My GTX 660 died on me without warning couple days ago, started up a game and PC crashed, then I smelt and saw the smoke.

Pulled it apart and could see no damage but one of the capacitors stunk, so I assume it was that.

Now I am stuck on Intel graphics till I can upgrade. Not that there are many games worth playing that I am unable to play so all good I guess.

If it was the monitor, your screenshots would look normal, since there's nothing wrong with the actual display output.

This is probably the fault of some other component, although I'm not sure what it could be.
Taking >>59821264 into account, I would first recommend plugging your monitor directly into your motherboard to test out if it really is a video card issue.
