The reason why imageboards are different to such communities it's anonymity and all the benefits that come from it. Sometimes it's okay to call someone fag if they act retarded. People might get pissed for a little bit, but they will quickly forget and carry on. With namefaging you can't do this, especially if code of conduct is in place. You will get banned, they will accuse you of *ism, ban you and demand public apology with possible monetary compensation.

SUMMARY in case youre too lazy to scroll up

Appleman didn't bother to change credentials on the server's control panel so when he requested a password reset Kalyx got the email instead of him. Realizing he had access to the server's control panel, Kalyx decided to be a dick and erase the server entirely, thinking appleman could just restore it from back ups. Appleman in a remarkable feat of stupidity kept lainchan's back ups on the same server it was hosted on, so those got nuked at the same time as the rest of the site.
