didn't want you fucking up end user's limited bandwidth.
* You dealt with the web site owner directly.
* You weren't tracked.
* Ads fit the site so if you're at a game site you will naturally see ads for games you might want.

If it had stayed like this I would have never thought of installing an ad blocker.

While I'm at it: the advertising I bought worked. It was worth my time and money and generated sales. Why? Because it wasn't annoying as fuck, and the people visiting those sites were likely candidates for my product.

>I don't know where you were surfing in the 90s, but I remember doubleclick ads being everywhere quite early.
I would say the majority of ads were not from a network.

>>You weren't tracked.
>That's very funny. Even IE3 supported blocking cookies for this exact reason.
Did some tracking exist? Yes. Was it at this level? No, not even close.

Except they also use loud auto start videos and popups that cover the entire screen.

What?

either I avoid the website or start to use umatrix instead of ublock. Technically speaking umatrix is better than ublock except for the fact that you need to maintain the websites yourself

Not everything has to be done to make money.

What are you talking about, goy? You must be one of those evil communists who pretend to do things for your community. That leads to racism, you know. You wouldn't want to kill another 6 millions.
>>
>>59919875
Already killed Adblock.
Ublock can block the script that does that, so never.

replying to your image, not you:

We did grace you with our view. You stream on twitch because you have a desire to share what you're saying/doing/playing with other people and this satisfies that desire. You have a passion for doing it, and by watching, I am letting you live your dream of having your content reach people all around the world.

If that's not why you make videos, or you're only in it for the money, you should fuck right off because we don't want to watch your shilling and begging anyway. I like to watch enthusiasts sperg about what they like, not entitled manchildren who think they should become millionaires because they sit in their underwear all day and film themselves playing videogames. I'll move on to someone who either doesn't monetize or doesn't bitch about it when I evade. You should consider yourself lucky I even put in the effort to wade through the fucking obstacle course of intrusive and malicious garbage on the way to your video anyway. You can thank me later.
>>
Never, you don't allow me in your page then I go away, fuck you. Simple as that, if everyone does then they'll stop those kind of restrictions.

This my current relationship with Forbes

so my ad block doesn't work on youtube anymore. i figured it was matter of time before chrome killed that shit.
>>
>>59920136
This one actually deletes the page content and only keeps the warning when it detects adblock, only way around is to disable js completely and only then delete the overlay element

Those fuckers are getting smarter

https://github.com/liltinkerer/detect-and-kill-adblock/blob/master/detect_adblock.js

good luck killing this. you can generate it on the fly, so fucking with variables wont help you.

the only solution is to disable js but you can also get around of that if you want.

gorhill is not going to inspect every single site and how they improve it. maybe block few biggers sites, the rest gets anti adblocked.

this is the future boys, thanks to faggots who pressed the adblock to masses.
>>
>>59928742
>>59928642

yeah, ad networks and site owners are just lazy to implement those things, but it has started already.

it's impossible to fight against it, at least with the current technology.
>>
>>59928527
Pretty cool, but he's not going to give a fuck what some leech thinks of him and your empty threat of moving somewhere else doesn't matter at all since your adblocked view never had any tangible value in the first place. You're probably one of those faggots who also delude themselves into justifying piracy with some moral high ground bullshit. Just admit you can't be bothered with the ads. nobody here's going to judge you for it

>(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((we))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

He reached one less person because of his childish beggar's tantrum. If that doesn't matter to him, he isn't passionate about what he does, so I shouldn't watch. The greedier he gets, the more people (even those who sit through the ads right now) will just move on to someone that will shut the fuck up and share what they want to without the money-making scheme. Or at least I like to think/hope so. If not, it doesn't matter. The internet is full of options. I'll never run out of actual enthusiasts to watch so I can easily afford to avoid leeches like this shithead and move to another channel.

Here's some good ones that are still updated

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt (last updated april 13)
https://hosts-file.net/download/hosts.txt (last updated april 17)
http://www.malwaredomainlist.com/hostslist/hosts.txt (last updated march 20)

If you use ublock, you can click on options and then 3rd-party filters and you will see many lists. The ones I included in this post are MVPS hosts, hpHosts and Malware Domain List.

Also if you use windows, there's a program called HostsMan that updates your hosts file automatically with your desired lists. For linux there's a similar one called Hostsblock.

Is Pi Hole any good? Having a network wide adblocker would be nice, but I'm worried it's just gonna break websites or throw <pic related> where the ads were
