What's a good method for backing up important files?
I'm from /agdg/ and I do uploads to source control everytime I do work, and then roughly once a week I backup to an external hard drive.
However, I'm getting paranoid as I get further along and want to make sure I'm doing things properly so I don't have to ever experience data loss. What else can I do to help preserve data in a (preferably) automated manner?

whatever you do, check the backups periodically else you may end up with a bad surprise when the worst happens.
Make an off-site backup too.
If your house burns down you're fucked.
If you already do that, then like the other anon said, try to recover from that backup (into another place on your computer) and make 100% sure it works.
Who was it recently? gitlab? those guys had like 10 backups, but they never tested actually retrieving data from the backups and only one shitty backup worked and it was a lot of work
Paper is the only way to be fully safe.
