What the fuck were they thinking!?

It's as if Porsche premiered their new ultra futuristic sports car... with a two-stroke engine.
>>

Not everything is tailored towards vidya retards.
>>
Wow. That thing should be 240Hz. Even if the difference is near imperceptible from 144Hz, just for the spec sheet.

>>>/v/
>>
Can anyone here even remotly justify or explain this to me? What could possibly make them limit the refresh rate so badly if the response time is so incredibly low?
>>
>>59886025
>>59886031

Not OP but, I don't play video games. I still want a high refresh rate monitor for normal OS use.
>>
I'm not sure 4K can be displayed at 144 Hz yet
>>
>>59886031
Honey, this is market speaking. If you release a beast like that, you want to make sure you're gonna make money on it. Gaymer kids with rich parents are a huge portion of the potential buyers.

Limiting refresh rate and no g-sync/freesync in an otherwise all-inclusive premium model is a lunatic, suicidal move.
>>
>>59886017
enjoy having the task bar burn in
>>
>>59886017
I need this.

Say NO to any light bleed as acceptable.

Its the new era boys.

>>
>>59886017
i get that it's nice cos it's a monitor and stuff but why would you buy this over a 55inch or even 65inch oled tv at that price? They're both 60hz and the latest oleds have only 20ms input lag which is better than most non-gaming monitors. Plus 55 icnhes at 4k is the same as 27 inches at 1080p which is perfectly usable.
>>
>>59886099
also 99% dci-p3
>>
Why the hell would you waste extra power for 144hz? It literally doesn't make a difference for daily use, and it only matters on like 5% of the games.
>>
Instead of shouting at each other, could anyone, please, conjure up some plausible explanation for the downgrade? Because first announcements plainly stated 120 Hz.
>>
>>59886150
The monitor had a shitton of engineering issues, perhaps since more refresh rate means more led use per frame by halving the framerate they half the time for burn in and pixel death to occur
>>
>>59886166
Thank you.
>>
>>59886150
They figured out that their prime target customers would be designers, so ditching freesync/g-sync makes sense from the marketing perspective.
>>
>paying $3499 for planned obsolescence

Enjoy your yellow whites in a few years.
>>
>>59886150
Announcement =/= reality. Dell doesn't make panels. Neither does Asus, Acer, AOC, HP, or anyone else. They make plastic cases for panels that are made by entirely seperate companies who they either place orders with or follow along behind what the rest of the market is doing. Dell probably wanted to be the first to release a 4K, 120hz, OLED monitor and got ahead of themselves since as far as I know, no such panel exists from any of the big 3 manufacturers of OLED displays. People expressed this concern when it was announced, lo and behold they ended up retracting that claim.

A few people who were still dumb enough to buy this monitor found out the manual is misprinted and still says "120hz" in it.

Regardless, OLED still has real problems (input latency is still high, burn-in hasen't been solved) and getting in on the ground floor isn't going to earn you any brownie points.

High frame rate and xSync are gaming marketing bullshit, and are not needed for graphical jobs.

You known, Eizo $5000 monitors are 60Hz as well.

>>59886068
>Wow, it's almost as if it's not for gaming.
This.
>>
>>59886322
Fuck sakes why can't Sony get back into the monitor game, in their first crack at OLED they had already solved the sample and hold problem using impulse driving and had all the relevant modelines for 24p/29.97/48/50i/50/60//72/75p @ 10-bit per channel

Bring back the trinitron already
>>
>>59886577

Sony is a joke, they buy all of their OLED panels from LG now to use in their TV's. Having to buy panels from a competitor just to stay relevant because they dropped the ball so bad lmao.
>>
>>59886017
>wide gamut ultrasharp
>for gaming
Pick one.
>>
>>59886017
Shit, I thought it had been cancelled
>>
>>59886605
I thought Sony make their own "super emission" panels or whatever it's called, the 4K Sony I saw in 2014 was easily better than the LG signature series so it can't be the same panel
>>
>>59886056
This hasn't been a problem for a while now. AMOLED/OLED tech has vastly improved since the galaxy S1 days.

I've been using my Note 4 for about 3 years now and no burn-in whatsoever has occurred.
>>
>>59886048
It can.
>>
>>59886725
Sony super top emission panels would retail at %20-30 more and will probably never hit full scale production since WOLED is "basically good enough"
>>
Guys, although OLEDs have a very fast response time that doesn't neccessarily mean they can have a higher refresh rate. A higher refresh rate would mean massively increased lifetime switching of the OLEDs. It probably would cause unacceptably fast degradation.

The controller technology probably isn't quite there either yet.
>>
>>59886079
>>59886055

Dell has never bothered with gaymers and is doing just fine you retarded fucks. Do you know what monitors you can find at majority of offices? Well, obviously you don't because you have never been to one.
They don't give 2 shits about gaymer children when they can suck out money from corporations.
>>
>>59886017
That's a stupid analogy, 2 strokes produce far more power for the same displacement.
>>
Why would you buy a screen like that for gaming?

Looks amazing anyways, I hope to work with something like that someday. Editing photos with my old ass panel hurts.
>>
>>59886017
>Implying a 2T car wouldn't be fucking amazing
>>
>>59886017
i totally need 12000hz for photoshop and indesign which is what this monitor is targeted to.
>>
>>59886017
4K can't go above 60hz yet, did you forget?
>>
>>59886759

it was announced sure, but not out

DP1.3 can drive UHD at 120 Hz though.
Can today's GPUs deliver? Probably not, unless you want to play 10 yo games
>>
>>59886099
>27, 1080, usable
Just no.
22-24 is usable. So 4k anything larger than 45 is shit for a monitor.

yeah your note 4 has screen on time of 6+ hours daily
>>
>>59886017
This is for professional media work.
>>
>>59886166
>>59886196
I don't know why you're thanking him for a retarded explanation that doesn't even make sense. Pixels are refreshed with a frequency of at least 200 hz even if the input image doesn't change. Also, burn-in is caused by keeping LEDs lit, not by changing their state.
>>
>>59886577

They are in the most profitable segment they could sell monitors to; live production and critical viewing for on-the-field shooting. No wonder LG now want a its share of the pie.

>>59886725

Even then, their reference 55-inch monitor doesn't use Super Top Emission panel structure:

https://www.sony.co.uk/pro/attachment/1237494938156

It seems either their fab lines can't handle substrate production of latest generation efficiency (9 or 10G), or if they can it could be too cost-prohibiting and prefer to outsource them.
>>
>>59886017
it's without gaming properties though sadly, except 0,1ms response time
>>
>>59886017
Can anyone redpi me on modern OLED panels, would they burn in the taskbar after a while as some anon here said, or are they advanced enough?
>>
I was ready to replace my EIZO CG + Asus ROG combination for this beast.
60Hz though? Fuck that.
>>
>>59886017
>>60 Hz
thank god, fuck vidya autists, you don't need 120/144+hz unless you're an actual professional
>>
I would buy this if it had displayport 1.4. MST doesn't work well in Linux and hdmi2 is lossy. I'll wait for the next generation.
>>
>>59886099
>oled tv
Not the same technology. OLED TVs use the OLEDs as a backlight and put an IPS panel on top. Presumably this Dell is a real OLED display like cell phones have.
>>
>OyyLED
>pixel rot

kek
>>
>30"
>4K

Have to UI scale, making the screen pointless garbage.
>>
>>59891112
No, you're a complete fucking retard. You're trying to kind of quasi-explain quantum dot LED TVs, but even then you're fucking it all up.

Actual OLED televisions use an actual OLED panel.
>>
>>59886017
Aren't OLEDs still pretty slow? thought they were good for movies and stuff, but the rates weren't there for much else.
>>
>>59886017
