My old Boss Micro BR-80 died. Time for an upgrade.

I use the Zoom H6 daily, make sure you get the shotgun attachment if you are going to buy it, carrying case, directional and dynamic are ok.
quality of audio is amazing, only bad thing i have to say about it is that the UI is pretty clunky.

It's great. Substantially better then the H4N. The biggest thing you'll notice that improves with the H6 over the H4n and other audio recording devices is the amazing noise floor. The H6 has a fantastic noise floor. Which means you can raise the sound levels up in post alot without hearing much background buzz and hissing. That's a godsend for indie work.

the olympus ls-100 and the roland r26 are fucking amazing. i've used both and stick with the olympus now, but the sound quality (whether through condenser mics plugged in to the xlr inputs, or line in) on both is second-to-none. both devices are also actively supported by their manufacturers and have received regular firmware updates which actually fix bugs that have been reported, and add new features.

1. portable digital recorder like the ones being mentioned in this thread
2. a small external preamp if you buy a cheap one or something without xlr inputs
3. at-least semi-decent condenser or cardioid mics (directional or omnidirectional, depending on what you're intending to record) and some wind-shields
4. cables
5. memory card
6. computer, for further manipulating your recordings when needed.
