Never had a single problem with SLI scaling really. Before in Dark souls 3 at 4k I would get 40 ish FPS but it's a constant 60 now both GPUs only at 60-80%. No microstuttering or any of the issues people always complain about when calling SLI a meme.

I ran a socket 939 Opteron 175 @ 3.2ghz which equalled a AM2 6400+ (same exact k8 arcitecture, just am2 had ddr2 memory). Had it from 2006 to late 2009, held up pretty good 'till then but was sure nice to upgrade. Struggled with the newer games.

Had it not been for gaming, I probably could have ran it for years longer.

Is that the only way you can mount your cooler? Only shitty thing about AM sockets if your cooler doesn't account for it.

I like to think I got every last penny out of my 6400, really abused the shit out of that processor. It was so weird to make the switch to Intel / nvidia for the first time. I felt like I was damaging the CPU by closing the CPU bracket.

Totally worth it for the stuff it do now :)

Did you overclock your 6400+?

I could mount my cooler "the right way" if I wanted too, I just never pay attention to that stuff when I put the shit together..

I'll tell you, the old style of pins on the cpu is FAR superior to the lga bullshit intel started. You mess up a single fucking pin in the motherboard socket, and you're probably fucked.
Bend 20 pins on the cpu, just straighten them out..

Here is my old trysty 939 rig ;)

Woah, shit. Watercooled son? I don't have any guts unfortunately but this was my setup. I did overclock the 6400+ but I can't remember the mileage I was able to get from it. I've still got the same monitor.
>>
>>59857744
The Opteron 175 is 2.2ghz stock, only the best 939 chips actually did 3.2ghz, even 3ghz was pretty badass in those days.. Watercooling was a necessity to reach those speeds as voltage had to be pretty high.

But yeah, looks came second to performance back then :P It got quite a few stares and questions at the big lan parties..

I remember being dissapointed that the x2 5000+ and up didn't get released for 939, as the only difference was the ddr2 memory controller. And buying a whole new system for the same arcitecture was out of the question..

Too bad Phenom performed so poorly. They really missed out on the market, even in the hight of 939/940 many chose Pentium 4 based platforms as AMD couldn't keep up with the demand. I guess they weren't prepared for the success of the k8 arcitecture.
Since socket 939 AMD never really had anything to even compete.. Until now that is :)

Is that an Antec case? I had the 1200 model for a while. those internal HD mounts give me ptsd to this day.

Why would I bother when I don't have a modular power supply or a window?
>>
>>59857916
Personally I didn't feel like there was much performance difference between the Phenom and FX series but I thought the Phenoms were pretty reliable. My grandmothers computer is still rocking my old 6400+ but it's showing it's age now especially because she's gotten used to chrome.

That case is unwieldy for sure. Crazy how we can fit all that now in a smaller space without extra BS.

That's an Antec 300. I've had it for ages and it only cost me 60 bucks at the time and I've still got it running as a server cab.

The Phenom2 line was ok, the first Phenoms fucking sucked. They had some kind of arcitectural bug that made them perform like shit and they couldn't overclock worth a damn.
One of my friends bought it when it first came out, and man he wasn't happy :P

When I finally got some money and upgraded in 2009, I went with a Athlon2 x2 250 at first with a cheap ass gigabyte 770 am2+ mobo (did overclock pretty good tho I have to say, it was on air)
Pic related.

However it still struggled with alot of games, so I weren't impressed.

Sold the 250 and got a Phenom2 x4 965 soon after that did 4.1ghz on water, which ran all games pretty well.

Then I took a trip to my home town early 2010, and didn't bring my pc.. Of course I only held out for a week without before I went out and got a cheap used 775 p45 board with a e7500 that overclocked to 4ghz on air, and it curbstomped my x4 965 in pretty much everything.

When I got home I sold the AM2+ stuff and got the i7 platform, haven't touched AMD since.

But I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Zen! Its been too long, AMD.

Nice man. Yeah Zen looks promising. I think it's really competitive and I don't really take sides for AMD or Intel, both have treated me well.

I've got my 7700k at 4.8 right now. Not sure if it's the silicon lottery but I was able to get it to 5.0 GHz no problem at 1.3 vcore, but I might need to do some tweaking. BF1 runs for a bit then I get blue screens. I'm not sure if it's also the XMP on my memory that I need to downclock a bit, right now it's running at 3200.

I have been working on and adding some stuff to my machine recently and today a new cpu cooler was supposed to arrive. I kinda get it. Plus your PSU isn't sitting in your carpet suffocating on dust and other shit forever.

However I'm looking to GET an R5 case so do you like what you had besides the PSU placement?

>Plus your PSU isn't sitting in your carpet suffocating on dust and other shit forever.
Most cases with bottom-mount PSUs have extra mounting holes so you can mount the PSU with the fan pointing up, if you want.

On a scale of 1-10 how distasteful is my 5yr old build.

I'm thinking of toneing it down a bit and ditching the LEDs
(gtx1080 fairly new)
>>
>>59863291
Sorry for the late reply. I'm the anon with the R5 who was considering the top mounted case.

The R5 (with all the HDD bays) is amazing. Shit loads of drive space while not sacrificing on GPU space (I was able to fit the 13" sapphire Fury nitro without removing the middle HDD bays). Supports large could coolers up to 170mm I think. It technically has mounts for radiators too, but then you have to take off the sound dampening panels, defeating the point of the case.

Also I got the windowless version. It's whisper quiet.
>>
>>59864731
Yeah that basically secures the deal on the R5 model for me. Thanks for the mini review. Now I'm just stuck deciding between the Blackout version and Windowless or not.

I'm thinking I'm going to go Non-blackout and Windowed so I can get a sort of black/white aesthetic going since i have a X370 Taichi on the way.

Did you get the blackout or the regular?
>>
>>59864720
Ricer/10. Even without the LEDs, you're cooling your VRMs and ram with water blocks. Why?

And unless you're going for a clean black/silver aesthetic, I would stick with the LEDs. I see some acrylic in there and it would look out of place without LEDs. Maybe get some sort of voltage controller to control just how bright the lights are? Or move to a different color?

Regular with white pcie slot covers and white HDD cages. I wish the blackout edition was available when I bought it honestly. My entire build is a mismatch of silver, white, red, and black.

If I were forced to choose I'd say windowless and blackout. The R5 was meant to be exactly what it is. A plain, unassuming black box thats all about function over form. With the windowless version of the case, the entire side panel is covered in sound dampening. Where as with the window, you lose all that AND introduce the possibility of hearing the window rattle over time.

That's just me though.

I do sort of want the window just for a bit of LED swag. I'll probably go with the blackout edition thought since it's cheaper where I live for whatever reason. And I'm hoping the case lasts for years to come so if I swap mobos it might look sort of mismatched as you mentioned with your build.

Anyways thanks for the input. Hope your quest for your top mounted PSU with stellar soundproofing goes well.

I got the mastercase pro, just because logicalincrements suggested it when I was starting out and I got it first.

But it's good, great air flow and it's nice to be able to remove some of the HDD bays.
>>
>>59865140
I have dreams about getting the maker 5, but it's quite expensive where I live (~$400)
>>
>>59865179

It's quite a large case, that's my own reservation about it. But it's well-built. Where do you live?
>>

I live in hueland, I'm OP by the way, so you can understand why I wanted a larger case

That pc (without some components, and with stock cooler) costed me about 700~800 of today's dollars, in 2013 (when I bought it) it was somewhat cheaper

There is no other reason to water cool VRms or Ram.
What it does it make it impossible to change out ram.

I think the issue with the ASUS board was that they couldn't clock the RAM up past 2400/2666 because of shit BIOS support.

That's probably as stable as he can get his build right now until compatability patches in May.

A work friend just gave me this ram after he bought his 6700k and his motherboard wasn't compatible with it. This motherboard already got patched within the first week to allow me to overclock the ram if I want to but I do not need to.

Have not had any performance problems at all and can't really argue with being given DDR4 ram vs spending $120 on a new set.

Good friend to just give that away. Odd though. Never heard if ram just outright not being supported. High frequency ram sure, but 2400mhz is pretty much the standard.
>>59866249
Not that anon, but no. Purely for placebo or aesthetic. Single tower sinks get zero benefit from a 2nd fan. Only super thick singles (raijentek) or dual tower sinks (noctua nh-d14/15) really benefit from dual fans. Even then it's marginal.

Nice build. What case? Elite 130? Nice to see I'm not the only one who uses SFX PSUs for mini builds. I have the same Silverstone 450w and I'm disappointed honestly. 450w and gold certified but only 3 SATA power plugs? I have an itx server with 5 drives. I'm forced to use molex to SATA adapter. Didn't even think to look before buying because 5 SATA power was pretty much standard on all supplies I ever used up until now.

It overclocked to the gtx1060 cuck limit (2150mhz I think it was) effortlessly on water.. another mhz and it crashes. The jews did this.

I just run it at stock tho, if I cant overclock to the cards actual limit I won't bother. Fuck nvidia.

Will set it up in the matx system again, once my zen shit arrives, but getting rid of it when vega hits probably.

I'm hearing ya. I'm yet to look into unlocking voltage.
I barely hit 55c.
Thinking of waking a peltier plate on mine. (phasechange cooler)
I get the sneaking suspicion there's thermal throttle cuckary going of above 50c. I'll also have to check the board to see if I can solder another six pin to it.
>but getting rid of it when vega hits probably.
I'll hand down mine to my nephew sometime next year. I'm holding out for zen+.
Hopefully by that time another revision of vega should hit, or be close. Ryzen is great as is, but I know there's sooo much more AMD has to offer with zen+.
>>
>>59871838
>Thinking of waking a peltier plate on mine. (phasechange cooler)
Peltier is a thermoelectric element, not phasechange :P
But dont waste your time, they have some sort of limit that inhibits frequencys over 2150mhz. There is no reason for this except they dont want the preformance to get close to a 1070 and steal sales from the more expensives..
Same reason they dont allow SLI on 1060.

Temprature has nothing to do with it. Galax made a card without the limit, and they clocked like mad.
>>
>>59871998
>Peltier is a thermoelectric element
Touche
>hey have some sort of limit that inhibits frequency's* over 2150mhz.
Well shit. Guess I've gotta look harder for software unlocks. Because the record is 8000Mhz on Ln2 for these cards.
There's a fuck ton of performance if you can unlock it.
1070/80's the same?
>>

4chan strips the EXIF data from pictures because back in the old days you could pull someone's GPS coordinates if they posted a cellphone picture on 4chan. As a side effect of this stripping of the EXIF data if your phone saves the orientation information as an EXIF value and not actually rotating the source image.

You can get around this by opening the picture up in any image editing software and resaving the image
