I've got a shit ton of scrap electronics from a company recently. They all use Atmel XMEGA microcontrollers, so I've been harvesting them in different ways to see what works best. Just recently set one up on an adapter board and got it to connect to Atmel Studio, and I was able to program it and prove that my method of removing them isn't destroying them, so it looks like I'll have a pretty good supply of microcontrollers for free now. I'll post some pics later if anyone is interested.

They have an IRC which is pretty active though.

I'm currently writing a cyberpunk short story but I'm having trouble making a certain key story component plausible.
In the story, this happens:
The world's third largest aviation megacorp maintains an lightly regulated, hypercapitalist business plan that involves selling more jet airliner seats than they actually have. This process is wholly legal thanks to insurmountable, over-the-table campaign contributions. This business plan usually works out well, thanks in no small part with government collusion that frequently causes customers to miss and/or be late for commercial and/or recreational air transportation. But then the situation backfires when, in order to squeeze extra money out of the business model, the megacorp tries to squeeze their own wageslaves onto a crowded flight. Despite the megacorp's offer of several hundred dollar's worth of megacorp-backed travel credits, none of the passengers want to leave. In order to solve this crisis, the megacorp requests the services of paid-off government musclemen to bump off an Asian salaryman. However, due to the interconnected nature of the near-future, internet-like Matrix, the story goes viral like a case of lab-grown Ebola substitute. The story then follows the hour-by-hour life of a Public Relations Joeboy for the megacorp as she tries to contain a situation far above her paygrade.

>What would be suitable as a tape base or as magnetic material? The Totsuko engineers had to start from scratch. Assuming that any magnetic powder substance would do, they first tried an OP magnet, which had been invented by Dr. Yogoro Kato of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Ibuka obtained a stick-shaped piece of this material, and Kihara ground it to powder in a mortar for an hour or so. They agreed to coat this powder on an 8mm wide slip of leftover print-out paper from the Hell Schreiber telegraphic machine. "But how can we coat it?," they asked themselves. After thinking about it long and hard, they kneaded cooked rice into a paste and applied the powder onto the paper with the rice paste.

This, my friends, is the early days of a Japanese megacorp.

Start by building simple circuits like switches etc. Find schematics for things online and build them. Have patience while you develop your soldering skills. It's rewarding if you can make something useful even if it's simple. I made a little switch box to change between signal from my pc audio interface and an aux input to my monitors complete with a volume pot. Still pretty happy with my solution a few years on.

I guess I do? Massive desk in the corner for my PC with 3 monitors arranged on different sized pedestals with the CRT on the highest. Lots of power cables trailing across the floor, pots full of dongles and screwdrivers, and shelves stuffed full of cassettes, manga, and figurines. Medium sized chest of drawers with a vinyl hi-fi setup on top of it, and a small wardrobe with DVD stacks and camera stuff on top of that.

It's what the people in the 80's and early 90's thought the future would be like. Megacorps shitting over everyone, even nations. A select group of somewhat tech-literate people stick it to the man by building their own PC's and taking up hacking as a hobby. That's the gist of it at least.

So? I'm not directly saying it's a bad thing that rich people get things made for rich people. That's just how it works. Most normal people have no use for those kind of things. I'm not bored and able to spend money like it's second nature, I have different values.

As for trans-human technology, that oversteps certain moral standards for me, especially when it's pretty much old elites who basically want to become living Gods of this Earth until they go insane from long life. You can only imagine the kind of fucked up things a 0.1% thinks up when he has nothing to do but meddle and cultivate materials.

Unironically thank you for making me hate cyberpunk, it was time for me to grow out of the meme. Cyberpunk societies are just shitholes, most likely a big shill actually. You know, making us enjoy the aesthetic of totalitarianism and depression, and that's how they keep the common man from progressing. I know I sound like a retard but I think you get my point. Societies should be efficient, clean and orderly. We are slowly edging into the real cyberpunk era that they have been preparing us for for a while. By the time people realize aesthetics have no real value, it'll be too late. Mark my words.

My main personal issue, aside from blatant repurposing of scenes from the 1995 film, was how ScarJo couldn't hold a pistol properly to save her life. She limpwristed it the entire time.

Aside from that, they replaced every firearm with the cheapest thing they could pass off as similar, got basic designs wrong seemingly on purpose, and fucked up 90% of the plot. It's certainly a looker, but it's got nothing upstairs, nothing to think about, and nothing worth keeping it around for.

Interesting theory. I don't think most people are affected by that conditioning though, because a lot of the mainstream cyberpunk appeal has been the cyber aspect over everything else. Also, rainy, neon nights, which doesn't necessarily scream "punk". Those people remember cyberpunk for its looks. Though it makes sense as a ploy certain companies may have used to attempt to make us associate "punk" aspects with the desirable aspects of the "cyber" part.

But people who truly like the whole genre will like it not in terms of just the aesthetics, but of the themes of attempting to rise above the totalitarian regime. Ultimately it's about things like rebellion, and a search for a better reality, while dealing with the current. It's also often about existentialism. I would say "true" cyberpunk works get into this and in fact inform those who dive into it, rather than pacify them.

Those with a casual interest will be in it for the exotic aesthetic. Those who have a deep interest are in it for the meaning it imparts on our life, role, and existence within society.

Admittedly though there are people who like gritty aesthetics even in real life, and I would say those people don't have necessarily good taste.

Some cyberpunk writers, namely Gibson, also hold this view. They try to warn of the future and are dubmfounded why anyone would want to live in it.

I guess some just use the situation to prepare themselves so it's not as foreign when cybershit hits the fan. Others are plain nihilist so a shittier world is a plus.

Start by removing existing information wherever you can, including any alternative personalities. Usually forums don't have an option to remove your account, but going a step further and contacting mods can solve this. Social networks due to wide criticism have made it possible to turn off accounts, use that.

Even when you have removed the accounts you still have to deal with indexed information that exists outside, like on search engines. For google any legit change of information can be used as a reason to remove the index or update it. Use this page for that:
