How did Microsoft get so close to nailing it entirely with Windows 7, then go back so far with every iteration since?
>>
>>59875651
Explain how W10 is inferior to W7 without mentioning the botnet meme or the arguably bad behavior of Windows Update, which is getting better.

>Without mentioning shitty things
Better UI for straight desktop use. Does not force the install of any updates on any version, without having to tweak anything. No obtrusive ads in the middle of crucial UI elements. Control panel functions not awkwardly split between the 'classic' control panel and a UWP interface. No intrusive 'assistant'. No nagging for using browsers other than the bundled one. Much more useful Start menu search.

Honestly, most of the good points I could list for 10 are either features carried over from 8 or things that are improved relative to 8. 10 isn't a terrible OS in isolation, it's just a step backwards.

All these things either never get in my way or are changing, like the temporary Settings/Control panel split. Admittedly they did stupid things but I just find ths OS comfy and functional overall.

I'm seriously considering reverting to windows 7. Windows 10 looks nice and all, but 2 hours worth of ricing can pretty much get you any look you want anyway. Kiddies are just retarded. The whole botnet meme is laughable. Microsoft is doing the same thing as any internet company has been doing since late 1990s. Google, Yahoo and such get a free pass but as soon as Microsoft does it. It becomes "OMFG! YOU ARE DATA-MINING! TEH BOT-NET!"

Internet and meaningful privacy are mutually exclusive terms.

The question is, why split them at all?

They're still focusing on making Windows look like a tablet Fisher Price OS, just like they did with Windows 8. I seriously don't understand all the praise for W10...

>XP was loathed on release too, anon.

No.jpeg

XP certainly had a few driver problems, but it was a pretty smooth upgrade from Win2K. And it kept getting better & fixes rapidly. Generally speaking, there were few reasons for people to migrate to XP at first. Most people migrated to XP by choice or stayed with it because that was what came on new computers and had little reason to back-migrate to Win2K.

You are thinking of Vista, which eventually got fixed, somewhat, around the time Win7 became as stable as XP. People spent Vistas original release life and the first year of Win7 back-migrating to XP.

The primary reason, even today, to move off XP is to move to a 64-bit platform. The secondary reason, nearly neck and neck with the primary, is gaymemers needing .... the 64-bit platform. It's only in the last two years or so that advanced multi-core/multi-thread integration of programs has become common enough and stable enough to really require 64-bit operating systems.
>>
>>59882955
Maybe that's why the offered it for free
>>
>>59885965
Has telemetry been introduced into Windows 8.1 by default or does it only appear in the form of "security updates"?
>>
>>59886398

It's there by default from Win 8. Updates "enhance" the experience. Same for 8.1 but moreso, then you get it on steroids with Win10. Win7 has some telemetry, but mostly it's added in during updates (SEE >>59885180 and google around to avoid / uninstall).

If you want to avoid it "mostly" then go with Vista, which pretty much got patched & fixed to Win7 levels ... but it's no longer supported and is missing some unusual drivers for modern hardware. If you're running hardware from ~2 years & more ago, you'll probably get lucky. If you're running 2017 hardware, you're looking at Win10 or maybe Win7 if you're lucky. Pretty much no real reason to go with Win 8/8.1. If you don't care about botnet, better to just go with Win10 and figure how to control it as best you can.
>>
>tfw they make it as hard as possible for you to install W7 with new hardware...
>>
>>59886398
Get Win10 enterprise, use the policy editor to disable telemetry and updates. Do updates manually, when you want and choose.

Use the host file to block all suspicious IPs.

You can even disable the built-in DNS client Windows has that is supposedly bypassing the hosts file.

>mfw when Windows requires more maintenance than a typical GNU/Linux install

If I really wanted to I could install a distro with telemetry, opt-in during install, then go through all these difficultires to disable it again.
Doing updates when I want is the standard behaviour, so I don't need to edit any settings through tools designed for experienced computer administrators.
I optionally can use my own hosts file to block IPs, or not do anything and keep my privacy anyway.
If the built-in DNS client is acting up I can replace it with anything I like, even though no existing DNS client would bypass my firewall without explicitly being told to do so.

feels good, man

It's been split since Win 8 and there have been numerous updates and iterations of Win 8 and Win10 at this point. The UI is still random and not intuitive on Win 10. Try to be more objective.
>>

You don't remove the botnet because it's baked in to every single version except some special rare case where it's a Chinese version for them to install their own botnet.

XP64 was the best running OS MS ever put out in my experience. Lack of drivers due to how late it was released was a major problem. But it's whole new story when it's a mutual thing like Operating System does that. You use it everytime you use computer. It's invading your territory. It should be your own business what you do with computer. Oh, did I mentioned that you also pay for OS? Jewest thing I know.
