I googled "Is google a botnet?" Then my browser crashed. Should I have used firefox instead?
>>
I'm interested in poking around Freenet, just out of curiosity.

Is there anyway to camouflage your ip? Would turning on the VPN have any effect?
>>
>>59899797
Alwys use firefox. Also, be sure to remove anything related to jewgle and use another browser. They track everything you do. Which should be obvious to anyone.

I fear your safety if you are able to ask something like that.
VPNs encrypt data. You connect the dots. Just know not all VPNs are good, some work better than others, so on and so forth.
As far as camouflaging your IP. Start digging.

My CPU cooler makes this noise while under heavy load. It's a water cooler (Silverstone TD03). It doesn't make it all the time, it just makes that screeching sound every few seconds while under load. Is it the fan? Or did air get into the loop and that noise is air bubbles going through the CPU block?

HDMI. Why would that be notable?

yes

there are some paid vpn providers that give you limited free vpn per month or so and if you use below this limit then they are fine

obviously not fine for youtube or torrent or shit like that

HDMI is a digital cable so if there's a fault in the cable then you would probably get nothing so this color shifty thing is either the GPU fucking up or the driver. probably the GPU.

>there are some paid vpn providers that give you limited free vpn per month

And I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them. People put way too much faith in VPNs. Just because they give you a way to hand them money doesn't make them magical guardians of security.

I just updated newpipe, now videos aren't full screen by default anymore.
Why is it so damn hard for people make software for phones?
Is there any situation where anyone would ever want to watch a video in portrait mode?
I can understand why you would implement it as a programmer, but why would anyone ever use it?
And if there is one person in the entire world that watches video like that, why not make a setting for that freak?
So many idiotic programmers rely on automatic rotation, it doesn't make sense.

When making .BAT scripts, is it enough to write the file name (e.g. readme.txt) if I want to open a file using the script? or is there a command to use before the file name?
>>
>>59901049
if you want the file to be opened with the default program then the filename on its own is fine.
otherwise you'll have to specify which program to open it like
notepad test.txt

if notepad is not the default application but you want to open it in notepad anyway.

I had. That was indeed set to qwerty. Set to dvorak and it's working as intended in that regard.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

In doing this, I found that my issue still stood due to a detail I forgot: My Japanese IME layout is set to dvorak via a registry edit; works fine except in the windows mentioned.

Played around in Control Panel and just discovered layout is fine when typing Japanese in the misbehaving windows but when IME is toggled to typing alphabet the layout is qwerty.
Guess this is due to Control Panel and Edge windows reading the selected input method (I had it on US/qwerty) for English displays; the JP IME being strictly for Japanese input.* Pretty annoying.

This mystery had bothered me for months and I'm happy to have figured it out. Thanks a lot, anon.

* I use the JP IME for general typing (including alphabet); US is so the layouts can be effortlessly toggled since I share my PC sometimes.

you've messed up your brackets.
you need to enclose the function in brackets to execute it immediately.

function() { ... }()

will not work, hence the extra brackets

(function() { ... })()
;

the last two () will execute it.

because it implies a named function and requires a name, where when enclosing it with ( ) it's seen as an expression.
you can do it like
!function() { ... }();

too to enforce it being parsed as expression, but I haven't seen those being used often or even at all.

Is there a universal way languages that don't have pointers deal with variables in mutlithreaded/multiprocessed programs?
One of my biggest problems with trying to do parallel programming in languages other than C is that I never know what variables are pointing where or how to set things to point to the same structure.

Just because a language says it doesn't have pointers, doesn't mean it doesn't.

In Java all objects are actually just references. They're pointers except you can't/have no reason to do arithmetic.

void bestgirls(string n, list * x){x.append(n);};
...
list harem = new list();
string bestgirl = "megumi";
bestgirls(megumi, *harem);

in C i'd know this changes harem so that it now includes megumi. in java doing this would create a copy of list, append to that list, then remove the list. so harem would be unchanged.

So I'm doing a bachelors project in theoretical chemistry where I develop a series of basis set for electronic structure calculations optimized for the fermi contact contribution to the hyperfine coupling constant.

Long story short, I have file containing numbers like so:

42
43

and another file containing a long list of numbers. I would like to use sed and bc to get the fraction of two numbers corresponding to line numbers from the long file with line numbers from the short file.

Any ideas?

That doesn't look like C at all.
C doesn't have the new keyword and it doesn't have a string type.
Are you sure you're not thinking of C++?

Let me write you a Java example to see if you can follow along.
// LinkedList is an object. All objects in Java are actually just pointers.
// harem is a pointer to a LinkedList of Strings.
// I initialise harem by giving it the pointer to a newly created, empty LinkedList of Strings.
LinkedList<String> harem = new LinkedList<String>();

// I'm copying the pointer to my original LinkedList, not copying the LinkedList itself.
LinkedList<String> haremMirror = harem;

// Add to the LinkedList that harem points to.
harem.add("megumi");

// haremMirror still points to the same LinkedList!
System.out.println( haremMirror.get(1) ); // prints "megumi"

I don't know how this works out in a multithreaded environment, though.
>>
>>59904419
Hah, you got it dude. I think was that Chrome+ or w/e it was notifications in the top right. It's never shown them before so I don't know why it would start now. Thanks for the help.
>>
>>59904433
don't get caught up in the details its essentially pseudocode, point being there's a new list and its being passed to a function. which is then editing that list. based on the language it changes.

your example is completely different in that its not being passed anywhere and is just a sequential function.
a list is made and changed within the same setting, in java when you pass a list to a function/"method" its copied instead of passed. which is the main problem.

>>
>>59904495

No, you don't understand.

public static insertMegumi(LinkedList<String> listToInsertInto)
{
listToInsertInto.add("megumi");
}

public static incrementNumber(int numberToIncrement)
{
numberToIncrement = numberToIncrement + 1;
}

...

// int is not an object, so myNum really is the number.
int myNum = 7;
// Since I'm just giving this method a copy of myNum, myNum remains unchanged.
incrementNumber(myNum);
System.out.println(myNum); // prints 7

// I'm declaring a pointer to a LinkedList, because LinkedList is an object.
LinkedList<String> harem;
// I'm placing a pointer to a newly created LinkedList in harem
harem = new LinkedList<String>()
// I am NOT copying the list to insertMegumi, I'm copying the pointer.
insertMegumi(harem);
System.out.println( harem.get(1) ); // prints megumi

>Comp sci btw
>>
>>59904753
Depends what you mean by comfortably.
Its enough to live, you'll have enough to eat. You can buy a few things here and there. But its not enough to buy new parts on a regular basis or going out everyday.

>>
>>59904743

Like I said, these objects are all implicitly pointers.
They try to hide it by removing the * and -> but they are pointers and you need to remember that or else you'll screw up fast.

Here's a Python example as well.

def update_list(list_to_update):
list_to_update[0] = "newdata"

my_list = ["olddata"]
update_list(my_list)
print my_list # ["newdata"]

This is why immutable objects are very important in these languages. Certain types like tuple guarantee that they won't be changed after they are created, which means you can pass them around to other functions and be confident that your object won't be altered.

You could whip up a quick python script which allows for a wider range of error handling, like:
f1 = open(numeratorPath, "r")
f2 = open(denominatorPath, "r")
f3 = open(outPutPath, "w")
numerators = f1.readlines()
denominators = f2.readlines()
for i in range(len(numerators)):
try:
val = float(numerators[i])/float(denominators[i])
f3.write(str(val) + "\n")
except ValueError:
print("Found bad numerator or denominator, line: " + str(i))
continue
# Possibly put dummy value in file
except ZeroDivisionError:
print("Found zero in denominator, line: " + str(i))
continue
# Possibly put dummy value in file
f3.close()
f2.close()
f1.close()

At my school, it went something like:
Computer Security: a subset of Computer Engineering, dealt with reverse engineering programs/understanding OS/HW to a great degree (i.e. network stack, linux kernel, ect), basically half CS/half EE.

Programming: Computer Science or a more general Computer Engineering degree. A focus reasoning about mathematical models of the 'structures' of programming, i.e. languages, algorithms, data structures. Also a focus on implementation of these things, i.e. databases, AI, software dev, actual programming

IT/"Network security": wasn't in the engineering department, but focused mainly on understanding not why things work, but how to set up devices/programs in business environments, ect. I was a CE, so my knowledge about what went into an IT degree is not the best

In a real-world scenario, would a dual CPU setup outperform a single CPU with the same number of cores?

For instance, say you have two machines. One has a dual core CPU, and one has two single-core CPUs, all running at the same clock speed at the same temperature under the same load. Wouldn't the latter outperform the former since each individual CPU has its own cache and RAM? (Presumably, I've never seen a dual socket board that didn't work that way.)

Like posters have said, depends somewhat on workload (i.e. is the task parallelizable?) as well as memory layout. In reality though the dual core setup is better hands down for multi-threaded, and most 'single-threaded' tasks (and compilers for those tasks) can make use of the extra cores. One of the largest costs in computing is going off-die (i.e. memory accessing), so if you wanted to run any multi-threaded application in the two seperate-die scenario, you are introducing a lot of overhead to keep memory coherent.

Does anyone have a good infographic or guide with what to disable and options to select or deselect to Windows 10 run smoothly without too much shit going on in the background?

I overclocked my 3770K to 4.2 GHz without changing voltage and if I leave my computer on the High Performance power mode it always runs at 4.2 whereas balanced lets it downclock to 1.6 when idle. From this I take balanced uses a lot less power. Should I leave it on balanced, does it make a difference in overall performance. I also suppose I should put it on high performance when gayming.

This is quite the stupid question, but I don't have a grasp on how this type of stuff works.

Let's say I want to upload some work files on Mega, would other people be able to see the files? (any public)
Or the only way they would see them is if I gave them the link/key (if the file has a decryption key)
>>
>>59908739
They need a link.

Looks like numix gtk and icon themes.

Is the W10 creator's update better or worse than the previous one?
>>
>>59908868
Better tbqh. But watch out there's some bugs e.g. I can't start GTAV with Afterburner/Rivatuner turned on. Also 3DMark doesn't launch the benchmarks for me. Hopefully they'll update those soon. There might be other issues but so far comfy.
>>
>>59908868
didn't notice any changes yet besides CMD being slowly getting phased out.
>>
I had a few spare 2tb drives laying around that are unsuitable for long term use (they got around 4 yrs of 24/7 service life on them). But they all should make nice archival drives. So I decided to put them to use.
Drive 1 - Clone of Server's OS drive
Drive 2 - Clone of Desktop's OS Drive
Drive 3 - Clone of external backup drive (Not used yet, still got core data to backup first)

Later I plan to get a 10TB drive when prices fall a bit and clone my server's Data drive as well.
I already have system images and backups but I thought this would add another layer of protection.

>>59908868
It doesn't matter. You don't have a choice in this. You WILL get the update.

If you take /g/ and remove the troll threads, the shill threads, the gayman threads, and the consumer tech threads, what do you have left? A few SQTs, ganoo/lunix threads, and thinkpad circlejerks.

/g/ is fine how it is. You can filter and hide threads that annoy you.

the shift right click shortcut to cmd changed to powershell, same goes for the shortcut when right-clicking the startbutton (though it just seems to be an option now in the task bar settings).
in the explorer file menu cmd got removed as well and only powershell is left in there now.

Well then it sounds like time to either learn Powershell (yes it's better), or make something like the old CmdHere powertoy we had back on XP.

I'm already filtering more than half of /g/. If there wasn't so many shitty threads, good threads would live longer. We could have threads dedicated to algorithms, interesting projects, free software news, learning, interesting questions that require expertise to be answered. Instead we have shit appealing to the lowest common denominator.

>>
>>59909160
You don't have any tripcode. We can see your posts. Nobody who knows the answer has come by though.

For instance I don't care much for subscription software and non subscription Photoshop is fucking expensive given I'd only be using it for hobby stuff, so I get by with free alternatives like Paint.NET and GIMP.

So, touch luck, try asking again next thread and maybe someone who knows will see it.

Pretty sure that's all technology.
You a poor fag that can't afford high quality tech or are you an anti-consumerist that wants everyone to think like you?

I have a Geforce 560 and looking to upgrade, last night drunkenly bought a gtx1060. Power consumption seems ok and according to random forums not having PCIe 3.0 is at most ~10% performance drop. But did I fuck up in some way I'm not noticing?

Why Steve Jobs looks so fat and ugly with that gay beard? It's not appropriate to be in the main section of /g/

WSL Bash is cool, but I hate that I can't run exes from it. That really limits its usefulness and makes it its own little walled garden (although one the size of Ubuntu).

This is why I end up using MSYS2 more. It gives me most Linux style command line stuff that I need, and I can run exes directly from the prompt or from my scripts. No need to install two of everything.

I have a 6 GB 1060 and it's a beast. It's no 1070 or 1080 but those are way more money for a little more performance. It's right around where you stop getting big performance leaps for small price increases.

I'm not saying these threads aren't technology, I'm saying that I wish they would be moved to a newly created consumerist board.
I don't think I'm a poorfag since I recently spent 3000€ on two new computers and I don't think I want everybody to think like me since I don't want these threads to disappear, I just want them to have their own place.

Unless you think that everything is subjective, I think we can agree on the fact that questions that require expertise in order to be answered are more interesting that questions that anybody could answer.

Gaymer fag here

My previous PC used a 6850HD, and while it wasn't that amazing with games, I would barely ever worry about temperatures or anything similar. When playing with my 2 year old shitty budget build (intel 4460, 280x) and ever since I bought it, even though I didn't bother much I noticed that it would get noticeably hot and fans be loud as fuck. One explanation could be the stock intel fan, but I was told that I wouldn't need anything better for that processor since there's no OC to be done.

Anyways, I've been wondering: Would underclocking actually help get rid of the noise/high temperatures? I've been playing some older games as of late, some I could run with my 7 year old build without much trouble, and still get 75-80C and enough noise to be really bothered. Rather lose some performance if I can just play without having to worry about things in the background.
>>
>>59909415
I'm not worried about performance but thank you for the reply.
I built this PC back when Sandybridge CPUs came out and I'm scared of some compatibility issue since it's been like 5 years and all I'm planning to do is replacing the gpu. CPU is fine for now since it's i7 2600k

>Are you sure the problem is btrfs and not the hard drive dying? I've been using btrfs for five years and never had a problem.

Yes, I've been advised on irc that it may be either bad RAM or some memory leak overwrite btrfs memory. It may be nvidia blob by the way.

I was also using it since forever, I've got bad disks with btrfs and it handled them really good, since now.

Addendum; I didn't imply that my hdd is borked. I've tested my hdd and ram. They look ok.
>>
>>59909511
Yeah, that I will fix at some point. I was wondering because I wanted to set some sort of limit to that. I always thought of performance/fan speed/temperature as a triangle, where you could improve 2 by sacrificing one of them.

No, its only valid when its valid.

if I bought a mini hdmi to rca for my rpi, would it work out of the box or would I need special software? could the software be set up headless?

Been using a "surround sound headphone" (i know its not really) with a xonar dx (connects with optical cable).

I already have a subwoofer, and was thinking, are there decent cheap speakers that I can connect to just use PCM audio? My desk kinda curves around me so, if I can clamp speakers to it that'd work great.

They dont have to be huge/loud since each speaker would be no more than 2-3ft away from me.
>>
>>59909578
Not him but, fuck, I skipped on buying one because I thought it didn't have composite out and I wanted to use it as an emulator machine with my old ass CRT TV. I might be interested now.

Listen man, on a level I completely agree, I try to filter out the noise "look at muh sweet gayman PC my dad paid for" "headphone general - same people different day muh". But what are we gonna do? Make a petition? Believe it or not I tried to do this with /HR/, I emailed mods and riled up a bit of support for a /celebHR/, guess what, no change, go there now, there's some fucking sweet high res photography, and modern and classic art... also high res pic of anna kendricks feet and kim kardashians ass...

On the other hand I know there's no point in trying with this place, it is what it is and I'm used to it at this point, if you want a place to talk about tech at a higher level, you'll have to go elsewhere, and link me when you find it.

Oh, I know that nothing will change. Turning 4chan into a place where quality discussions can be had is the least of hiro's problems. I was just answering the dude's question when he asked if he thought that /g/ would be better if some threads weren't on the board.
I used to browse lainchan, which was slightly better than /g/ although very slow. It suffered a setback recently but you could still check it out if you're looking for other places where you can talk about technology.

>>59909667
I don't think so. Programming languages are technology and there's nothing inherently consumerist about them.
>>
>>59909664
That one exactly. Way cheaper than an HDMI converter, and it'll probably look better too.

I disagree. A programming language also has a bunch of concepts associated to them such as garbage collection, monads... Grouping multiple concepts together and sticking syntax over it can be called a technology in my opinion.

The only reason to group them is for consumption. It is inherently consumerist.

This is pants on head retarded and you know it anon. I could use a programming language to simply generate numbers without any other objective than learning said language. I would be using the programming language without any attempt at consumerism.
I'm going to stop responding now, I feel like you're more interested in having the last word than having a honest discussion.
>>
>>59909945
Why are you clean installing your Windows 7 frequently enough that this is anything more than a very minor annoyance?
>>
>>59910076
>Stop using adblock, use ublock instead. It will probably solve your problem.

No. For the past few days, all ad blockers in Chrome/Chromium have been showing some ads on Youtube, particularly 3 and even 18 minute long ones with no skip button. The problem is Youtube added some shenanigans to get around the blocking. The blocker still blocks the skip button though. Worst of both worlds. We just have to wait for the blocking to be updated and work again.

Meanwhile, use Firefox and uBlock Origin for Youtube. All the ads are still blocked there.
>>
