I'm a first year engineering student. Should I buy a Lenovo X1?
Very comfy. I say yes.
I want a Gen5 but they're too expensive for me right now. Just gonna wait until they drop

OP said X1, not X1 Carbon. X1 can be < $500 used.

In 1 year you probably would do anything besides Word or Power Point. Buy a old one.Or you can buy expensive new one.
Anyway, I have both and old TP and a new Lenovo TP and the old keyboard feels really good, and the trackpoint too, in the new ones, keyboard doesn't feel bad but doesn't feel good either, it's just okay. Trackpoint sometimes feel a bit better than in the older models IMO. But for the price I pay for the Lenovo one, I doesn't feel that it worth it desu.
Talking about processor speed obviously newer ones will be faster but old ones still fast enough for today standards.
Conclusion: Buy an old model or a New model if you want faster processor and don't mind about money. (They are really overpriced on lenovo page!)
Tip: Buy a used one.
Also: once you learn how to use properly the trackpoint you can't go back. It's the comfiest thing in the world.
I don't need a mouse anymore, I even can play games with it.

>>59829113
legendarily so
>>59829525
It's all about battery life and new ports like USB C for the new ones also better screens
>>59829159
i got the x1 hybrid for 400 CAD. in 2012.

why no love for gen2? it's awesome.

*less than 900

just get a macbook like a normal person.

Listen to this anon
>>59829120
fucken this
No, no matter how much you spend it will shit the bed when doing simulations or working with assemblies with lots of parts. Get something cheap and have a desktop that can do what you need.
>>59834371
agreed. I'd even go so far as to say no laptop at all, take your notes with pen and paper for best retention, and then do work that requires a computer on your desktop.
All the carbons are shit tier laptops. That shit is flimsy as FUCK. I work in IT surplus and we get them sometimes and after two years expect the shitty trackpad and keys to be shiny, the plastics to be warped and buckled and the hinge to creak. These things are made too thin and the material is weak.
Why doesn't Lenovo use glass on the trackpad like HP and Apple? Fuck that chinese garbage. Also take a look inside one of these, there are like 20 connections to the motherboard, terrible engineering.

Might as well get the X1 Yoga for the OLED or the T470 for the durability.
X1 Carbon is a meme, unless you're a cripple or a manlet who can't carry more than 2 lb at a time.
>>59829033
You should look at the XPS-15 and XPS-13.
>>59829033
go for it, I regret not buying one. I bought a XPS 13 FHD instead. The keyboard on the thinkpads are much better. Though I bought the XPS 13 for $880 on sale, so there's that.
>>59834946
This is exactly the way I do things. I never organize or even read my class notes, but I still take them down into a notebook as an aid to retention. I'm a computer science major and I only have a desktop.
>>59829120
I would gild u if I were on reddit, feel free to msg me at /u/pixelated_fudge, good sir
>>59832080
The keyboard layout is complete garbage and that is the primary interface between my mind and the computer. There's a reason they changed it back on the 3rd gen.

> X1 Carbon is a meme
You apparently do not know what meme means...
Maybe you mean to say the X1 Carbon is a different compromise in terms of power/weight/battery life than the T470 is, one which most users will find a disadvantage in most mobile computing situations.
Memes are social appraisals/observations that are new and novel -- ideas that once a culture has developed or advanced to -- forever change their perceptions and perspective about a certain topic or social construct.
The trade-offs of battery life vs portability are a very familiar consideration for consumers to make since well...the invention of the battery. Calling this century old decision of battery powered consumerism a "meme" just illustrates that you failed 5th grade English.

I had it at my job; it was flimsy compared to my old T60, the power button was sticky, adaptive function key row purely a meme, can't connect shit without adapters and/or external powered dock but the display was top notch, as was autonomy and light weight
