The only advice I'll give you is to never login to anything unless you are okay with a third party possibly hijacking your account.

I'm too poor for mobile data on my phone so I use public hotspots alot in Australia.

Library ones are the best, no limit and don't block alot of stuff. Business ones are worse and some have a time limit. 24/7 gyms usually have good wifi that's always on.

I already spend $50 USD/mo. for high-speed internet at home. I don't know how people afford $40-60/mo. for smartphone data plans.

Would public hotspots be just as safe, if not safer? A few of the ones near me claim I'm thousands of miles away from my actual location.

Do you just park outside McDonalds or somewhere and look for a network name that has "McDonalds" in it? You don't need a password or something?

Pass your WiFi adapter to a Virtual Machine that is spoofing the WiFi MAC address and sending all traffic through an encrypted VPN.
Use the VM as your gateway from the host.
This keeps your traffic secure, and stops people from attacking your host OS directly.
