That's exactly what i was planning to do,
but instead of wiping down the laptop,
I will dunk it in some electronics grade
99% isopropyl alcohol in a tub and let it sit
there for a few hours, then wipe it down with a rag.

refurbfag here
Cleaning of everything can be done with some windex and a microfiber cloth, dust remover is blown through the fucker and under the keys to get rid of most dust and debris, light scratches are dealt with using a 50/50 water/acetone mix and a sponge
if its really bad and its worth it to replace a part for the sake of better resale value, buying things cosmetically is important, people leave shit reviews if their laptop is shit, new palmrests or touchpads are common, sometimes new keys if there are some worn out, since those parts are cheap and add a lot of value to the device

For refurbishing your own, clean the bitch up, anything really fucked up should be replaced, possibly upgrade internal components.
My personal T42 is cosmetically and internally refurbed and upgraded, i even modified a heatsink from an R52 to cover the gpu, as well as custom milled brass frame pieces to make an even more rigid frame for the laptop

also new thermal paste, fresh Windows with all the drivers (probably has a COA sticker) so the illiterate buyer doesnt have an excuse to return it - that is if you wanna sell it, new hinges if the old ones are really really loose, and generally make sure everything werks.
>>
>>59850114
Trust me, I know what I'm doing.

Nah, I'm not going to sell the thinkpad, I just don't want to get jewed by some refurber.
>>
>>59850166
with a laptop its less likely you'd see plastic erode as much as some of it may get brittle, it can also damage the foam around things like the heatsink and fan
it would be better in the long run to spend the hour or so taking it apart and cleaning it, you'd probably get it cleaner anyway
>>
>>59850204
Ill just remove the foam and get replacement foam pads.
Although, all I need to wash is the outer shell, so I could
do it with soap and water which is much cheaper and easier.
Thanks for the heads up anon.

>acetone
>windex
I don't want my thinkpad covered in toxins though.
But thanks for the guide, I never knew how to get scratches out of the lid, I will try and find something non-toxic that can replace the acetone.
>>
>>59850540
acetone isnt toxic (by epa standards at least), its an organic compound thats produced in your own body in small amounts
the amounts used in cleaning wont harm you through skin contact
especially not normal nail polish remover, straight up pure acetone might be a bit excessive though

its good for cleaning scratches and scuffs because it erodes plastic, so definitely dont use it with paper towels because the paper fibers will stick to the plastic

The new keyboard is better simply because it doesn't flex like hell.
You can put a 45w quad core but be ready to get the bigger heatsink for the nvidia igpu iirc.
Battery whitelist can be removed with bios mod.
AC WiFi can be used but you need to flash the bios and is more complicated but doable.
Also where are you seeing a t430 with a 2k mod and the quad core x230.

wifi ac is not really that pratical yet so no worries
its from a china thinkpad forum. they still accept orders, but only strictly in china. I'm just going to ask a friend who lives there to get one for me. both the x230 and t430 has 2k panel. If HD4000 is enough for my work, then I might get the x230 for portability...
>>
>>59852422
>battery whitelist? there are some better battery out there?
The *30 series can only use original batteries.

>its from a china thinkpad forum
you mean the 51nb gois?

AFAIK the panel mods are really shit, literally used glue on the panels and the screens were kinda shit. You'd be better off ordering only the kit and doing the mod yourself with a good screen.

Also never heard about the x230 quadcore, would love to get one with the fhd ips mod.

The elitebook 2570p can use quadcore cpus, if you care about that.
>>
>>59852422
>cooling
Good luck, I'm skeptical of there being a quick fix. Some older models benefit a bit from drilling holes in the case under the fan but I don't know that it would be as helpful on those models. An external fan to go over the vent might also help though everyone seems to have a different experience with those and they're not too portable.

>battery
https://github.com/hamishcoleman/thinkpad-ec
Clearing the battery whitelist isn't too hard.

Personally I'd rather get something that came with those kinds of specs out of the factory rather than risk it with someone else's mods, it kind of invalidates the reliability selling point of those models anyway though it's up to you. Might be an idea to look at how much it would cost you to spec out a T440p or X240 though.

Nevermind, it is chink shit.

Lenovo you fucks, why are you making it so hard for me to buy a battery.
>>
>>59858505
It's the keyboard mate. The connector becomes loose, somehow. I've posted about it here before. The keys will work of you out pressure on the connector, but as soon as you lift off the pressure, it will stop working again. I had to replace 2 keyboards due to this. I have taken to not touching the connector at all now, just taped it up. A new keyboard generally fixes this, I don't know if the connections are tighter or something. Maybe it's an issue with the connector itself, but there's no easy way of replacing the connector.

If portability is not a big priority: T520 or W520 with a 1080p display, will cost around $500 with upgrades.
If portability is needed: X220 or X200 with a IPS display (google for the specific part numbers for the IPS displays for these laptops), will cost around $300 to $400 with upgrades.

I suggest you get a new genuine keyboard and new genuine battery for you new thinkpad to make it last a lot longer.

Thanks for the answers. Pretty insane to put an unlocked CPU in a laptop and charge for the chance to overclock, which I almost guarantee less than 10 T530 owners ever did when it was new.

Also, I heard that when it was new the X220 and X230 trackpads were really inaccurate, jittery and also had a problem with choppy movement. Have the latest drivers ironed out these issues?
>>
>>59859667
Not the same anon, but the trackpad on my X230 was pretty mediocre. Ended up getting used to trackpoint and never looked back.

The cpus in the x220 and t420 are hyperthreaded though, so they virtualy act as a quad core with 4 threads. To be honest, the T440p is an odd model just because, as far as I know, it's the only 14" model with a socketted CPU out of the newer generations. The only usual complaint that applies for it is maybe durability, but otherwise, on paper, the specs look pretty worthwhile.

Got myself a T43 today. Impressed with the keyboard quality. My firrst thinkpad ever. Amazaed it can play 1080p vids just well.
>>

I'm a computer science student and I'm doing a web dev focused internship. So basically I just need a Linux machine and that's about it.
>>
>>59869076
Yikes, didn't realize the resolution was that bad. Any alternatives for that?
>>
>>59848374
I can have t460p with i5/8/198ssd or t450 eith i7/16/500ssd. Whats the better deal?
>>
>>59870168
don't you know it's 1440p now?
>>
>>59870921
i think it's worth it, i got a 9 cell battery and according to hwmonitor the thing has a wear level of 17%. Even with that my x220 still gets 11hs 30mins of battery time.
>>
x220 vs x230. Which is worth it? x230 seems like the way to go because of the newer processor for very little extra cost. Is there something I'm missing?
>>
>>59872893
>new in box
>x220
100%, those are super rare

Thanks, just wanted to update my post.

Gonna try and offer them a price, given that I would want to change the HDD.

Looks like it's a company that recycles old tech and sells them on. In this case, these were unopened boxes of the X220 that they want to shift.

The model number is 4290-29G but I'm not getting anythign else other than the i5 2520M, 4GB RAM and 320GB HDD.

I suppose having an original, unused battery pack will be a huge bonus.
>>
How much battery life do you guys get out of a 6 cell battery on the T420? I only get a maximum of 3.5 hours, that too on power saver and I feel that it is a lot less than what other people get. On high performance or balanced, he battery runs for 2 hours total, which again feels pretty terrible? Is something wrong with my computer /g/?
>>
>>59873389
A battery pack from that long ago' should have degraded too a certain extent, right?
>>
>>59850127
lmao, story behind that pic?
>>
>>59873425
It will likely be dead.

Li-ion batteries should never get completely drained.
>>
>>59873486
>>59873425

Well shit. I guess I'll have to look for another battery. Do they even sell any Lenovo made batteries for the X220 still or should I just got the a chink battery?
>>
>>59871037
The touch mouse buttons for the trackpoint are the only serious issue.

But I assume you replaced those as well, when you replaced the trackpad?
>>
>>59873486
Depends on the how the complex the charging circuit is afaik but yeah, you're most likely right. I wonder what voltages the cells reached after that much time, lmao.
>>
>>59873497
You should get a cheap 3rd party battery anyways.
Why pay extra just for a brand name?

I bought a Yanec battery for my 420 and it's perfect.

The circuitry stops you from draining the battery in normal use.
It just tells you it's "empty" when it still has about 10% charge left.

But in storage the battery (slowly) drains on its own and no circuit can prevent that.
It's why you should never store "empty" Li-ion batteries, best is around 70%.

X220 with i7 has USB 3. i5 models don't.
>>
>>59848374
is it a good idea to get a thinkpad like a t420 if I will probably not take it outside? I just want a cheap machine to watch muh animu and shitpost
>>

except, you know, the protection circuit.

Is it possible to put a 1440p screen with more candela in a T460s? I would like to use it outside.

actually, I'm wrong, I have misunderstood. anyway, li-on is a wild beast, and I'm forever learning about them. very complex subject.

here's a nice read (and website) I found:

Acetone isn't toxic. You can burn it for energy just fine. It even has dedicated metabolic pathways.
>>
First time buyer here. I just got a used R500 a few days ago and it's ass.
Can't install the OS I want, and cramming libreboot on it involves hours of work, complete disassembly and spending more on electrical equipment than what I spent on the laptop in the first place.

Question is, what TP should I get if I want liberty and no CIA spying?
>>
>>59854377
Yes, with a mod that isn't for the faint of heart
>>

libreboot an x220

I meant x200. x220 is coming soon though apparently.

Is it a good idea to get a T42, with a ram upgrade to run Tails?

I don't trust Intel Core anymore.
>>
I have a 9.5 mm Cd drive caddy, and I was gonna use it in my t420, it looks like it fits, but is it gonna be a secure enough fit for daily use? I'm not using the Cd drive cover, I don't have the ssd for test yet though.
>>
Got a T530 with a 2.6 GHz i5, nvidia nvs 5400 GPU, 1600x900 display, 320GB HDD, and a 9-cell for $290 including shipping. Did I at least not get jewed? Bought it because a family member needed a $300 laptop that could play shit like GTA5 and WoW at decent enough settings, and didn't want an HP or Acer shittop.

By "IBM thinkpad" you mean IBM made or IBM logo?
If IBM made then I'd probably get T43 because it was the last one, I like owning "last one" laptops on various arbitrary categories.

If IBM logo then I'd get an AFFS 1600x1200 T60p and put T61 motherboard inside there

Any thinkpads have a good enough display for photo editing? Pops is amateur photographer and wants to get a laptop. I recommended he get a cheap macbook but if I can find a decent alternative I'd rather convert him to thinkpads.
>>
>>59876810
I wouldn't get a thinkpad if I needed a nice screen
>>
>>59876755
do you use mouse, trackpoint, or trackpad?
>>
>>59876869
Oh I should have specified, this happens when I use a mouse. Doesn't happen with the clit or trackpad. That's why I'm thinking it's a hardware issue. Actually I could probably just get a new mouse and see if it still happens, my current one is ancient and it's flown around a lot when I clumsily stumble out of my bed and trip on the wire. Which is why I suspect the mouse is pretty busted
>>
>>59876937
In that case:
get a 1$ mouse and plug it in. not really helpful I know. also congrats you now have a spare mouse.

I assume you mean PS2 port. if USB, switch it to another USB port, obviously.

or if you're running linux you could try and do some port testing.
>>
T420 gets really hot on dock. I'm guessing that chunk with the power button and eject mechanism blocks ventilation from the left side of the laptop. Any advice?
>>
>>59876420
>AFFS 1600x1200 T60p and put T61 motherboard inside there
I have a spare T61, will do a Fankenpad if I have themoney, but tell me, why not simply get a T61 and install the AFFS screen of the T60? Would seem more reasonable, if it is possible.
>>
>>59877599
Assuming you meant installing the screen in the T61, it's not possible because there aren't any 15" 4:3 T61s. There are 14" 4:3, 14" 16:10, and 15" 16:10 models only. The 15" 4:3 T60 uses the same motherboard as the smaller 14" 4:3 models, just with a small extension board to close the gap, and 14" 4:3 T61 motherboards are almost identical, so it's easy to swap one in.

Thinkpad x220 running linux if it is software rather than hardware controlled.

Any useful tips for a new ThinkPad user? I bought a X220 and an IPS screen mod. I read OP but I'm wondering if I'm missing anything to get the best experience. I intend to use it for basic use, light gaming and drawing (thus the screen mod).

Easter sale on the thinkpad website.

What's the difference between:

>512 SSD SATA3 OPAL 2.0
They cost the same

Yes, I have an X200 tablet with 8GB.

But I've read it can potentially have up to 16GB, although I'm not sure if that works without any tweaking.

Just got a T530 with an i7-3520M+8GB and the HD+ display for $200, couple of small cracks. Going to add an SSD in before I use it.

First thinkpad, want it to run linux on as a portable workstation type thing.
