New Windows 10 update requires you to uninstall Steam. You can't continue to use W10 without updating as you all know, since it forces you to update and will reset your computer even if you are using it after waiting long enough.

Today its Steam, tomorrow it'll be whatever else Microsoft doesn't like. Congrats on installing an operating system that literally forces you to uninstall programs whenever it feels like or it stops working.

If only Valve wasn't complete shit and made a Linux distro that wasn't total garbage and kicked the shit out of AMD and NVidia to write some motherfucking drivers.

Sure thing pajeet. It totally has nothing to do with valves criticism of microsoft and trying to push linux more. Microsoft totally isn't going to use updates to silence programs they don't approve of.

>>
>>59868152
Well firstly this is a fake screenshot and story.

Secondly, 'subscription service','cloud', and 'advertising platform' were the buzzwords flying around microsoft's board meetings.
They saw the money around targeted adverts and decided they wanted some of that, so they are turning windows into a platform for collecting information and delivering ads.

Expect over the next few years for the transformation of windows to be into a facebook-like advertising platform as a subscripton service, putting more shit online, integrating with microsoft clouddrive so that people can't just quit their service and go to linux.

Agreed. Look what happened when people revolted against Vista: we got Windows 7.

By putting up with and making excuses for Windows 10, people have allowed Microsoft to rape them more and more every day and they ask for more. It's your grave Windows 10 users.

Windows 7 is barely better than Vista. It's pretty much the same OS with a facelifted UI and a couple of patches.

The real thing that made Windows 7 go over better was that between Windows vista release and Windows 7 release, most people upgraded to computers that were slightly beyond utter toaster tier.

They're the self-proclaimed "power users" who download and install a bunch of random shit from the net to rice their desktops, "disable" telemetry, and shit like that. They fuck their PCs up and then blame Microsoft when it all goes pear-shaped. You can tell because this clown has even riced his Steam UI.

>Windows 7 is barely better than Vista

Nah, Windows 7 was vastly better than Vista.

>It's pretty much the same OS with a facelifted UI and a couple of patches

It's pretty much just like any other piece of software then? Wow, how perceptive of you.

>The real thing that made Windows 7 go over better was that between Windows vista release and Windows 7 release, most people upgraded to computers that were slightly beyond utter toaster tier

Nah. Run Vista and then 7 on the same hardware and 7 will run much better.

Windows 7 was, and still is, the best consumer OS Microsoft ever released.

I HAVE run Vista and 7 on the same hardware. Literally runs the same. The only way you'll notice any differences is if you run release time Vista and release time 7. Vista is slightly worse in that case, because it's missing a couple of good patches, but the difference isn't day and night and it's not a fair comparison either because Vista had those patches by the time 7 released.

>I HAVE run Vista and 7 on the same hardware

So have I. Using old hardware that was released at the time when Vista was new, I re-visited both operating systems a couple years back. Both fully patched and up to date and 7 always was the clear winner. Perhaps you were using newer hardware which masked the difference.
>>
>>59873286
In that screenshot you have a LOT of margin of error benchmarks. If you were getting benchmarks results like that between 7 and Vista, it's the same deal. Sometimes I have like 5% between short benchmarks on the same hardware and same OS.

If your difference was that small, it's margin of error.

On a related note, the summary on that chart is retarded and I have serious questions about the methology on those benchmarks where there is a 20% deficit from 7 to 8 on the same driver.

VM (KVM+QEMU) with GPU Passthrough > Dual boot
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37D2bRsthfI
Problem is you need hardware that supports it, I was lucky that my i7 4790 had an iGPU I wasn't using which supports VT-d so I have access to 2 GPUs without having to resort to buying a second dedicated GPU.

Performance penalty is so minimal you won't notice it, even managed to get the HTC Vive running in a VM without issue. Along with any other windows applications that you cannot run on linux reliably.
Once you have it up and running it is beautiful. I've always wanted to mess around with a linux distro of choice as my host OS, now I open up windows like I would any other program without worrying as much about restarting for updates and spying since most of my activity is on the host OS, while windows is mostly used for playing games.
>>
>>59873436
>In that screenshot

I like how you neglect what I said in my post and focus on the image which is only semi-related to what I said at best. Perhaps I should have used no image, hmm. Anyway, I didn't create the image. You also focus on 5% as a margin of error. And? Some gamers wet themselves if they get a 3% increase in fps so, whatever.

>On a related note, the summary on that chart is retarded and I have serious questions about the methology on those benchmarks where there is a 20% deficit from 7 to 8 on the same driver.

What are these questions? It isn't hard to run a series of tests where the only deciding variable(s) is the OS and drivers.

If you reinstall steam it wants to reinstall all your games aswell. A considerable pain in the ass when you have over 70 installed games averaging on about 5gb each.

Arch is a joke distro which is made to teach schoolkids CLI, it's never employed in production by serious companies. Every developed distro has a minimal installer up to installing an OS from a chroot environment, for example Ubuntu Core or debootstrap, schoolkids don't know about it, they think that there's only a GUI installer in Ubuntu and Debian.

Gentoo is a professional distro with a high level of flexibility through the robust established compilation toolchain, the unified interface for compilation flags in the portage system, good tools for kernel compilation. For example Google uses Gentoo as a base for Chrome OS.

To cut long story short, Arch is for pajeets who can't manage their time but who want to show that they know CLI, Gentoo is for professional engineers who want a reliable and flexible system.

Nice, then you can finally prevent Windows 10 from updating itself all the time. Just keep Steam installed. What are they gonna do, uninstall it without your consent?

This is a lie. Windows Defender is just overzealous on what it defines as malware, and tends to remove cracks because they're unsigned software and look like malware. This isn't limited to pirated content, even real, non-pirated games can trigger it.
>>
>>59867610
>wow it's fucking nothing
It's a pain to get a new steam install to find games installed under an old install. Sometimes steam finds libraries just fine, other times it wants to redownload large chunks of the game for no reason.

>OP might have been running an older version of Steam on their system.
Steam automatically updates on every start, so about the only way to be running an older version is if it were left open for weeks or months, then closed without launching again.

I am slow, took me 2 days to get it all working the way I want. Less to get it to do something. Once you figure it out once much easier to setup later.
It is duanting, same deal when I started but just dived head in after a week on and off hesitating and reading about it online.

My only gripe is that passing the dedicated GPU back from guest to host is a pain with NVIDIA.
Read of people managing to do so with AMD cards, with NVIDIA there is one way I haven't bothered trying which involves using 2 instances of X server.

Ideally I want to be able to have my iGPU run my portrait monitor on host OS always, while the dGPU switches my main 4K display between guest and host OS automatically.
Currently this does not seem possible, I have to keep dGPU tied to guest VM can't pass it back to host with the iGPU.

Will switch to Wayland once it supports GPU hotplugging. Not going to deal with this clusterfuck now, I just run another linux distro as a VM and pass the GPU to it if I want to do anything intensive.
Haven't found any need to desu famalam, except perhaps later when I start tweaking MPV to use dGPU since I currently use HD4600 with mpv on a 4K display, no bueno.

Since not everyone is seeing the message, we should ask why only some do. The upgrade process requires at least 10gb of free space. Perhaps people with less than that are being prompted to uninstall programs that are taking up lots of disk space so there will be room for the upgrade to proceed.
