https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/apr/09/uk-tourists-to-us-may-get-asked-to-hand-in-passwords-or-be-denied-entry

>British travellers to the United States face the uncomfortable choice of handing over personal information, including social media passwords and mobile phone contacts, or running the risk of being denied entry to the country, under a new “extreme vetting” policy being considered by the Trump administration.

>Tourists from the UK and other US allies including Germany and France, could be forced to reveal personal data, as well as disclose financial information and face detailed ideological questioning, according to Trump administration officials quoted by the Wall Street Journal. While US citizens have established rights against unlawful searches at the border, the extent to which foreign travellers can resist requests to hand over personal information is unclear.

This law is stupid, as one could make fake accounts, or have hidden ones. Plus, what are you going to find? What if they don't have accounts? I don't, except for a Twitter that I use to complain to companies.

Well as someone who doesn't live in the U.S. and has no intentions of going there for a holiday I couldn't care less.

Is the policy completely fucked up? Of course, but it'll only affect people who actually want to hurt your country or people stupid enough to want to visit the most boring, uninteresting country on the planet for their holidays.

A) You have to do this if asked at essentially any border
B) It's done in an exceedingly small amount of cases
C) It doesn't just apply to foreign nationals of US allies but any country where the person entering is not a US Citizen
D) The British government makes it a separate crime to not provide your password to law enforcement and you can go to jail for contempt on not providing a password whereas the US would just deny you entry and send you home

They ask to log into your machine. Once they have your login they take your device to the back room where they search every image, and video files. They read all your locally saved emails, and if it is a cellphone they read all your text messages. They also write down all internet handles they can see in your browsing history or on your local machine. This is effectively the same. If you protect yourself against having this information on your machine, you can protect yourself from the social media password nonsense just as easily.

>>59823851
I am Chilean, but I do indeed live in Britain. More background, if you're interested:
>Chile only has lager beer
The UK is amazing for this. I am not a fan of American beer in general, unless we're talking about anything of the sorts of coors, bud, miller, etc.
>American food is amazing
And cheap too. I can't fucking believe it. It makes so much sense why you see so many giant people there. Everytime I land on an airport I go "welp, that's the first landwhale already". Crazy, crazy stuff!
>Where do you go
Main cities for now. Wife and I have been to NYC, LA, Orlando, SF, Chicago, etc. I really would like to visit friends in other places like Washington, Portland and Michigan. People I met on the internet when I was a teen and still in touch with today.
Don't forget about theme parks. We love that shit, I grew up in a country when dreams are just dreams. The inner child in me loves it.
>>

>Good, Brits are 80% mudslimes now.

I think you are confusing them with France.

Brits have hindus, not muslims, and it is just London that has half the city full of them. The other cities only have a small local pedophile slavery ring worth of Asians.
>>
>>59823323
What would happen in a case like this if you don't use social gaydia? Then it's just no by deafult?
>>
That's interesting, since if you're there on business your passworded files will be company secrets, and the TSA won't actually have security clearance to see it.
>>
>>59823939
American people are amazing. I just hope you don't let politics keep ruining your reputation further.

Anywhere in the world they have an expression for "stupid/damn Americans", but this is very ignorant. American people don't make shitty decisions. Not on a big scale.

>>
>>59823947
I like in the U.K. I wish you were correct but no, there are large parts of the country where Pakistani immigrants and the families they've raised here are the majority, I don't mind, Pakistan is probably one of the more passable Islamic countries, almost all the Pakistani Muslims I've met are moderate, many of whom have been here 50+ years.

Still, you do here shit about Pakistani rape gangs going after young British girls and police forces refusing to do shit about it out of fear of losing their jobs due to 'racism', our country has problems and it definitely seems to stem from our governments inability to take a sensible stance on religious discrimination.

When exactly does it go from being racist to just looking at the facts? I hope my country sorts it shit out, I don't mind Islam, I do mind when shit like this happens though.

>look through people's computers to find "illegal" stuff

Now if someone had illegal content, why would he carry it with him through the customs instead of downloading it from the internet at his destination?
I understand this isn't just for looking for illegal files, but that's one of the big reasons they did it before and are still doing it.

Your country is huuuuuuge (German here). Huge mountains, desert, giant forest, lakes, etc.

We might seem all organic here but I have never seen such big stretches of untouched nature than I have in the US. It's gorgeous really.

And I'm politically very neutral and as long as you don't bring it up (I try not to because American politic is very divisive even without foreigners) people are very nice, much more outgoing than in a lot of European countries I've seen.

Well yes I didn't really talk to people in the big cities because those are filled with tourist stuff and I don't think too many people are native to these cities anyway (just from an outsider perspective).

LA has some cool tourist areas, obviously hollywood and stuff, but outside of that it seemed just like a gigantic area of urban and suburban houses with not much to see unless you live there. Same with NYC, you just wander around the skyscrapers for a few days until you've seen them all, watch a broadway show or two and pack your stuff.

I'm more impressed by the country as a whole that a few meme cities. It doesn't necessarily have much culture (in terms of sightseeing) but more of a way of life that you can experience if you travel through the US. It might seem strange but I rarely felt not welcome there.

Yeah. As much as I hate paying part of my taxes for unemployment benefits for lazy fucks, at least I can walk around without getting jumped or shouted at by homeless weirdos.

tbf alot of them are tourists. So that's not necessarily a bad thing. Considering that almost 80% of America is of European descent there being that many people in Disney that aren't European-related just means foreigners from abroad are coming in by the plane loads.

Just go to Canada it's similar but arguably freer.
>>
>>59828818

As an American that has spent a lot of time in Canada, it's not even remotely freer. They just have a smaller population, and the government has less power because they have a lot less revenue to exert their will over the citizenry with.

It doesn't stop them from trying.

Those people all choose to live that way.

It's incredibly easy to survive as a homeless person in the United States. Because there is no significant pressure for them to get their shit together, and they aren't dying, they just accumulate in urban centers.

It's disgusting, and as an American I'm equally appalled.

certainly it's just a ruse and they have the ability to simply look into your social media accounts even without your password

What's the problem? Are you cucks hiding something?
>>
>>59823323
Why do I care if it's hard for britbongs to come over here?
>>
>>59823323
It'll never happen, the plausible deniability is too strong. You can say "Oh, they just won't let in people who claim to not have social media" but what counts? Everyone's expected to have Facebook? Okay... What about Instagram? WhatsApp? Telegram? Signal? Tox? Where does it end? (Yes, I am aware that many of these don't reveal anything useful even with the password, they're just examples).

And that's before you get into issues like
>The enormous security risk that handing over all the tools for identity fraud is
>The fact that some of these platforms are also payment systems in some sense
>Password managers making it literally impossible
>Two factor authentication making it literally impossible
>Biometrics making it literally impossible

A significant percentage of the population simply couldn't comply with this even if they wanted to. It's an absurd hypothetical being reported as a serious consideration to drive clicks.
>>
>>59823323
So what? Encrypt all your sensitive files with AES-256 and store them in a ext4 partition. Use grub to remove linux from boot order, boot from windows. Watch amerifats browse through your shit with nothing to see.

If they require passwords simply deny having any social media accounts. What are these motherfuckers supposed to do? Set your account to private and thats the end of it. They cant deny entrance to someone just because of no social media. If they require any fucking emails, just give them a fake email. What the fuck can they do? They cannot search for your email.

Oh, they also want o browse your cellphone. Factory reset it, save it to sd card, then save it to an ext4 partition. Problem fucking solved.
>>
>>59831361
>What are these motherfuckers supposed to do?
Deny you entrance lol.
>They cant deny entrance to someone just because of no social media
Yeah they can, if you have a bunch of wiped electronics and claim to have no accounts they can deem that suspicious.

I actually don't have any social media accounts.

Actually worried they won't believe me and send me to Gitmo.
>>
>>59831472
So, basically, they can deny me.entrance because I have no social media and "thats suspicious." and because my laptop doesnt have enough user data. I can claim its a new laptop?

How can a country be so fucking shit? You guys deserved the 2 planes into your towers.

i've spent the last ~20 years travelling on business on every continent except antarctica and i have never been asked this

The UK will put a non-UK citizen in jail for not providing a password?
>>
>>59831587
In theory, yes. The law exists, but it's hardly even used (thank fuck).
The idea is basically so if the cops are watching some pedo and suspect them of having whole TBs of child porn, they won't have to just drop the case because mr pedo was clever enough to encrypt his drives.

Essentially it's only meant to be used as extra punishment for people effectively destroying evidence, which may or may not help incriminate others.
The problem is the wording of the law is so vague that in theory it could be used against anyone doing anything with little hard evidence to prove they actually did anything wrong at all.

The US does the same thing for citizens, and will stick you in jail until you provide passwords but I don't get how they could do it to non-citizen.
>>
>>59831821

If you refuse to give up your accounts, they'll take a picture of you and run it through a facial recognition database. If you've ever been on facebook, it will find you.
