Basically, they modularised the OS into a small system that can run anywhere and you can add or remove components from according to your needs.
Soon, even the interface will be rebuilt and sandboxed into distinctive components, so every windows device, from your appliance, to your phone, to your xbox, to your desktop, to will run exactly the same OS(barring stuff like the w32 support subsystem in desktops, of course).
