This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to produce a fine mechanical watch.

Hi there.

You asked for opinions on your recent purchase. The gentlemen of /wt/ replied in one unanimous voice that it is shit. We are not required to show you a watch you like in order for this to be true. You bought a real piece of dogshit and we all hate it. Further, it is unlikely that someone who would purchase that watch would like any watch that is actually nice, so we will probably be unable to show you something you find agreeable.

Now, please be silent if you are not going to contribute to the discussion.

Thank you.

It's such a shame too. It has potential to be good.

>Well machined, smooth sweeping case, no clear cuts

I mean all they need to do is;
>Drop the polished crown, it looks fucking stupid
>Remove internal chapter ring
>Use typical diver dial
>Use 10 minute grading on dial, not 15 minute
>Drop the hands in favour of broader, more visible style. Seconds hand can stay.

And then, MAYBE, it wouldn't be complete dogshite

I make $5k a month and have a couple of $2k Swiss watches but they are both pilot-type designs.

When I was looking for a diver recently I went with a Mako II though because I could not find anything I liked better. Whatever Orient uses for mineral crystals is kind of crap, though, in comparison to Seiko's stuff (or is it the same?).
>>
>>59816435
The mako uses a Mineral crystal, whereas Seiko use their own "Hardlex" composition. Which is slightly superior to Mineral crystals, but nowhere near comprable to Sapphire.
>>
>>59816481

My personal experience tells me it is superior to Orient's formula, but Hardlex is a brand name for a type of mineral crystal.

you can find them without "sports" on the dial, i believe, but those five features are not optional.

What is the classiest Seiko 5 that I can buy for either exactly $100 or slightly under that?

The SNKL23 which is what I am posting in my picture has been discontinued. I don't know what to get now.

I am not looking for utility, if I were I would just get the snk809. I am looking for something within the seiko 5 line that can match this level of elegance on a fairly inexpensive piece

I bought a timegrapher so I could regulate my own watches and usually gravitate towards production mechanical movements with very high inherent accuracy.

I try to regulate all my watches as close to +0s/d as possible, and if not possible then I get them to run slightly fast rather than slow so they can be corrected easily by pulling the crown for a few seconds every few days.

It's like sports cars. I mean sure, they look cool, but you would have to be a giant massive douche to actually own or drive one. Watches are for boring uninteresting mid-35ers, I've never seen anyone cool wear them, expecially those silver 'old businessman' ones that makes anyone who wears them look like a complete lamer and 100% less cooler. Out of curiosity, what's the cheapest Moon-rated Speedmaster, current or vintage? What's the cheapest way to get a MOTFM watch besides just getting the Bulova remake?
>>
>>59825895
Wait for one to pop off for 2400usd..That's about as low as you'll pay. But most people into watches will tell you time and time again, buy the seller not the watch. You'll wish you spent 200 more when you get that beat up shitter
>>
>>59825895
Check Chrono24. You can get a MOTFM for around $3000 for a good one. Vintage makes prices go up.

If you want a cool Swiss watch that has history in spaceflight you can also check out the Rolex GMT-Master, Fortis Cosmonaut, and Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute.

Other watches have been to space too but these are the most notable ones for someone looking into Swiss luxury pieces. The Breitling and Rolex models especially are going to be going up dramatically in value over time because of how low their production numbers are relative to demand, so if you're in to collecting they might be a good choice.

>we'd have cheap MAN ON THE FUCKING MOON Poljot Strelas

The German Strelas you can buy today have about as much to do with the watch that went to space as the fake chinese built speedmaster one anon posted a couple of threads ago has to do with the moonwatch. We'd have nothing of the sort.

>>59826470
There are still plenty vintage Strelas floating around at an affordable price. And at least the German remake has a Poljot movement inside.

Aside from Strela and Sturmanskie, pretty much whatever they had.

>>59826120
Only about two Vostoks went to space, one being this century.

WW2 German Combat Divers Panerai watches.

Quick reminder that wearing a diving watch when you're not a diver, or wearing an aviator watch when you're not an aviator is fucking cringy as fuck. Cut it out and get some taste you horological fuckboys.

I can confirm three:
>Georgy Grechko, 70's Amphibia on at least one of several mission he flew (prob. Soyuz 17 in 1974 to Salyut 4)
Looks like he died just two days ago, what a bad coincidence.
>Yuri Romanenko, 1st gen Amphibia on Soyuz 38, Soviet-Cuban Intercosmos mission to Salyut 6, 1980
>Someone brought a Komandirskie to the ISS on Soyuz TMA-4 in 2004, probably Gennady Padalka
>>
>>59826878
Didn't remember the 70's one, but as I said about 2, yeah.

I ordered an Oris Frankenwatch from Pajeetland on eBay, has the 17 Jewel ST-96 manual wind movement. How fucked am I? I bought it with the mindset of either getting a half decent watch to beat on, or something to work and learn on.
>>
>Used 1963

Can't afford $200?

It took a year, a complete service one or two cannibalized HMT-s, a dial resoldering, and finally a brand new Citizen balance Assembly to get my HMT Jawan working with acceptable accuracy. If it was any less good looking with the Omega knockoff dial and dauphine hands it has I would have long thrown it out. Never again poo2loo.
>>
>>59827126
Why do you want a used one, they have no history and cost practically nothing?
>>
>>59827320
I've only seen them new for $300

Fuggg. Guess the Oris will serve as a learning tool.

On another note, I'm highly interested in vintage Oris, but 98% seem to be frankenwatches. Anyone have any experience or recommendations with vintage Oris? Where to buy? Or should I just fuck off and buy a Vostok or something.
>>
>>59827449
>the Oris
that watch has nothing to do with oris, don't call it that.
