Solus performs significantly better and is much more optimised than windows will ever be.

My laptop boots up in 3 seconds. Everything opens up instantaneously and it only uses 350MB RAM on boot instead of the 1.2GB windows uses.
>>
>>59899231
If your buisness depends on your OS, it's important to trust and be able to troubleshoot your softwares source.
Linux just works of you know what you are doing. With MS you have to trust some obscure binaries and when they inevitable fuck you in the ass you have a marginal chance to settle on court.
With linux you can only blame yourself.
So only stupid cowards use windows.

This is wrong. There are some computers that ship with an EFI implementation that lacks any kind of legacy setting and won't allow you to turn off secure boot or add your own keys. This started with ARM tablets and has worked its way up all the way to x86 laptops and all in one desktops.

But they ARE forcing you to pay for it - if you want a laptop.

I have a Windows sticker on my Pioneer receiver - also featuring Intel Inside sticker - and one on my fridge - which has AMD sticker.

The only way to avoid that crap is to build your own so I don't have a unused Windows license for my desktop or server.

There are quite a few, but you could also choose macOS. In fact, macOS is more convenient, because it doesn't have many of the issues Windows has, but it still has more software support and many things just work instead of having to spend time setting them up (for instance, network file sharing).

I mean I'd switch to loonix in a heartbeat if it had a good google drive client that wasn't actually paid (the amount of irony there is unfathomable) or a half decent word processor (LibreOffice Write reminds me not to expect that I am in control of what I am doing instead of the program which again is pretty ironic).

Windows now incorporates spyware and an ad server as well as a redirector to funnel people towards their MS store. Worse than that, MS reserves the right to sell any and all personal information they gather from you - without any ethical regard to your privacy. Additionally, windows has nagged me about my file associations to 3rd party software and several updates reset those file associations to MS programs against my wishes.

And soon, I suspect, MS will turn their OS from nagware to ransom ware - either eliminating our ability to set file associations away from MS programs and/or charging a monthly subscription fee for the OS.

MS has already gone to the dark side. And soon, I suspect, they will go totally evil. Now, you may be that guy who likes leasing everything from cars to toasters and furniture, you might be that guy who likes targeted advertising and doesn't care if everyone in the world knows about your toenail fungus and ED and heart condition (including your life insurance company). Maybe you're that one guy who has never written anything on the internet that you would not want traced directly back to you (might I remind you that you are on 4chan).
But some of us are just not that excited about the direction MS has taken.

>doesn't care if everyone in the world knows about your toenail fungus and ED and heart condition (including your life insurance company)

mandatory genetic testing and full medical database background checks will soon be as common as a credit check when applying for a job, doing shit on the internet is completely irrelevant

additionally, fixating on desktop operating systems when thinking about consumer privacy is laughable, like you're a time traveler from 2003

nobody gives a shit about that stuff anymore since phones are a much more fertile and dependable ecosystem for profiling people

With linux you can pretend to be superior to windows users for reasons nobody really gives a shit about.

That can be your life too, if it appeals to you. You too can hang around on internet, pretending to be better. And let's face it, once you have linux, what else can you do? Unless playing with your OS sounds like fun, ofc. There's just no decent software for it.

>It's easier to install and update software (no web browser required)

Some people really like the browsing for software on the web thing. I still search the web for software when I need something, like "best audio conversion tool" (before I started using FFMpeg for everything). The only difference on Linux is now I search the repo or add a PPA versus downloading an .exe.

When I moved to Linux the concept of packaging was a completely foreign concept. Just about all major software on Windows has an autoupdater (or at least a "check for updates" thing) which makes centralizing all updates seem foreign.

The closest thing we have is .deb files but those are rare, most of the time I see "oh yeah just run this command in the terminal to add the PPA, then this command to install it". That's a completely foreign experience to just downloading and installing.

I mean have you seen the installer for Chrome on Windows? It's the most hand-holdy thing on planet earth.

>inb4 disable updates
>in order to make Windows usable you have to disable critical security updates that Windows actually needs because it has more holes than swiss cheese

>>
>>59906895
It means nonfree software.

Nonfree software generally --though not universally-- actively tries to NOT do what the user wants it to do, because of commercial incentives. It serves the publisher first, and the user insofar as that doesn't conflict with the desires of the publisher. When you want it to do what YOU want rather than what the publisher wants, the software immediately becomes your enemy and tries to stop you as hard as it can.

Windows 10 is a particularly salient example of this. But the point applies more generally to all nonfree software (though there are some exceptions).

I am very much tired of using software that treats me as a prisoner, with privileges distributed according to the whims of the publisher. On my computer, I am boss, not any piece of software. Any software that tries to power struggle me can fuck right off. (Whether or not I could win this struggle is irrelevant.)
