why is this still analog?
>>
You have a digital scroll wheel already, it's called PgUp/PgDn
>>
>>59881125
not even close to being analog
there is a photocoupler inside that shines light through the wheel which chops up the light into a quadrature signal which the mouse then processes
there is a finite number of steps that can be detected in a rotation of the wheel
>>
>>59881253

This is not true wtf. I've broken them and seen the thing inside.
>>
>>59881125
What's wrong with analog scrolling?

because not knowing where one button ends and the next one begins is awful

(also not knowing which side is forward)
>>
>>59881270
you clearly didn't know what you were looking at, then
>>
>>59881125

but that shit is digital you retard
>>
>>59881253
>not analog
> wheel which chops up
> steps ... in a rotation of the wheel
if thats not mevhanical*, i dont know whats is

*op probavly didnt mean analog\digital, but mechanical vs solid sensors

i can understand this being an issue if you're concerned about people with cognitive disabilities or something, but for normal people identifying the front end of a mouse from the rear — even in the case of the supposedly ambiguous faggy apple mouse — isn't that hard.
>>
>>59881125
it's not.

Oh my God OP you're a genius. Let's replace the scroll wheel with the same joystick they had on the psp and the ds xl
>>
>>59881424
why is the sky tasty? btw by tasty i mean blue
>>
>>59881645
dsi xl didnt have a joystick
and 3ds is quite different from PSPs, not that it isn't shit as well
unless you mean the n3ds' second "joystick"
>>
>>59882251
I meant just the flat joystick on the 3ds
>>
>>59881125
Everything's gotta be analog at some point retard.
>>
>>59883728
>he thinks energy is not quantized
High schoolers OUT
>>
>>59881125
He may have a point, scroll wheels are usually the first part to get broken.
A better question is, what can be a decent alternative for scrolling? A touch zone? Two seperate buttons? How are you gonna adjust the speed? What about a clit mouse on top of your mouse?
>>
>>59884285
I don't think there's a single replacement. We could just have different mouses with different methods (like we kinda do today, it is not like touch-mouses etc don't exist)

The scroll wheel is kinda cool kinda it is clicky (usually) yet it can still be used fir a quick movement almost like a pgup/pgdn or a touch screen scrolling thingy, it can be used either for quick scrolling though pages or for selecting a precise item in a list, etc
>>
>>59881125
What OP may have meant is: "Why is this still mechanical?"

>>

Digital input devices are cancer
>>
>>59881125

why is there not just a capacitve button that you can tap to quickly navigate, just like the up and down arrows
>>
>>59881125
it was never analog
all it does is send instantaneous events when you turn it a certain amount either way
>>
>>59884439
Clitmaus
>>
>>59881253
stop generalizing. mine uses a regular mechanical encoder
>>
>>59881125
>digital scroll wheel
>communicates by sending on/off signals when opto encoder senses motion
>not already digital
you have no idea what digital and analog even are do you?
>>
>>59881125
Ever heard of"if it ain't broke,don't fix it"?Shit thread,op!
>>
>>59884558
OP is an underage fag
>>
In this thread people never heard of the Microsoft arc touch mouse
>>
>>59881125
it just works
what the fuck do you want to replace it with?
it's designed the way it is because it is easy to use
>>
>>59881125
it's digital in fact
lurk: rotary encoder
>>
>>59884285
>A better question is, what can be a decent alternative for scrolling?
I have this, and it's actually quite brilliant to use. Scrolls up and down with inertial scrolling. Tap 3 areas for 3 buttons. It even CLICKS WHILE SCROLLING, which is freaky. The only thing it doesn't have is side tilts.

For productivity, I actually prefer it to standard mouse wheels, and maybe even above Logitech's frictionless wheel. I prefer frictionless scrolling, but no detents makes middle mouse (wheel) clicking tricky.
>>
>>59881160
I have a mechanical keyboard
>>
>>59885708

I have one of those, I fucking love it.

If it had forward and back buttons on the side, it would be the perfect mouse.
>>
>>59881308

>also not knowing which side is forward

The Apple logo is at the bottom you retarded fuck. How can you be this dumb?
>>
>>59884439
I like the keyboard nipple, but this...
>>
>>59885708
Please tell me that when you power on your PC it arches up from flat.
>>
>>59885725
this is bait right?
Nobody can be this stupid
>>
>>59886306
You turn it on by bending it, if it's flat turned off
>>
>>59886306
Have you seen the Microsoft one?
Looks like the Bayonne Bridge.
>>
>>59884455

because that by definition would not be digital
>>
Apple Magic Mouse doesn't have this problem :^)
>>
>>59881308
there are plenty of legit reasons to hate on apple, this is not one of them
>>
>>59885725
Me too, and I use Page Up and Page Down daily.
>>
>Rotary encoders
>Analog
Lol no, but now that I think about it a nice, smooth greased pot for a scroll wheel would be nice.
>>
>>59884487
underrated
>>
Who /trackball/ here?
>>
>>59881308
that mouse is fucking GOAT. only retards who never used it hate it. it's literally sex for your hand

of course it's a rotary encoder, the wheel itself is part of it
