Facebook use is strongly declining. You'd know if you browsed it from time to time. Twitter and Instagram are all that matter. Lots of hot girls on Instagram for instance don't have Facebook accounts. Facebook is way too personal, invasive and bloated. People had enough of their relatives on their shit, 16 different privacy settings for 10 groups of people, etc. Its a clusterfuck and it always has been. We already have a plethora of ""open source"" social media platforms. The only thing they're lacking is the content.

Think back to why Google+ failed, despite having massive financial resources to back it and numerical/convenience advantage (gmail addresses) to populate it. It lacked content parity. For normies, many of the celeb pages they followed weren't present in Google+. The groups were missing. Ambiguous concepts like "circles" instead of clearly defined terms such as "friends" used by Facebook discouraged usage. If you added someone to your circle, can they see your posts? Can others see that you've added someone to your circle? What's this "inner circle" and how is it different from regular circle?

Federated social media basically has all the downsides of Google+ but none of the benefits. You have to actively sign up for it. The concept of federated social media completely escapes the normies' grasp, and the sign-up process to many of these platforms don't help the matters much at all. And I haven't even touched the issue of complete dearth of celebs to provide the same content they do on these platforms as they do on Twitter/Facebook.

In short, there's zero incentives and tons of inconveniences to wrest the top dog title away from Facebook. If any of the alternative social medias are going to succeed, they need to find a way to mirror all the content that people visit Facebook for onto their own platforms.
