How difficult do you think it would be to make a quadcopter that is able to learn its environment and navigate to places using the shortest path (without bumping into things). I'm trying to think of some cool summer project ideas and this is number one on my list. I have a solid background in programming and mechanical engineering. What do you guys think?

build a good race quad that flies very stable first, learn how to fly it properly, then you would need to write your own flight controller program and sensors for it to run on the quad, you would need radar, distance sensors

How well would a LiDAR system work?

I might not make it a quadcopter, maybe an RC car. But the copter seems more fun and interesting.

would need to research, the not bumping into anything is the hard part,
i suggest just building a race quad with 5.8Ghz video feed to some cheap fpv goggles, its fun to build and amazing to fly

How difficult was it to build from the ground up? Was is costly?
To do effectively, hard

Is 3D printing a frame for the drone worth it or should I buy a carbon fiber one from a vendor.

You're trying to do what big companies spend millions doing over the summer?
Are you batman? Cause if you're not batman just buy a drone and learn to fly it well.

3D print + Arduino is all you will ever need

race quad?
No, get a FC+ESC combo board if you can, makes it even easier

My main focus is on creating something that can learn it's environment and navigate it. Sort of like a roomba; it doesnt have to be a drone. I might just use an RC car.

>Built a racing quad last year
>Had a blast with it
>One on the JST-SH connectors break
>Have no crimping gear
It's been sitting on the shelf for months, I really need to get back into it.

why didnt you try to bootleg it with some scissors or a box cutter
