Hard drive is kill

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 113

My ex's kids got to my hard drive, and managed to break and bend some of the pins. Is there anything I can do at all to either fix it or atleast pull all the content off it? My whole life is on it and I'll be devastated if everything is lost.

learn how to backup you stuff next time e.g. in a secound drive or a cloud service

>>
>>59878799
My best guess would be soldering in new connector, but I have no idea if it's even possible. You are probably fucked.
>>
>>59878799
All I can suggest is rigging up some sort of direct connection mate. Just so long as nothing else is damaged. Like the disk. Since that hols the data really. From now on though use enclosures, and/or locks depending on whether the drive is being used internally or externally.

Straighten that shit out and pray. I pulled all the data off a drive with the plastic bits of the SATA connection broke off entirely, had to solder that shit to a cable.
>>
>>59878868
>i think your only choice is a professional repair service
This OP, you either need a very delicate soldering job which you can't do, or replacing the whole electronics board from another identical drive which you also can't do or you wouldn't be asking here.

Expect to pay up a good few hundred USD for the job, but on the flip side, your data is almost 100% safe inside unless your wife's son fucked with it while it was runniong.
>>
>>59878899
To expand on this, if you can get the pins lined up, you might be able to ease a standard cable in there and prop the drive up in such a way that you can grab the data.
>>
>>59878799
bend them back

PCB look damaged so unless you know how to solder to test if the drive is working, chances are the drive have inside damage too.
Also, learn to make backups
>>
>>59878799
buy an identical HD and replace the PCB
>>
>>59878799
You can send it to me, i fix hard drives. It is easy to fix.
>>
/g/ if this happened to you, how would you go about fixing this?

Personally I think i'd try my hand at soldering the wire connections directly to a sata cable/power cable and hope that worked.

Though thinking about it I'm sure that part is on digikey/china somewhere and could be independent of the PCB...

I suppose you could look into a way to swap the board and connector with another 2.5 inch drive as their the only bits damaged. No idea if you need the same spec/manufacturer etc.

Oh fags. It's really really wrong to do this thoughtlessly, HD uses combination of ROM on board and adjustable bits on a plates (adaptives), mismatched board can ruin the data beyond repair (or it may work flawlessly, but fuck these experiments with valubale data)

>>59878799

They just need to use the same firmware version sherlock
>>

Exactly, that's why I'm telling OP to just use a pcb with the same firmware as his old one

>>59879515
All of these attributes are stored on the plates too, and if you're just reading data, not writting neither trying to use that drive, it will sufice.
>>
>>59879499
You attend service when you need to change you windshield wipers or what?
>>
>>59878799
Professional recovery services are expensive but they'll be able to clone your data to a new drive or replace some of the internal components. It's really your only option.
>>
>>59879551
I was joking mostly, but replacing the plates are way too much hassle for most people as any dust or debris that gets on the plate during the transplant could fuck up disastrously.
>>
Two possibilities:

Solder individual connections to a new SATA connector. The pins look fine so there's no reason this wouldn't work.
or
Just try to bend the pins back into position.

I've had a drive similarly fucked up and a little bit of superglue and a SATA cable was all I needed to make it usable again
>>
>>59879276
>>59879128
>Replace the part of the hard drive the keeps track of all the sectors
>>
>>59879545
Look, when HD initialize with wrong firmware it may start count good sectors as bad (i'm oversimplifying it, google up) because intra-ROM mappings for servo in alien firmware may differ (or not), thus filling G-list and making first sectors with MBR\GPT unaccessible. If you read on the user side it doesn't mean that intensines of HD will only read as well.
>>59879611
sry, too dumb. You right about platters, but one of my comrades had an written-off Maxtor Diamondmax which he opened up and used for fun on his desk for a week, and the bitch worked
>>
>>59879685
>Look, when HD initialize with wrong firmware
That's why you use the same firmware version, for the damn 3rd time, are you this dense?
>>
>>59879739
Nah, just fucking look up what adaptives means.
I'll wait.
>>
>>59879768
You just stop being a fucking faggot who can't accept that using a different pcb from the same model and firmware version could save his data, it has worked plenty of times for most people.
How about you look up what being an asshole means.
I'll wait.
>>
>>59879739
How does one get the right firmware version? that's not a feature they list on the box...

>>59879768
I would suspect that the info you're looking for be stored on the drive platter itself, and not on some non-volatile chip on the pcb... but maybe that is being a bit too clever...

This.

This is your only real, reliable option.

You could try to find a harddrive of similar make, model, and batch and try swapping the parts out. The chance of success is still pretty low at best.
>>
>>59879814
Stop being a shitstain.
>plenty of times

It's not an axiom, and you said it yourself. You can destroy data as well.
>>59879739
>>59879768
Adaptive tip: it's a manufacturer written firmware parameters unique for any single HD, like magnetic head write voltage, params regarding thermal expansion. It may be kept on platters, in a flash chip on board, it depends on a disk.

If you did this, but formatted the replacement HDD to the same filesystem before the PCB swap would data recovery be possible? I'm out of the loop but I don't think any data relative to the contents of the HDD are on the PCB; just the structure of the partitions.

If you've got money, you can almost certainly pay someone to recover your data, assuming the kids didn't smack it around while it was running, and assuming they didn't actually open the casing.

Drivesavers is the one data recovery place I know of off the top of my head. I think Seagate owns them. Expect to pay $800 or more.

If you are going to do it by yourself though I would at least practice with another drive if you have any spares. The general rule of thumb is that if the data is worth more than the recovery you should send it in.

Replace pcb with the most similar model you can find on ebay, (check for model numbers on the pcb itself) the seller will often circle the bios rom chip in the images if one needs to be swapped. Otherwise check for a rom chip yourself. I usually try it without replacing anything first as sometimes it just works. (This won't touch your data) If not use a hot air rework station to replace this chip on the new board with the one from your drive.

Or take it to a repair shop. I work at one and this is exactly what we do.

Some people just never learn. A few years ago a girl sitting next to me in college burst into tears mid-lecture after she got a call back from a computer technician about her dead hard drive. He quoted her over $1k to make an ATTEMPT at getting the data back, with no guarantee it'd be successful. Come to find out she had her only copy of her thesis on that laptop, which was due in a few weeks. I'm curious to know her plan if her laptop got lost or stolen, or destroyed in a fire... then there'd be zero chance at recovery.
>>
Are they fucking retards?

What kind of kid just breaks shit for no reason?
>>
Take it to a professional. This is not something you should fix yourself. Also, you should be old enough to know that you never have important information on just ONE storage medium. Have physical backups on other hard drives and even cloud backups if you can. The more the better but obviously don't make 38 backups.

No dumbshit. Usually every drive has to be calibrated for the minute manufacturing differences of heads, platter coverage, servos, and motors. That is bound to the ROM.

You MUST swap the ROM.

There's only one way to fix this. Go on ebay and buy the EXACT SAME MODEL of that HDD. doesn't matter if it's used or not.

then just unscrew the electronics board and connect the one from the donor HDD.

I've replaced "dead" HDDs this way many times. in your case, the damage isn't with platters so it's even easier.
