Hi /g/,
perhaps someone can clue me in on this.
There is a gaping hole in the computer market that hasn't been filled since 2005. I'm talking about nondescript, resilient, matte black laptops with satisfying, non-mushy key response and a user-servicable design. In short, I'm talking about quality laptops for rich nerds.
Why hasn't this gap been filled yet?

System76 laptops aren't too shabby and relatively easy to upgrade (as far as laptops go anyway)
When the fuck is that retro thinkpad coming out? I swear I took the survey for that like 3 years ago.

OP here. I'm not exactly lamenting the gap. I try not to let it bum me out too much.
But I am curious about the economics. What's preventing one of the bigger companies from shifting focus to quality, or a smaller hardware startup sheltered by, say, Y-Combinator Research or something?

I already told you, Purism. They are pretty new though, so I can't say much about them.
