I'm new to the world of cryptocurrency, and I'm looking into setting up my PC to start mining. Electricity is included in my rental bill so I don't give a shit about that. However, I've heard that mining can put a lot of strain on your PC and potentially damage it. Is that true? If so, is there software you can download (e.g. to control the CPU fan) to mine crypto without damaging your PC? I'm away from my flat/sleeping for about 16 hours per day so potentially I could have it running all that time. I'm not a tech guy, so apologies if any of what I said is stupid, all advice appreciated.
If it matters, my processor is an Intel Xeon CPU X5450 @ 3.00GHz and I have 6GB RAM.

You're gonna be mining dust.

Why, because my PC isn't powerful enough or because I've missed the boat? I don't care if I only get a minuscule amount desu, I'll try to mine one of the new and (in my opinion) up-and-coming cryptos so it'll just be a way to stock up on a few of those. Obviously I can just buy some, but this might be less hassle.
bump for interest

You can't mine with CPUs really well today, GPUs/ASICs are the way to go. A card like the R9 390 / RX 480 can net you around 2.5 $ per day on Ethereum mining.

We don't know, we are just gamers and linux desktop ricers.

How do you know if your GPU is good enough? I've got the Intel G41 Express Chipset with mine, no idea if that's good or not (probably not, as it's a fairly cheap PC).

you can't mine with that crap
either buy an asic for bitcoin or litecoin, or get a proper gpu and mine some shitcoin
