I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>
>>59863738
Had a look through synaptic, installed kernel was 4.4.0.21, updated to 4.4.0.72 through official repos (just with apt-get upgrade)

It seems however I can install 4.8.0 and possibly even 4.10 by installing linux-generic-hwe-16.04 (appending -edge to the package installs 4.10).

Weird, it seems it would have kept me on the same package and only installed updates to that specific package (so those tiny point releases) ad infinitum, but this is LTS so it makes sense.

4.10 HERE I GO
>>
>>59863704

Fuck yes! All that had to happen was to manually install the latest kernel metapackage. So far so good.

Now that that's over is there any reason to use the absolute latest kernel? Especially considering the big point releases seem to be more about features than optimization (or at least from what I understand about it).

it's a good OS but it tries to grasp too much

we have LM Cinnamon, LM MATE, LMDE Cinnamon and LMDE MATE

Honest question: how much LM users actually run anything other than LM Cinnamon?

They should drop all those alternatives and focus in offering a solid LM Cinnamon experience.

we don't really need a slightly different version of Ubuntu MATE LTS or Debian non-free.

Can someone explain to me why XFC UIs always look so much uglier than KDE?

I hear KDE is heavy and slow, but there are so many pretty UIs on it.
>>
>>59872447
Yes, in comparison to KDE xfce always is found lacking. Don't know why thou. Maybe it's "not so nice" by default - you know rustic and stuff.

Supposed KDE's heaviness kept me away from it away for a while. Maybe really at some point it was heavy but right now if you don't use a hardware from beyond the eons you will be fine.
>>
>>59872518
Is there a newer sort of KDE?

Like I want to be able to have stuff like the blur that Windows 7 has. Taskbar animations. I want to be able to really customize it to put command line on my desktop. That "heavy" stuff.

I'm trying to pick a Distro and windowing.
Netrunner looks really fucking comfy, but also heavy and blah blah.
So I guess the best idea is that I should go with Arch and add a lot of what Netrunner adds...
>>
>>59872628
Newer? Guess you will be happy with plasma which is KDE 5.x ( some distros are still using 4.x which is also ok, but looks less 'modern' ).
I was really happy with opensuse leap. Right now I am testing Fedora's KDE spin and it's ok so far ( few days ).

Is it worth using Arch if I'm going to slow it down with KDE and shit?
Should I just go with Manjaro? What's the downside to using Manjaro?
Like is the package manager different? Will I get updates later?
Thus am I better off just starting with Arch and adding all that stuff myself?
The nicer installer that comes with Manjaro and more just plain working at the start does look nice..

I guess the disadvantage with starting with Manjaro is that it might want to screw up my own customizations I do while Arch won't?

Also how hard is it to migrate all your stuff over to another distro? Void looks really interesting, but so immature right now. I could see myself switching to it in 2 years but I HATE starting over with a fresh OS install.

>>59872709
Yeah, I searched for that blur shit for Linux and there's something available for it with KDE Plasma.

My experience with any linux distro amounts to a grand total of about 16 hours over the past two days. I've been distro hopping in a virtual machine on Windows 10. I think I made the same mistake as many Windows users in thinking that different distros means different desktop environments. In these 16 hours, I've learned otherwise. Please correct me, linux users. It seems to me that most distros allow you to use most desktop environments. I think I like XFCE (I always strip out all the visual enhancements from Windows. I remove all the animations, all the blur, all the sliding, all the fading, etc. Makes Windows feel faster. KDE feels like Windows before I strip out all the fancy visuals).

I can have XFCE on just about any linux distro. So then why choose one distro over another? Correct me, linux users. It seems to me that each distro have their own way to access and apply updates, and they each seem to have their own collection of updates. In other words, each distro has its own package manager, and each distro has its repositories. Those repositories are kept updated by a community of people. Some communities are larger and faster to release update than others.

So, my distro hopping has taught me to focus initially on the package manager as a point of comparison to choose a distro. I can always change the desktop environment if I don't like the default, so I should make sure I am comfortable with the distro's package manager, its repository, and its community first and foremost. I think. Still trying to get a feel for this. But I have holes in my understanding which could be filled with an answer to a question, and I'm going to leave that for another post.
>>
>>59874164
didn't read any of this
>>
>>59874164

So here's my question. I'm using an ASRock Z270 motherboard, an i7-7700k, and a GTX 1080. I installed a couple of distros. Neither package manager seemed to have drivers specifically for my hardware. With Windows, I wouldn't use a package manager. Sure, Windows applies some generic drivers initially, much like package manager does. But if I wanted specific drivers for my hardware I would download the driver from the manufacturers website and install it. What happens when the manufacturer doesn't make a version of their drivers for linux? Do linux users then wait for the community to produce a specific driver? In general, how does a linux user go about the job of getting all his hardware working as it should?

Install gentoo and configure the kernel for your hardware.
Also I've noticed with more recent hardware manufacturers that they ignore older versions of Windows and the Windows 10 drivers tend to not work with 8.1 or 7, though Linux generally accepted most of my hardware from the start, even if it is with generic drivers.

Well, so does XFCE. Apart from the default theme looking like dogshit, it has a familiar taskbar, start menu, task manager, window manager.

Only thing I'm not happy with is the UI scaling for HiDPI screens. If they fix this, along with a new default theme, XFCE is pretty much GOAT.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>59914264
I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux operating system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

Mint gets a lot of unwarranted hate because it's popular and works after you install it. My mint computer is fast and awesome... and probably better to use than 99 percent of the arch i3wm vm's posted on /g/
