First legit third party debotnetting guide I've seen.
There's some redundant steps like deleting services and scheduled tasks after the relevant policy has been disabled but overall seems ok.

Sixty yr old man here not a comp geek. Hear bad things bout windows 10. Spyies the shit as it forms two feet up your pooper. Thinking I don't need W-10. My sisters old toshiba L-top I was using bit dust. It had seven on it. I don't have much money so I bought this lenovo thingy of a laptop (using now). W-10 on it. Of course everything is different than sis's ole Toshi. I was wanting to know if there was stuff you could turn off to stop a lot of the spying or am I just stuck with being a number and an orange pill.

Ran it in a VM with tcpdump.
It's incredibly hard to silence the OS.
Every time I type a letter into the start menu I get TCP output. When I select Windows. And when I type into firefox (search suggestion disabled) before even hitting enter.
Most programs to stop it spying cut down on traffic slightly but it's still talking.

You can get Linux mint on a laptop these days and go through less configuration than debloating windows 10.
>>
I have it on my laptop. Literally the same except for built in f.lux which is handy.
>>

Already went back to 7 ultimate edition. Its super comfy. Nice aero theme. No forced updates. No ads in the start menu.

setting everything back the way I like it took me like 15 minutes tops
>>
"After catching flack for not being very transparent about what sort of data Microsoft collects about your Windows usage, one of the first things you’ll see when you install the update is a prompt with a variety of privacy options. You can choose whether Microsoft is allowed to target ads based on your usage (no thanks), collect diagnostic data (fine by me), know your location, and a few more settings. There also more controls over Windows updates themselves if you’ve been plagued by unwanted reboots or annoying prompts asking you to update."

/g/ should be rejoicing.
>>
>>59859272
>>59859272
Its just like an sp2 or some shit. They labled it "creators update" to appeal to normies that think it will increase their creativity, but most of us just use drugs and what ever tool works. Remember when Mac OS 10 said they were the Operating System for creative professionals? Same marketing scheme, just done by Indians. It adds more spy-on-your-shit tools and advertisments. But I think they will advertise photoshop and paint, or that 3D tool that it already comes with.

It adds tab support for explorer. Something that has existed for decades on other operating systems. They are also adding blueshade, which is a meme. It will have 3d tools for office and picture in picture viewing for wmp. Microsoft edge becomes a ebook reader... its fucking nothing pretty much. Whats cool is when you pair your smart phone to your windows device, it locks the pc when you leave the range. So once it stops listing to your shitty phone calls, its like "WTF mang I cant find my target" and locks the screen.

I'm downloading it right now, in my vm.

Right now you can only update by downloading some tool from mdsn if you have access to a subscription.

Try to be realistic, the majority of people will never manage to get a gpu passtrough working and oob linux is pretty crap performing as a desktop os for your regular gamer.

Same goes for hackintosh, apple laptops are pretty garbage for games and so are their all in ones.
>>
>>59858507
I heard Ryzen had some issues with GPU passthrough. Has this been fixed?
>>
>>59862733
you don't need a gpu passthrough on linux anymore. with things like prime-select or bumblebee you're pretty much set. fancy games work nicely on the higher tier macs too. i mean even so, why wouldn't gamers just stick with win 7? at-least it's easy to disable all the telemetry shit on there.

You're pushing towards retirement, you won't be needing your laptop to do much of anything.
I'm thinking you can get away with switching to a different OS.

If you were a comp geek, it'd be possible to stop the spying at the network level using a firewall. You'll still get spied on when you take your laptop outside though.
It's pretty difficult to get it to stop communicating. The idea is that Microsoft designed your OS, so they can do whatever they want, even if it means overturning long-running standards by ignoring HOSTS file entries.

Anyways, to verify that you're not getting spied on, you'll need hardware separate from your computer to log all of the connections it makes.

For me personally it's because windows 10 (and 8/8.1) has better hidpi support. I remember trying hidpi scaling on win7 and it was kinda bad. I think Win 10 might also have better multi monitor support for different resolutions too.

Also I prefer the "flat meme" interface now. I don't think I can ever go back to aero after using metro for a few years.

W8.1fag here looking in on you guys with horror. It's really mandatory updates no matter what?

I'm probably subjected to my own fair share of telemetry but the shit you guys have to go through essentially beta testing their updates is insane.

Only problem is W8.1 is getting outdated and doesn't seem like it'll cooperate with newer hardware so rip anyone who builds a rig in the next year or two.
>>
>>59868252
Being "unsupported" doesn't mean it won't work, anon. You just won't get any help from the manufacturer or Microsoft if it doesn't.

Pre-builts will have problems but building your own PC, not so much. 7 has been installed on Kabylake and Ryzen.

I haven't used W10 in a while. What does this update do, other than cause frustration and anger? Windows systems usually got better with big updates, despite being terrible. Like XP SP3, Vista SP2, 7 SP1, 8.1. But this seems worse, what gives?

intel hda setting was giving me shit, fixed by disabling NVIDIA HDMI audio and using ac97 and alsa plugin instead.
Don't try being a cheeky lil cunt and passing through a USB DAC by device ID to windows, I tried it and it fucks up with choppy audio probably because of latency or small buffer size?, won't work unless you pass through an entire USB controller and plug it in it.

Passing through an entire PCIE USB controller solves a lot of headaches, because you plug device to it and it just werks. The 4 USB device limit on QEMU sucks, that is the easiest way to circumvent it especially if you try to plug in a product like HTC vive which contains 10 or so devices.
Had no issue passing through a PS3 controller, Mouse, and keyboard by Device ID.
Don't know if there is a similar limit for PCIE, so far only passed a single GPU and USB controller through.

It is a pain to setup initially, using a GUI like virt-manager would be far easier for a beginner but not later on when you want to modify its behaviour, far easier to write a startup script than mess with all the XML bullshit if you want to do something unsupported like circumvent NVIDIA cockblocking HyperV tweaks and throwing error code 43 hissy fit when it detects windows running in a VM.

If you don't have adhd and your hardware supports GPU passthrough then give this guide a shot, I found it quite helpful.

>>59869751
No, if your monitor has 2 input ports you can switch between them manually. Even if it doesn't you can buy a 2 port switch box a la pic related and switch between guest and host. I already do something similar to this (monitor has more than one input).

>Game mode, the one thing I was interested in from this update, appears to do literally nothing
Explain.
>>
>>59877742
A new form of Xbox DVR came with the creator update with integrated recording/streaming. It also includes "game mode," which, according to AMD (as they put out an article to explain this shit because Microshill failed to do so) reallocates CPU and GPU threads to focus on the application that is being focused if it is a game. You can turn this on and off via the 'game bar,' which is the new DVR.
They predict 5-10% FPS increases as a result of using it, but from what I've tested it doesn't appear to change things at all except make the game stutter sometimes.

How much better is the performance?

I have a 2 years old chinese tablet with an Atom that I had to downgrade to Windows 8.1 because performance was so much better.
Edge was particularly bad, much slower than IE11 and IE 11 on Windows 8 at least had a tablet optimized UI.
