It'd be among the least cost-effective actions on their part, especially over something with as little income as North Korea. They'd probably get super pissed and pull some plenty of relational strings to get back at us, but a military intervention would be ridiculous.

Agreed. CN keeps NK as a barking dog near their door steps but would never let it in.
China's problems are massive corruption that permeates the country to the core and goes all the way up. The massive building projects were all financed by massive loans and it is unclear how many are rotten. And they haven't gotten the bubbles under control: just look at the new annex to Beijing where property prices are going through the roof and happy days are here again for concrete and rebar.

They are trying to gain high tech know-how by any means, espionage and acquisitions. Their bid for the semiconductor part of Toshiba (27 gigabucks) tells you they are desperate and importantly unable to generate this know how by own research and development.

Cyberpunk arose in the 1980's in the tension between US and UK in post industrial meltdown on one side and an seemingly unstoppable Japan Inc. on the other. Why else did you think Japanese zaibatsu figured so prominently?

Today we have a US and UK still in the throes of a soon 10 year old financial crisis on one side and a very confident China on the other who builds and annects reefs in the South China Seas making demands close to the shores of Brunei.

The more thinks change the more they stay the same.
